What Surah Al-Fath is about

Surah Al-Fath is the 48th surah of the Quran, a Medinan surah of 29 verses. Its name, "The Victory", comes from its first verse, in which Allah says He has granted the Prophet ﷺ a clear victory. According to reports in Sahih al-Bukhari and other collections, it was revealed as the Muslims returned from Hudaybiyyah in 6 AH (628 CE), after a treaty with the Quraysh that stopped them from performing the pilgrimage that year. Many companions felt the treaty was a setback, and the surah reframes it as an opening.

The first verses promise forgiveness, completed favor and guidance for the Prophet ﷺ (48:1-3), and describe Allah sending tranquility into the hearts of the believers so that their faith increases (48:4). Verse 10 says that those who pledge allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ are pledging it to Allah. Verses 11-17 address the desert Arabs who stayed behind with excuses, and exempt the blind, the lame and the sick from blame.

Verse 18 records that Allah was pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance under the tree, known as the Pledge of Ridwan, and that He knew what was in their hearts. Verses 24-26 explain why fighting at Mecca was held back, including the presence of believing men and women there whom the Muslims did not know, and contrast the pride and zeal of the days of ignorance with the calm Allah gave the believers.

Verse 27 confirms that the Prophet ﷺ's dream of entering the Sacred Mosque in safety, with heads shaved or hair cut short, would come true, which it did in the following year. The surah closes with verse 29, a description of Muhammad ﷺ and those with him: firm against disbelievers, compassionate among themselves, bowing and prostrating, with marks of prostration on their faces, likened in earlier scriptures to a seed that sprouts and grows strong on its stem.

Main themes

  1. A clear victory

The surah opens by calling a peace treaty a clear victory, along with forgiveness, completed favor and help for the Prophet ﷺ. It teaches that what looks like a setback can be the beginning of a larger opening.

    Verses 1–7
  2. Tranquility in the hearts

Three times the surah mentions Allah sending down sakinah, calm and serenity, on the believers (48:4, 48:18, 48:26). This calm allowed them to accept terms that felt hard at the time.

    Verses 4–5
  3. Those who stayed behind

Some desert Arabs had excused themselves from the trip to Mecca, claiming their families and property kept them busy. The surah exposes what was in their hearts and offers them another chance, while removing blame from the blind, the lame and the sick.

    Verses 11–17
  4. The pledge under the tree

Allah declares His pleasure with the believers who pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ under the tree at Hudaybiyyah. He knew their sincerity, sent tranquility upon them, and promised a near victory.

    Verses 18–21
  5. The vision fulfilled

The surah explains the wisdom in holding back fighting and assures the believers that the Prophet ﷺ's dream of entering the Sacred Mosque in security was true. It ends with a portrait of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions in prayer and in mutual mercy.

    Verses 24–29

Verses to know

It is He who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers, to add faith to their faith. To Allah belong the forces of the heavens and the earth. Allah is Knowing and Wise.
Al-Fath 48:4

Allah sends tranquility into believers' hearts so that faith grows upon faith, a phrase often cited to show that faith can increase.

Those who pledge allegiance to you are pledging allegiance to Allah. The hand of Allah is over their hands. Whoever breaks his pledge breaks it to his own loss. And whoever fulfills his covenant with Allah, He will grant him a great reward.
Al-Fath 48:10

Pledging allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ is described as pledging to Allah, with the hand of Allah over their hands.

Allah was pleased with the believers, when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree. He knew what was in their hearts, and sent down serenity upon them, and rewarded them with an imminent conquest.
Al-Fath 48:18

Allah states His pleasure with those who pledged under the tree, one of the clearest Quranic commendations of a specific group of companions.

Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Those with him are stern against the disbelievers, yet compassionate amongst themselves. You see them kneeling, prostrating, seeking blessings from Allah and approval. Their marks are on their faces from the effects of prostration. Such is their description in the Torah, and their description in the Gospel: like a plant that sprouts, becomes strong, grows thick, and rests on its stem, impressing the farmers. Through them He enrages the disbelievers. Allah has promised those among them who believe and do good deeds forgiveness and a great reward.
Al-Fath 48:29

The closing verse describes the Prophet ﷺ's companions as firm with opponents, merciful with one another, and marked by prostration, likened to a crop that grows strong.

When Surah Al-Fath is recited

There is no special time for reciting Surah Al-Fath, but it held a special place for the Prophet ﷺ. Sahih al-Bukhari reports from Umar that when it was revealed the Prophet ﷺ said a surah had come down to him that night which was dearer to him than everything the sun rises over. Sahih al-Bukhari also reports that he recited it on the day Mecca was opened, while riding.

  11. 11

The Desert-Arabs who remained behind will say to you, “Our belongings and our families have preoccupied us, so ask forgiveness for us.” They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts. Say, “Who can avail you anything against Allah, if He desires loss for you, or desires gain for you?” In fact, Allah is Informed of what you do.

