What Surah Al-Jathiyah is about

Surah Al-Jathiyah is the 45th surah of the Quran, a Meccan surah of 37 verses. Its name, often translated "The Crouching" or "The Kneeling", comes from verse 28, where every community is seen on its knees on the Day of Judgment, each called to its own book. It is the sixth of the seven surahs that begin with Ha Meem.

The opening (45:3-6) lists signs for believers: the heavens and earth, human creation, the animals scattered across the land, the alternation of night and day, rain that revives the earth, and the turning of the winds. Verses 7-11 describe the person who hears Allah's verses and walks away proudly as if he had not heard them. Verses 12-13 remind people that the sea and everything in the heavens and earth have been made of service to them.

Verse 14 asks believers to forgive those who do not hope for the days of Allah, leaving the final reckoning to Him. Verses 16-20 recall the Book and prophethood given to the Children of Israel and their later disputes, and tell the Prophet ﷺ to follow the clear way he has been given. Verse 23 describes the person who has taken his own desire as his god, and verse 24 records those who said that only time destroys them.

The closing scene (45:27-35) shows every nation kneeling, each called to a record that speaks the truth about what it did. The believers enter Allah's mercy, while those who mocked are told that they will be forgotten as they forgot this Day. The surah ends with praise of the Lord of the heavens, the earth and all the worlds, to whom all greatness belongs (45:36-37).

Main themes

  1. Signs for those who reflect

The surah lists signs in the heavens, the earth, human beings, animals, night and day, rain and wind, addressing them in turn to believers, to people of certainty, and to people who use reason.

    Verses 3–6
  2. Hearing without listening

Verses 7-11 describe someone who hears the revelation recited and carries on in arrogance, or mocks what he learns of it. The surah warns that what he gathered in this life will not help him.

    Verses 7–11
  3. All of it made of service

Ships sail by Allah's command so that people can seek His bounty, and everything in the heavens and earth has been placed at human service. Believers are then asked to overlook the hostility of those who do not expect Allah's days.

    Verses 12–15
  4. Desire as a god

Verse 23 describes someone whose own desire has become the thing he obeys, and verse 24 those who see only this life and blame time for death. The surah answers that they speak without knowledge, and that Allah gives life and death and will gather everyone.

    Verses 21–26
  5. Every nation on its knees

On the Day of the Hour every community kneels and is called to its record, which was written as they lived. Believers are admitted into mercy, and those who treated the revelation as a joke are told they are forgotten as they forgot this Day.

    Verses 27–37

Verses to know

And He placed at your service whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth—all is from Him. In that are signs for a people who think.
Al-Jathiyah 45:13

Everything in the heavens and earth has been made of service to people, all of it from Allah, and the verse ends with an invitation to think.

Have you considered him who has taken his desire for his god? Allah has knowingly led him astray, and has sealed his hearing and his heart, and has placed a veil over his vision. Who will guide him after Allah? Will you not reflect?
Al-Jathiyah 45:23

One of the Quran's sharpest descriptions of being ruled by one's own wants: taking desire as one's god.

28You will see every community on its knees; every community will be called to its Book: “Today you are being repaid for what you used to do. 29This Book of Ours speaks about you in truth. We have been transcribing what you have been doing.”
Al-Jathiyah 45:28–29

The picture that gives the surah its name: every community kneeling, each called to its book, which speaks the truth about what it did.

Tilka ayatu Allahi natlooha AAalayka bialhaqqi fabiayyi hadeethin baAAda Allahi waayatihi yuminoona

These are Allah’s Verses which We recite to you in truth. In which message, after Allah and His revelations, will they believe?

YasmaAAu ayati Allahi tutla AAalayhi thumma yusirru mustakbiran kaan lam yasmaAAha fabashshirhu biAAathabin aleemin

Who hears Allah’s revelations being recited to him, yet he persists arrogantly, as though he did not hear them. Announce to him a painful punishment.

