What Surah Al-Furqan is about

Al-Furqan, The Criterion, is the 25th surah of the Quran. It was revealed in Mecca and takes its name from its first verse, which praises Allah for sending down the Criterion, the revelation that separates truth from falsehood, so that His servant can warn the world. The surah begins in juz 18 and continues into juz 19 from verse 21.

Much of the first half records what the Meccans said about the Prophet ﷺ and answers it. They claimed the Quran was invented with outside help or copied from old stories (4 to 5). They asked what kind of messenger eats food and walks through the markets, and why no angel or treasure came with him (7 to 8). Verse 20 answers that every earlier messenger did the same. Others asked why the Quran was not revealed all at once, and verse 32 explains that it came in stages to strengthen the Prophet's heart. Between these answers are scenes of the Day of Judgment, including the wrongdoer who bites his hands and wishes he had never taken a certain person as a close friend (27 to 29), and the Messenger's complaint that his people abandoned the Quran (30).

The second half turns to the natural world as evidence: the lengthening and shrinking of shade (45 to 46), night as a covering and sleep as rest (47), winds and rain that bring dead land to life (48 to 49), and two bodies of water, one fresh and one salty, kept apart by a barrier (53). Verse 60 records the Meccans' refusal to bow to the Merciful.

In reply, the surah closes with its best-known passage. Verses 63 to 76 describe the servants of the Most Merciful: they walk humbly and answer the ignorant with peace, spend the night in prayer, are neither wasteful nor stingy, avoid false witness, and ask Allah for spouses and children who bring them joy. Verse 70 says that those who repent and do good will have their bad deeds replaced with good ones. The surah ends with a reminder that people matter to Allah because they call on Him (77).

Main themes

  1. The Criterion and the One who sent it

The surah opens by praising Allah, who sent down the Criterion, owns the heavens and earth, and has no son or partner. It contrasts Him with the idols, which cannot create anything and have no power over life, death or resurrection.

    Verses 1–3
  2. Objections to the Messenger

The Meccans called the Quran a forgery and old tales, and mocked the idea of a messenger who eats and goes to the market. The surah answers that every messenger before him was the same, and that people are tested by one another.

    Verses 4–20
  3. Regret on the Day of Judgment

On the Day the sky splits with clouds and angels descend, the wrongdoer bites his hands, wishing he had followed the Messenger and not been led astray by a friend. The Messenger tells his Lord that his people treated the Quran as something to be abandoned.

    Verses 21–34
  4. Signs in shade, wind and water

The surah points to the sun and the moving shadow, the night and sleep, winds that bring rain to dead land, and the barrier between fresh and salt water. These are offered as reasons to reflect and to be grateful.

    Verses 45–62
  5. The servants of the Most Merciful

The closing passage describes people who walk humbly, respond to rudeness with peace, pray at night, spend in moderation, avoid the major sins, do not bear false witness, and pray for their families. It promises that sincere repentance can turn past wrongs into good deeds.

    Verses 63–77

Verses to know

And the Messenger will say, “My Lord, my people have abandoned this Quran.”
Al-Furqan 25:30

The Messenger complains to his Lord that his people abandoned the Quran. Muslims often cite this verse as a gentle warning to keep the Quran part of their lives.

The servants of the Merciful are those who walk the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say, “Peace.”
Al-Furqan 25:63

This verse opens the portrait of the servants of the Merciful, defined first by humility in how they walk and by answering ignorant people with peace.

Except for those who repent, and believe, and do good deeds. These—Allah will replace their bad deeds with good deeds. Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
Al-Furqan 25:70

It promises that those who repent, believe and do good will have their bad deeds replaced with good deeds, one of the most hopeful verses on repentance in the Quran.

And those who say, “Our Lord, grant us delight in our spouses and our children, and make us a good example for the righteous.”
Al-Furqan 25:74

This is a widely used prayer asking Allah for spouses and children who are a joy to the eyes, and to be made an example for the righteous.

When Surah Al-Furqan is recited

Verse 60 is one of the verses of prostration in the Quran, and many Muslims prostrate when they recite or hear it. The prayer in verse 74 for spouses and children who bring joy is commonly memorized and used in personal supplication, especially around marriage and family life.

Those who do not expect to meet Us say, “If only the angels were sent down to us, or we could see our Lord.” They have grown arrogant within themselves, and have become excessively defiant.

