What Surah Al-Anfal is about
Al-Anfal, The Spoils of War, is the eighth surah of the Quran, with 75 verses. It was revealed in Medina and is widely understood to have come down after the Battle of Badr, the first major battle between the Muslims and the Quraysh of Mecca. It takes its name from verse 1, where the believers ask about the spoils and are told these belong to Allah and the Messenger, and that they should settle their differences first.
Before any rules about the spoils, verses 2-4 describe true believers: their hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned, their faith grows when they hear His verses, they rely on Him, pray and give. The surah then looks back at the battle. Some believers had been reluctant to go out (verses 5-6), they had hoped to meet the unarmed caravan rather than the army (verse 7), and Allah sent reinforcement, calm sleep and rain (verses 9-11). Verse 17 reminds them that the victory was Allah's doing, not theirs.
The middle section calls the believers to respond to Allah and His Messenger, warns against betraying trusts, and recalls the plot in Mecca to imprison, kill or expel the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (verse 30). Verse 41 sets out how a fifth of the spoils is to be distributed, and verses 42-44 describe how each army appeared fewer to the other. Verse 53 states that Allah does not change a blessing He has given a people until they change what is in themselves.
The final part covers treaties, preparation and peace. Verse 61 tells the Prophet ﷺ to incline to peace if the other side inclines to it, and verse 63 says Allah united the believers' hearts in a way no amount of wealth could. The surah ends by describing the bond between the emigrants from Mecca and the helpers of Medina (verses 72-75).
Main themes
Who the true believers are
Before answering the question about spoils, the surah describes believers by the state of their hearts and their actions. It shifts attention from what was gained to who they should be.
Verses 2–4Victory comes from Allah
The surah recalls the reinforcement of angels, the calm sleep and the rain on the eve of battle. Verse 17 makes clear that the believers' success was Allah's work, which guards against pride.
Verses 9–19Responding to the call
Believers are asked to obey without turning away, not to be like those who say they hear but do not, and to respond when called to what gives them life. Wealth and children are described as a test.
Verses 20–29Unity and steadfastness
When facing an enemy, believers are told to stand firm, remember Allah often and avoid quarrelling, which would weaken them. Verse 63 attributes their united hearts to Allah alone.
Verses 45–46Treaties and peace
The surah deals with those who break treaties, but also tells the Prophet ﷺ to accept peace when it is offered and trust in Allah. It closes by defining the loyalties between emigrants, helpers and later believers.
Verses 56–63
Verses to know
The believers are those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned, and when His revelations are recited to them, they strengthen them in faith, and upon their Lord they rely.
A short description of true faith: a heart moved by the mention of Allah, faith that grows on hearing His verses, and reliance on Him.
O you who believe! Respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to what will revive you. And know that Allah stands between a man and his heart, and that to Him you will be gathered.
It calls on believers to respond to Allah and the Messenger when called to what will bring them to life, and reminds them that Allah comes between a person and their heart.
That is because Allah would never change a blessing He has bestowed on a people unless they change what is within themselves, and because Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
This verse teaches that Allah does not take away a blessing from a people until they change what is within themselves, linking a community's condition to its inner state.
But if they incline towards peace, then incline towards it, and put your trust in Allah. He is the Hearer, the Knower.
Coming in a surah about war, it instructs the Prophet ﷺ to incline toward peace when the other side does, and to trust in Allah.

If you desire a verdict, the verdict has come to you. And if you desist, it would be best for you. And if you return, We will return; and your troops, however numerous, will not benefit you. Allah is with the believers.