  9. 9

Waitha AAalima min ayatina shayan ittakhathaha huzuwan olaika lahum AAathabun muheenun

And when he learns something of Our revelations, he takes them in mockery. For such there is a shameful punishment.

  10. 10

Min waraihim jahannamu wala yughnee AAanhum ma kasaboo shayan wala ma ittakhathoo min dooni Allahi awliyaa walahum AAathabun AAatheemun

Beyond them lies Hell. What they have earned will not benefit them at all, nor will those they adopted as lords instead of Allah. They will have a terrible punishment.

  11. 11

Hatha hudan waallatheena kafaroo biayati rabbihim lahum AAathabun min rijzin aleemin

This is guidance. Those who blaspheme their Lord’s revelations will have a punishment of agonizing pain.

  12. 12

Allahu allathee sakhkhara lakumu albahra litajriya alfulku feehi biamrihi walitabtaghoo min fadlihi walaAAallakum tashkuroona

It is Allah who placed the sea at your service, so that ships may run through it by His command, and that you may seek of His bounty, and that you may give thanks.

  13. 13

Wasakhkhara lakum ma fee alssamawati wama fee alardi jameeAAan minhu inna fee thalika laayatin liqawmin yatafakkaroona

And He placed at your service whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth—all is from Him. In that are signs for a people who think.

  14. 14

Qul lillatheena amanoo yaghfiroo lillatheena la yarjoona ayyama Allahi liyajziya qawman bima kanoo yaksiboona

Tell those who believe to forgive those who do not hope for the Days of Allah. He will fully recompense people for whatever they have earned.

  15. 15

Man AAamila salihan falinafsihi waman asaa faAAalayha thumma ila rabbikum turjaAAoona

Whoever does a good deed, it is for his soul; and whoever commits evil, it is against it; then to your Lord you will be returned.

  16. 16

Walaqad atayna banee israeela alkitaba waalhukma waalnnubuwwata warazaqnahum mina alttayyibati wafaddalnahum AAala alAAalameena

We gave the Children of Israel the Book, and wisdom, and prophecy; and We provided them with the good things; and We gave them advantage over all other people.

  17. 17

Waataynahum bayyinatin mina alamri fama ikhtalafoo illa min baAAdi ma jaahumu alAAilmu baghyan baynahum inna rabbaka yaqdee baynahum yawma alqiyamati feema kanoo feehi yakhtalifoona

And We gave them precise rulings. They fell into dispute only after knowledge came to them, out of mutual rivalry. Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection regarding the things they differed about.

  18. 18

Thumma jaAAalnaka AAala shareeAAatin mina alamri faittabiAAha wala tattabiAA ahwaa allatheena la yaAAlamoona

Then We set you upon a pathway of faith, so follow it, and do not follow the inclinations of those who do not know.

  19. 19

Innahum lan yughnoo AAanka mina Allahi shayan wainna alththalimeena baAAduhum awliyao baAAdin waAllahu waliyyu almuttaqeena

They will not help you against Allah in any way. The wrongdoers are allies of one another, while Allah is the Protector of the righteous.

  20. 20

Hatha basairu lilnnasi wahudan warahmatun liqawmin yooqinoona

This is an illumination for mankind, and guidance, and mercy for people who believe with certainty.

  21. 21

Am hasiba allatheena ijtarahoo alssayyiati an najAAalahum kaallatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati sawaan mahyahum wamamatuhum saa ma yahkumoona

Do those who perpetrate the evil deeds assume that We will regard them as equal to those who believe and do righteous deeds, whether in their life or their death? Evil is their judgment!

  22. 22

Wakhalaqa Allahu alssamawati waalarda bialhaqqi walitujza kullu nafsin bima kasabat wahum la yuthlamoona

Allah created the heavens and the earth with justice, so that every soul will be repaid for what it has earned. And they will not be wronged.