  12. 12

Waman lam yumin biAllahi warasoolihi fainna aAAtadna lilkafireena saAAeeran

He who does not believe in Allah and His Messenger—We have prepared for the disbelievers a Blazing Fire.

  14. 14

To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He forgives whomever He wills, and He punishes whomever He wills. Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

  15. 15

Those who lagged behind will say when you depart to collect the gains, “Let us follow you.” They want to change the Word of Allah. Say, “You will not follow us; Allah has said so before.” Then they will say, “But you are jealous of us.” In fact, they understand only a little.

  16. 16

Say to the Desert-Arabs who lagged behind, “You will be called against a people of great might; you will fight them, unless they submit. If you obey, Allah will give you a fine reward. But if you turn away, as you turned away before, He will punish you with a painful punishment.”

  17. 17

There is no blame on the blind, nor any blame on the lame, nor any blame on the sick. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger—He will admit him into gardens beneath which rivers flow; but whoever turns away—He will punish him with a painful punishment.

  18. 18

Allah was pleased with the believers, when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree. He knew what was in their hearts, and sent down serenity upon them, and rewarded them with an imminent conquest.

  19. 19

Wamaghanima katheeratan yakhuthoonaha wakana Allahu AAazeezan hakeeman

And abundant gains for them to capture. Allah is Mighty and Wise.

  20. 20

WaAAadakumu Allahu maghanima katheeratan takhuthoonaha faAAajjala lakum hathihi wakaffa aydiya alnnasi AAankum walitakoona ayatan lilmumineena wayahdiyakum siratan mustaqeeman

Allah has promised you abundant gains, which you will capture. He has expedited this for you, and has restrained people’s hands from you; that it may be a sign to the believers, and that He may guide you on a straight path.

  21. 21

Waokhra lam taqdiroo AAalayha qad ahata Allahu biha wakana Allahu AAala kulli shayin qadeeran

And other things, of which you were incapable, but Allah has encompassed them. Allah is Capable of everything.

  22. 22

Walaw qatalakumu allatheena kafaroo lawallawoo aladbara thumma la yajidoona waliyyan wala naseeran

If those who disbelieve had fought you, they would have turned back and fled, then found neither protector nor helper.

  23. 23

Sunnata Allahi allatee qad khalat min qablu walan tajida lisunnati Allahi tabdeelan

It is Allah’s pattern, ongoing since the past. You will never find any change in Allah’s pattern.

  24. 24

Wahuwa allathee kaffa aydiyahum AAankum waaydiyakum AAanhum bibatni makkata min baAAdi an athfarakum AAalayhim wakana Allahu bima taAAmaloona baseeran

It is He who withheld their hands from you, and your hands from them, in the valley of Mecca, after giving you advantage over them. Allah is Observer of what you do.

  25. 25

It is they who disbelieved, and barred you from the Sacred Mosque, and prevented the offering from reaching its destination. Were it not for faithful men and faithful women, whom you did not know, you were about to hurt them, and became guilty of an unintentional crime. Thus Allah admits into His mercy whomever He wills. Had they dispersed, We would have punished those who disbelieved among them with a painful penalty.

  26. 26

Ith jaAAala allatheena kafaroo fee quloobihimu alhamiyyata hamiyyata aljahiliyyati faanzala Allahu sakeenatahu AAala rasoolihi waAAala almumineena waalzamahum kalimata alttaqwa wakanoo ahaqqa biha waahlaha wakana Allahu bikulli shayin AAaleeman

Those who disbelieved filled their hearts with rage—the rage of the days of ignorance. But Allah sent His serenity down upon His Messenger, and upon the believers, and imposed on them the words of righteousness—of which they were most worthy and deserving. Allah is aware of everything.

  27. 27

Laqad sadaqa Allahu rasoolahu alrruya bialhaqqi latadkhulunna almasjida alharama in shaa Allahu amineena muhalliqeena ruoosakum wamuqassireena la takhafoona faAAalima ma lam taAAlamoo fajaAAala min dooni thalika fathan qareeban

Allah has fulfilled His Messenger’s vision in truth: “You will enter the Sacred Mosque, Allah willing, in security, heads shaven, or hair cut short, not fearing.” He knew what you did not know, and has granted besides that an imminent victory.

  28. 28

Huwa allathee arsala rasoolahu bialhuda wadeeni alhaqqi liyuthhirahu AAala alddeeni kullihi wakafa biAllahi shaheedan

It is He who sent His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, to make it prevail over all religions. Allah suffices as Witness.

  29. 29

Muhammadun rasoolu Allahi waallatheena maAAahu ashiddao AAala alkuffari ruhamao baynahum tarahum rukkaAAan sujjadan yabtaghoona fadlan mina Allahi waridwanan seemahum fee wujoohihim min athari alssujoodi thalika mathaluhum fee alttawrati wamathaluhum fee alinjeeli kazarAAin akhraja shatahu faazarahu faistaghlatha faistawa AAala sooqihi yuAAjibu alzzurraAAa liyagheetha bihimu alkuffara waAAada Allahu allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati minhum maghfiratan waajran AAatheeman