WaAAadan wathamooda waashaba alrrassi waquroonan bayna thalika katheeran

And Aad, and Thamood, and the inhabitants of Arras, and many generations in between.

  39. 39

Wakullan darabna lahu alamthala wakullan tabbarna tatbeeran

To each We presented the parables; and each We devastated utterly.

  40. 40

Walaqad ataw AAala alqaryati allatee omtirat matara alssawi afalam yakoonoo yarawnaha bal kanoo la yarjoona nushooran

And they came upon the city that was drenched by the terrible rain. Did they not see it? But they do not expect resurrection.

  41. 41

Waitha raawka in yattakhithoonaka illa huzuwan ahatha allathee baAAatha Allahu rasoolan

And when they see you, they take you for nothing but mockery: “Is this the one Allah sent as a messenger?”

  42. 42

In kada layudilluna AAan alihatina lawla an sabarna AAalayha wasawfa yaAAlamoona heena yarawna alAAathaba man adallu sabeelan

“He nearly led us away from our gods, had we not patiently adhered to them.” But they will know, when they witness the torment, who is further away from the way.

  43. 43

Araayta mani ittakhatha ilahahu hawahu afaanta takoonu AAalayhi wakeelan

Have you seen him who chose his desire as his god? Would you be an agent for him?

  44. 44

Am tahsabu anna aktharahum yasmaAAoona aw yaAAqiloona in hum illa kaalanAAami bal hum adallu sabeelan

Or do you assume that most of them hear or understand? They are just like cattle, but even more errant in their way.

  45. 45

Alam tara ila rabbika kayfa madda alththilla walaw shaa lajaAAalahu sakinan thumma jaAAalna alshshamsa AAalayhi daleelan

Do you not see how your Lord extends the shadow? Had He willed, He could have made it still. And We made the sun a pointer to it.

  46. 46

    Thumma qabadnahu ilayna qabdan yaseeran

Then We withdraw it towards Us gradually.

  47. 47

Wahuwa allathee jaAAala lakumu allayla libasan waalnnawma subatan wajaAAala alnnahara nushooran

And it is He who made the night a covering for you, and sleep for rest; and He made the day a revival.

  48. 48

Wahuwa allathee arsala alrriyaha bushran bayna yaday rahmatihi waanzalna mina alssamai maan tahooran

And it is He who sends the winds, bringing advance news of His mercy; and We send down from the sky pure water.

  49. 49

Linuhyiya bihi baldatan maytan wanusqiyahu mimma khalaqna anAAaman waanasiyya katheeran

To revive dead lands thereby, and to provide drink for the multitude of animals and humans We created.

  50. 50

Walaqad sarrafnahu baynahum liyaththakkaroo faaba aktharu alnnasi illa kufooran

We have circulated it among them, that they may reflect, but most people persist in thanklessness.

  51. 51

Walaw shina labaAAathna fee kulli qaryatin natheeran

Had We willed, We could have sent to every town a warner.

  52. 52

Fala tutiAAi alkafireena wajahidhum bihi jihadan kabeeran

So do not obey the disbelievers, but strive against them with it, a mighty struggle.

  53. 53

Wahuwa allathee maraja albahrayni hatha AAathbun furatun wahatha milhun ojajun wajaAAala baynahuma barzakhan wahijran mahjooran

And it is He who merged the two seas; this one fresh and sweet, and that one salty and bitter; and He placed between them a barrier, and an impassable boundary.

  54. 54

Wahuwa allathee khalaqa mina almai basharan fajaAAalahu nasaban wasihran wakana rabbuka qadeeran

And it is He who, from fluid, created the human being. Then He made relationships through marriage and mating. Your Lord is Omnipotent.

  55. 55

WayaAAbudoona min dooni Allahi ma la yanfaAAuhum wala yadurruhum wakana alkafiru AAala rabbihi thaheeran

And yet, instead of Allah, they serve what neither profits them nor harms them. The disbeliever has always turned his back on his Lord.

  56. 56

    Wama arsalnaka illa mubashshiran wanatheeran

We sent you only as a herald of good news and a warner.

  57. 57

Qul ma asalukum AAalayhi min ajrin illa man shaa an yattakhitha ila rabbihi sabeelan

Say, “I ask of you no payment for this—only that whoever wills may take a path to his Lord.”

  58. 58

Watawakkal AAala alhayyi allathee la yamootu wasabbih bihamdihi wakafa bihi bithunoobi AAibadihi khabeeran

And put your trust in the Living, the One who never dies; and celebrate His praise. He suffices as the All-Informed Knower of the faults of His creatures.