Waith yamkuru bika allatheena kafaroo liyuthbitooka aw yaqtulooka aw yukhrijooka wayamkuroona wayamkuru Allahu waAllahu khayru almakireena
When the disbelievers plotted against you, to imprison you, or kill you, or expel you. They planned, and Allah planned, but Allah is the Best of planners.
- 31

Waitha tutla AAalayhim ayatuna qaloo qad samiAAna law nashao laqulna mithla hatha in hatha illa asateeru alawwaleena
And when Our revelations are recited to them, they say, “We have heard. Had we wanted, we could have said the like of this; these are nothing but myths of the ancients.”
- 32
Waith qaloo allahumma in kana hatha huwa alhaqqa min AAindika faamtir AAalayna hijaratan mina alssamai awi itina biAAathabin aleemin
And they said, “Our God, if this is the truth from You, then rain down on us stones from the sky, or visit us with a painful affliction.”
- 33
Wama kana Allahu liyuAAaththibahum waanta feehim wama kana Allahu muAAaththibahum wahum yastaghfiroona
But Allah would not punish them while you are amongst them. And Allah would not punish them as long as they seek forgiveness.
- 34
Wama lahum alla yuAAaththibahumu Allahu wahum yasuddoona AAani almasjidi alharami wama kanoo awliyaahu in awliyaohu illa almuttaqoona walakinna aktharahum la yaAAlamoona
Yet why should Allah not punish them, when they are turning others away from the Sacred Mosque, although they are not its custodians? Its rightful custodians are the pious; but most of them do not know.
- 35

Those who disbelieve spend their wealth to repel from Allah’s path. They will spend it, then it will become a source of sorrow for them, and then they will be defeated. Those who disbelieve will be herded into Hell.

Fight them until there is no more persecution, and religion becomes exclusively for Allah. But if they desist—Allah is Seeing of what they do.

And know that whatever spoils you gain, to Allah belongs its fifth, and to the Messenger, and the relatives, and the orphans, and the poor, and to the wayfarer, provided you believe in Allah and in what We revealed to Our servant on the Day of Distinction, the day when the two armies met. Allah is Capable of everything.

Recall when you were on the nearer bank, and they were on the further bank, and the caravan was below you. Had you planned for this meeting, you would have disagreed on the timing, but Allah was to carry out a predetermined matter, so that those who perish would perish by clear evidence, and those who survive would survive by clear evidence. Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

Satan made their deeds appear good to them, and said, “You cannot be defeated by any people today, and I am at your side.” But when the two armies came in sight of one another, he turned on his heels, and said, “I am innocent of you; I see what you do not see; I fear Allah; Allah is severe in punishment.”

Such was the case with the people of Pharaoh, and those before them. They denied the signs of their Lord, so We annihilated them for their wrongs, and We drowned the people of Pharaoh—they were all evildoers.

Inna allatheena amanoo wahajaroo wajahadoo biamwalihim waanfusihim fee sabeeli Allahi waallatheena awaw wanasaroo olaika baAAduhum awliyao baAAdin waallatheena amanoo walam yuhajiroo ma lakum min walayatihim min shayin hatta yuhajiroo waini istansarookum fee alddeeni faAAalaykumu alnnasru illa AAala qawmin baynakum wabaynahum meethaqun waAllahu bima taAAmaloona baseerun
Those who believed, and emigrated, and struggled in Allah’s cause with their possessions and their persons, and those who provided shelter and support—these are allies of one another. As for those who believed, but did not emigrate, you owe them no protection, until they have emigrated. But if they ask you for help in religion, you must come to their aid, except against a people with whom you have a treaty. Allah is Seeing of what you do.

Waallatheena kafaroo baAAduhum awliyao baAAdin illa tafAAaloohu takun fitnatun fee alardi wafasadun kabeerun
As for those who disbelieve, they are allies of one another. Unless you do this, there will be turmoil in the land, and much corruption.

Waallatheena amanoo wahajaroo wajahadoo fee sabeeli Allahi waallatheena awaw wanasaroo olaika humu almuminoona haqqan lahum maghfiratun warizqun kareemun
Those who believed, and emigrated, and struggled for Allah’s cause, and those who gave shelter and support—these are the true believers. They will have forgiveness, and a bountiful provision.

Waallatheena amanoo min baAAdu wahajaroo wajahadoo maAAakum faolaika minkum waoloo alarhami baAAduhum awla bibaAAdin fee kitabi Allahi inna Allaha bikulli shayin AAaleemun
As for those who believed afterwards, and emigrated and struggled with you—these belong with you. But family members are nearer to one another in the Book of Allah. Allah is Cognizant of everything.
