What Surah Al-Mumtahanah is about
Al-Mumtahanah is the 60th surah of the Quran, revealed in Medina, with 13 verses. Its name means the woman who is examined, from verse 10, which tells the believers to test the faith of women who came to Medina as emigrants.
The surah begins in verse 1 by warning believers against secretly showing affection to those who had driven the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his followers out of Mecca. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim report that it was revealed when Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah, a companion who had fought at Badr, sent a letter to Mecca warning its people of the Prophet's plans, hoping to protect his family there. The Prophet ﷺ accepted his explanation and did not punish him.
Verses 4 to 6 hold up Abraham (Ibrahim) and those with him as an excellent example, for the way they stood apart from their people's idols, and include their prayer of trust and repentance. Then the tone opens up. Verse 7 says Allah may yet bring affection between believers and those they now count as enemies. Verse 8 says Allah does not forbid kindness and fairness toward those who have not fought them over their religion or driven them from their homes, and verse 9 limits the prohibition to those who did.
Verses 10 and 11 deal with believing women who left Mecca for Medina, telling the believers to test their faith and not send them back. Verse 12 gives the terms of the pledge women made to the Prophet ﷺ: not to associate anything with Allah, not to steal, not to commit adultery, not to kill their children, not to make false claims, and not to disobey him in what is right. Verse 13 closes with a warning similar to the opening.
Main themes
Loyalty in a time of conflict
The opening verses warn believers against secretly siding with those who expelled them and want them to give up their faith. Verse 3 adds that relatives and children will be of no help on the Day of Resurrection.
Verses 1–3The example of Abraham
Abraham and his companions are called an excellent example for anyone who hopes in Allah and the Last Day. The passage includes their prayer placing their trust in Allah and asking not to be made a trial for those who disbelieve.
Verses 4–6Kindness toward those who are not hostile
Verse 7 holds out hope that enmity may turn into affection. Verses 8 and 9 make a clear distinction: kindness and fairness are allowed toward those who have not fought believers over religion, and only those who did are excluded.
Verses 7–9Women who emigrated and their pledge
Verses 10 and 11 tell the believers to examine women who came to Medina for their faith and not return them to the disbelievers. Verse 12 lays out the pledge of allegiance that believing women gave the Prophet ﷺ.
Verses 10–12
Verses to know
You have had an excellent example in Abraham and those with him; when they said to their people, “We are quit of you, and what you worship apart from Allah. We denounce you. Enmity and hatred has surfaced between us and you, forever, until you believe in Allah alone.” Except for the words of Abraham to his father, “I will ask forgiveness for you, though I have no power from Allah to do anything for you.” “Our Lord, in You we trust, and to You we repent, and to You is the ultimate resort.
This verse names Abraham as an excellent example and records the prayer he and his followers made, while noting the one exception of his promise to ask forgiveness for his father.
As for those who have not fought against you for your religion, nor expelled you from your homes, Allah does not prohibit you from dealing with them kindly and equitably. Allah loves the equitable.
One of the Quran's clearest statements that Muslims may be kind and fair to people of other faiths who have not fought them or driven them from their homes, and that Allah loves the fair-minded.
O Prophet! If believing women come to you, pledging allegiance to you, on condition that they will not associate anything with Allah, nor steal, nor commit adultery, nor kill their children, nor commit perjury as to parenthood, nor disobey you in anything righteous, accept their allegiance and ask Allah’s forgiveness for them. Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
This verse sets out the pledge believing women made to the Prophet ﷺ. Aisha is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari to have said that he examined the women who came to him by this verse.

O you who believe! Do not take My enemies and your enemies for supporters, offering them affection, when they have disbelieved in what has come to you of the truth. They have expelled the Messenger, and you, because you believed in Allah, your Lord. If you have mobilized to strive for My cause, seeking My approval, how can you secretly love them? I know what you conceal and what you reveal. Whoever among you does that has strayed from the right way.

O you who believe! When believing women come to you emigrating, test them. Allah is Aware of their faith. And if you find them to be faithful, do not send them back to the unbelievers. They are not lawful for them, nor are they lawful for them. But give them what they have spent. You are not at fault if you marry them, provided you give them their compensation. And do not hold on to ties with unbelieving women, but demand what you have spent, and let them demand what they have spent. This is the rule of Allah; He rules among you. Allah is Knowing and Wise.
