What Surah Al-Mulk is about
Al-Mulk is the 67th surah of the Quran and the first surah of the 29th juz. It was revealed in Mecca and has 30 verses. Its name means The Sovereignty or The Dominion, from its opening verse, which blesses the One in whose hand all sovereignty lies. It is also widely known as Tabarak, from the first word of that verse, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is reported to have called it by that name.
The surah begins with a statement of purpose in verse 2: Allah created death and life to test which of people is best in conduct. Verses 3 and 4 then invite the reader to look at the sky, look again, and look once more, and to find no flaw in the seven heavens. Verse 5 describes the nearest sky adorned with lamps.
Verses 6 to 11 move to the Fire. Each group thrown into it is asked by its keepers whether no warner came to them, and they admit that one did and they denied him. In verse 10 they say that if they had only listened or reasoned, they would not be there. Verse 12 offers the other path: forgiveness and a great reward for those who fear their Lord unseen. Verses 13 and 14 remind people that Allah knows what is in their hearts, since He created them.
The rest of the surah, verses 15 to 30, turns the reader's eyes to everyday life. The earth is made manageable to walk on and eat from. The birds overhead spread and fold their wings, held up only by the Most Merciful. Hearing, sight and hearts are gifts that people rarely thank Him for. A series of questions asks who could protect or feed people if Allah withheld His help. The surah closes in verse 30 with a simple question: if your water sank into the ground, who could bring you flowing water.
Al-Mulk is one of the most memorized surahs of the Quran. A narration in Sunan at-Tirmidhi describes a surah of thirty verses interceding for a man until he was forgiven, and many Muslims recite it every night before sleep.
Main themes
Life and death as a test
The surah opens by blessing the One who holds all sovereignty and then gives the reason for human life in verse 2: death and life were created to test who is best in deeds. The verse ends by naming Allah as the Almighty and the Forgiving, pairing seriousness with hope.
Verses 1–2Look at the sky again
Verses 3 to 5 ask the reader to examine the heavens repeatedly for any flaw and promise that the eye will come back tired without finding one. The nearest sky is described as decorated with lamps that also guard against devils.
Verses 3–5Regret of those who did not listen
Verses 6 to 11 describe the people of the Fire being asked whether a warner came to them. Their answer admits he did, and verse 10 records their regret that they did not listen or use their reason.
Verses 6–11Fearing Allah unseen
Verse 12 promises forgiveness and a great reward to those who fear their Lord in private, when no one else is watching. Verses 13 and 14 explain why: the One who created people knows what they hide and what they declare.
Verses 12–14Everyday signs of mercy
The second half points to the ground under people's feet, the birds above them, their hearing and sight, and the water they drink. Each is presented as a gift from the Most Merciful that people depend on without thinking, and the surah asks who else could provide it.
Verses 15–30
Verses to know
He who created death and life—to test you—as to which of you is better in conduct. He is the Almighty, the Forgiving.
One of the clearest statements in the Quran of why people are here: Allah created death and life to test who is best in conduct. It puts the quality of deeds, not their quantity, at the center.
3He who created seven heavens in layers. You see no discrepancy in the creation of the Compassionate. Look again. Can you see any cracks? 4Then look again, and again, and your sight will return to you dazzled and exhausted.
An invitation to look at the sky, then look again and again, and find no flaw. It is a direct call to reflect on creation with one's own eyes.
Have they not seen the birds above them, spreading their wings, and folding them? None holds them except the Compassionate. He is Perceiver of everything.
A gentle, familiar image: birds spreading and folding their wings, held up by none but the Most Merciful. It turns an ordinary sight into a reminder of Allah's care.
Say, “Have you considered? If your water drains away, who will bring you pure running water?”
The surah ends with a simple question about water. If the water people depend on sank away, no one but Allah could bring it back.
When Surah Al-Mulk is recited
Many Muslims recite Surah Al-Mulk every night before going to sleep. This follows a report in Sunan at-Tirmidhi from Jabir ibn Abdullah that the Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Mulk, which scholars such as al-Albani graded authentic. Sunan at-Tirmidhi, Sunan Abi Dawud and Sunan Ibn Majah also report from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet ﷺ said a surah of thirty verses interceded for a man until he was forgiven, and named it as Tabarak alladhi biyadihil mulk. At-Tirmidhi graded this narration hasan (good). A statement of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, recorded by an-Nasa'i and graded hasan by al-Albani, says that reciting it every night protects a person from the punishment of the grave. For these reasons it is one of the most commonly memorized surahs, often learned early and recited nightly.

Questions about Surah Al-Mulk
What are the benefits of reading Surah Mulk?
A narration in Sunan at-Tirmidhi, graded hasan, says a surah of thirty verses, Al-Mulk, interceded for a man until he was forgiven. A statement of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud recorded by an-Nasa'i, also graded hasan, says reciting it every night protects from the punishment of the grave.
When should I read Surah Mulk?
The common practice is to read it at night before sleeping. Sunan at-Tirmidhi reports that the Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Mulk.
How many verses are in Surah Mulk?
Surah Al-Mulk has 30 verses. It is a Meccan surah, the 67th in the Quran and the first surah of the 29th juz.
Why is Surah Mulk also called Tabarak?
Tabarak is the first word of the surah, meaning blessed is He. The Prophet ﷺ referred to it as Tabarak alladhi biyadihil mulk in the narration about its intercession, so both names are widely used.
