What Surah Al-Muzzammil is about

Al-Muzzammil is the 73rd surah of the Quran, revealed in Mecca, with 20 verses. Its name means the one wrapped in garments, from its first verse, which addresses the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in that way. It belongs to the early period of his mission.

Verses 1 to 4 tell him to stand in prayer at night, all but a little of it, half of it or a little less or more, and to recite the Quran in a measured, careful way. Verse 5 explains why: a heavy word is about to be given to him. Verses 6 and 7 add that rising at night has a stronger effect and makes speech more upright, while the day is full of long work. Verses 8 and 9 ask him to remember his Lord's name, devote himself to Him completely, and take Him as his trustee.

Verses 10 to 14 ask for patience with what his opponents say and a dignified withdrawal from them, and warn the comfortable deniers of chains, fire and a Day when the mountains become heaps of sand. Verses 15 and 16 compare the Prophet's mission to the messenger sent to Pharaoh, who disobeyed and was seized. Verse 17 describes that Day as one that would turn children's hair grey.

Verse 20, one of the longest verses in the last part of the Quran, changes tone. It acknowledges that the Prophet ﷺ and a group with him had been standing nearly two-thirds of the night, or half, or a third. Allah knows they cannot keep this up, so He has eased it for them, and asks them to recite as much of the Quran as is easy, mentioning those who are ill, those travelling for a living and those fighting in His cause. Many scholars hold that this verse was revealed later than the rest of the surah.

Main themes

  1. Standing at night

The surah opens by calling the Prophet ﷺ to rise for prayer for a large part of the night. Verse 6 says the night vigil makes a deeper impression and is better suited for recitation.

    Verses 1–7
  2. Reciting with care

Verse 4 asks for the Quran to be recited in a measured, deliberate way, and verse 5 prepares the Prophet ﷺ for the weight of the message to come. The word used in verse 4, tartil, became the name for careful recitation.

    Verses 4–5
  3. Devotion and trust

Verses 8 to 10 ask for remembrance of Allah's name, complete devotion to Him, reliance on Him as the Lord of the east and west, and graceful patience with critics.

    Verses 8–10
  4. A warning drawn from Pharaoh

The surah compares the Prophet ﷺ to the messenger sent to Pharaoh and warns of a Day so severe it would turn children grey.

    Verses 11–19
  5. Read what is easy

The final verse lightens the night prayer out of mercy, recognizing illness, work and other duties. It asks believers to recite what is easy, keep up prayer and charity, and seek Allah's forgiveness.

    Verse 20

Verses to know

Or add to it; and chant the Quran rhythmically.
Al-Muzzammil 73:4

The instruction to recite the Quran slowly and carefully, from which the word tartil, measured recitation, is taken.

The vigil of night is more effective, and better suited for recitation.
Al-Muzzammil 73:6

This verse explains why the night is set apart: prayer then has a stronger effect and words are more focused.

Your Lord knows that you stay up nearly two-thirds of the night, or half of it, or one-third of it, along with a group of those with you. Allah designed the night and the day. He knows that you are unable to sustain it, so He has pardoned you. So read of the Quran what is possible for you. He knows that some of you may be ill; and others traveling through the land, seeking Allah’s bounty; and others fighting in Allah’s cause. So read of it what is possible for you, and observe the prayers, and give regular charity, and lend Allah a generous loan. Whatever good you advance for yourselves, you will find it with Allah, better and generously rewarded. And seek Allah’s forgiveness, for Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Al-Muzzammil 73:20

A verse of mercy that eases the long night prayer, acknowledging that people are sick, travelling to earn a living or occupied with other struggles. It twice asks believers to recite what is easy for them.