  23. 23

Afaraayta mani ittakhatha ilahahu hawahu waadallahu Allahu AAala AAilmin wakhatama AAala samAAihi waqalbihi wajaAAala AAala basarihi ghishawatan faman yahdeehi min baAAdi Allahi afala tathakkaroona

Have you considered him who has taken his desire for his god? Allah has knowingly led him astray, and has sealed his hearing and his heart, and has placed a veil over his vision. Who will guide him after Allah? Will you not reflect?

  24. 24

Waqaloo ma hiya illa hayatuna alddunya namootu wanahya wama yuhlikuna illa alddahru wama lahum bithalika min AAilmin in hum illa yathunnoona

And they say, “There is nothing but this our present life; we die and we live, and nothing destroys us except time.” But they have no knowledge of that; they are only guessing.

  25. 25

Waitha tutla AAalayhim ayatuna bayyinatin ma kana hujjatahum illa an qaloo itoo biabaina in kuntum sadiqeena

When Our clarifying Verses are recited to them, their only argument is to say, “Bring back our ancestors, if you are truthful.”

  26. 26

Quli Allahu yuhyeekum thumma yumeetukum thumma yajmaAAukum ila yawmi alqiyamati la rayba feehi walakinna akthara alnnasi la yaAAlamoona

Say, “Allah gives you life, then He makes you die; then He gathers you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. But most people do not know.”

  27. 27

Walillahi mulku alssamawati waalardi wayawma taqoomu alssaAAatu yawmaithin yakhsaru almubtiloona

To Allah belongs the kingship of the heavens and the earth. On the Day when the Hour takes place, on that Day the falsifiers will lose.

  28. 28

Watara kulla ommatin jathiyatan kullu ommatin tudAAa ila kitabiha alyawma tujzawna ma kuntum taAAmaloona

You will see every community on its knees; every community will be called to its Book: “Today you are being repaid for what you used to do.

  29. 29

Hatha kitabuna yantiqu AAalaykum bialhaqqi inna kunna nastansikhu ma kuntum taAAmaloona

This Book of Ours speaks about you in truth. We have been transcribing what you have been doing.”

  30. 30

Faamma allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati fayudkhiluhum rabbuhum fee rahmatihi thalika huwa alfawzu almubeenu

As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them into His mercy. That is the clear triumph.

  31. 31

Waamma allatheena kafaroo afalam takun ayatee tutla AAalaykum faistakbartum wakuntum qawman mujrimeena

But as for those who disbelieved: “Were My revelations not recited to you? But you turned arrogant, and were guilty people.”

  32. 32

Waitha qeela inna waAAda Allahi haqqun waalssaAAatu la rayba feeha qultum ma nadree ma alssaAAatu in nathunnu illa thannan wama nahnu bimustayqineena

And when it was said, “The promise of Allah is true, and of the Hour there is no doubt,” you said, “We do not know what the Hour is; we think it is only speculation; we are not convinced.”

  33. 33

Wabada lahum sayyiatu ma AAamiloo wahaqa bihim ma kanoo bihi yastahzioona

The evils of what they did will become evident to them, and the very thing they ridiculed will haunt them.

  34. 34

Waqeela alyawma nansakum kama naseetum liqaa yawmikum hatha wamawakumu alnnaru wama lakum min nasireena

And it will be said, “Today We forget you, as you forgot the encounter of this Day of yours. Your abode is the Fire, and there are no saviors for you.

  35. 35

Thalikum biannakumu ittakhathtum ayati Allahi huzuwan wagharratkumu alhayatu alddunya faalyawma la yukhrajoona minha wala hum yustaAAtaboona

That is because you took Allah’s revelations for a joke, and the worldly life lured you.” So today they will not be brought out of it, and they will not be allowed to repent.

  36. 36

Falillahi alhamdu rabbi alssamawati warabbi alardi rabbi alAAalameena