  59. 59

Allathee khalaqa alssamawati waalarda wama baynahuma fee sittati ayyamin thumma istawa AAala alAAarshi alrrahmanu faisal bihi khabeeran

He who created the heavens and the earth and everything between them in six days, then settled on the Throne. The Most Merciful. Ask about Him a well-informed.

  60. 60

Waitha qeela lahumu osjudoo lilrrahmani qaloo wama alrrahmanu anasjudu lima tamuruna wazadahum nufooran

And when it is said to them, “Bow down to the Merciful,” they say, “And what is the Merciful? Are we to bow down to whatever you command us?” And it increases their aversion.

  61. 61

Tabaraka allathee jaAAala fee alssamai buroojan wajaAAala feeha sirajan waqamaran muneeran

Blessed is He who placed constellations in the sky, and placed in it a lamp, and an illuminating moon.

  62. 62

Wahuwa allathee jaAAala allayla waalnnahara khilfatan liman arada an yaththakkara aw arada shukooran

And it is He who made the night and the day alternate—for whoever desires to reflect, or desires to show gratitude.

  63. 63

WaAAibadu alrrahmani allatheena yamshoona AAala alardi hawnan waitha khatabahumu aljahiloona qaloo salaman

The servants of the Merciful are those who walk the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say, “Peace.”

  64. 64

    Waallatheena yabeetoona lirabbihim sujjadan waqiyaman

And those who pass the night prostrating themselves to their Lord and standing up.

  65. 65

Waallatheena yaqooloona rabbana isrif AAanna AAathaba jahannama inna AAathabaha kana gharaman

And those who say, “Our Lord, avert from us the suffering of Hell, for its suffering is continuous.

  66. 66

    Innaha saat mustaqarran wamuqaman

It is indeed a miserable residence and destination.”

  67. 67

Waallatheena itha anfaqoo lam yusrifoo walam yaqturoo wakana bayna thalika qawaman

And those who, when they spend, are neither wasteful nor stingy, but choose a middle course between that.

  68. 68

Waallatheena la yadAAoona maAAa Allahi ilahan akhara wala yaqtuloona alnnafsa allatee harrama Allahu illa bialhaqqi wala yaznoona waman yafAAal thalika yalqa athaman

And those who do not implore besides Allah any other god, and do not kill the soul which Allah has made sacred—except in the pursuit of justice—and do not commit adultery. Whoever does that will face penalties.

  69. 69

YudaAAaf lahu alAAathabu yawma alqiyamati wayakhlud feehi muhanan

The punishment will be doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will dwell therein in humiliation forever.

  70. 70

Illa man taba waamana waAAamila AAamalan salihan faolaika yubaddilu Allahu sayyiatihim hasanatin wakana Allahu ghafooran raheeman

Except for those who repent, and believe, and do good deeds. These—Allah will replace their bad deeds with good deeds. Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.

  71. 71

Waman taba waAAamila salihan fainnahu yatoobu ila Allahi mataban

Whoever repents and acts righteously—has inclined towards Allah with repentance.

  72. 72

Waallatheena la yashhadoona alzzoora waitha marroo biallaghwi marroo kiraman

And those who do not bear false witness; and when they come across indecencies, they pass by with dignity.

  73. 73

Waallatheena itha thukkiroo biayati rabbihim lam yakhirroo AAalayha summan waAAumyanan

And those who, when reminded of the revelations of their Lord, do not fall before them deaf and blind.

  74. 74

Waallatheena yaqooloona rabbana hab lana min azwajina wathurriyyatina qurrata aAAyunin waijAAalna lilmuttaqeena imaman

And those who say, “Our Lord, grant us delight in our spouses and our children, and make us a good example for the righteous.”

  75. 75

Olaika yujzawna alghurfata bima sabaroo wayulaqqawna feeha tahiyyatan wasalaman

Those will be awarded the Chamber for their patience, and will be greeted therein with greetings and peace.

  76. 76

    Khalideena feeha hasunat mustaqarran wamuqaman

Abiding therein forever—it is an excellent residence and destination.

  77. 77

Qul ma yaAAbao bikum rabbee lawla duAAaokum faqad kaththabtum fasawfa yakoonu lizaman

Say, “What are you to my Lord without your prayers? You have denied the truth, and the inevitable will happen.”
