What Surah An-Naml is about

An-Naml, The Ant, is the 27th surah of the Quran. It was revealed in Mecca and takes its name from verse 18, in which an ant warns the others to get into their homes before Solomon's army crushes them without noticing. Verses 1 to 55 are in juz 19 and the rest of the surah is in juz 20.

After the letters Ta, Seen, the surah describes the Quran as guidance for believers who pray, give charity and are certain of the Hereafter (1 to 3). It then briefly recalls Moses (Musa) seeing a fire while traveling with his family and being called by Allah, given the staff and the shining hand as signs to Pharaoh (7 to 14).

The heart of the surah is the story of Solomon (Sulayman), who inherited from David (Dawud) and was taught the speech of birds (16). When his army reaches the valley of the ants, he smiles at an ant's warning and prays to be grateful for Allah's blessings (18 to 19). The hoopoe returns from Sheba with news of a queen whose people worship the sun (20 to 26). Solomon sends a letter that begins with Allah's name (30 to 31). The queen consults her advisors, sends a gift that Solomon refuses, and then comes to him. Her throne is brought in the blink of an eye by one who had knowledge of the Book (40), and when she enters the palace with its glass floor she submits with Solomon to Allah, Lord of the worlds (44).

Brief accounts of Salih and Lot (Lut) follow (45 to 58). Then verses 59 to 64 ask a series of questions: who created the heavens and earth and sent rain, who made the earth stable, who answers the distressed person when they call, who guides through darkness, who begins creation and repeats it. Each ends by asking whether there is any god besides Allah. The surah closes with the Last Day, the mountains passing like clouds (88), and the Prophet ﷺ's instruction to recite the Quran (92).

Main themes

  1. Guidance for those certain of the Hereafter

The opening describes the Quran as guidance and good news for believers who pray, give charity and are sure of the Hereafter. Those who deny the Hereafter are described as wandering, their deeds made to look good to them.

    Verses 1–6
  2. Moses called at the fire

Moses sees a fire and goes to bring back news or a burning brand, and is instead addressed by Allah. He is given the staff and the white hand as two of nine signs, and Pharaoh's people reject them though they know in themselves they are true.

    Verses 7–14
  3. Solomon and the ant

Solomon, given knowledge and the speech of birds, leads an army of jinn, people and birds. When he hears an ant warning her colony, he smiles and asks Allah to help him be thankful and to do good that pleases Him.

    Verses 15–19
  4. The hoopoe and the Queen of Sheba

The hoopoe brings news of a queen and her people who worship the sun. Solomon writes to her in Allah's name, refuses her gift, has her throne brought before she arrives, and finally she recognizes her mistake and submits to Allah along with Solomon.

    Verses 20–44
  5. Is there a god besides Allah

After brief stories of Salih and Lot, five verses ask who created the world, made it habitable, answers those in distress, guides people through darkness, and provides for them. Each question ends by asking whether any other god is with Allah.

    Verses 59–66
  6. The Last Day

The surah ends with the trumpet, the creature brought out of the earth, and the mountains that seem fixed but move like clouds. Good deeds bring something better and safety from the terror of that Day.

    Verses 82–93

Verses to know

18Until, when they came upon the Valley of Ants, an ant said, “O ants! Go into your nests, lest Solomon and his troops crush you without noticing.” 19He smiled and laughed at her words, and said, “My Lord, direct me to be thankful for the blessings You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do good works that please You. And admit me, by Your grace, into the company of Your virtuous servants.”
An-Naml 27:18–19

An ant warns her colony, and Solomon, one of the most powerful kings in the Quran, responds by smiling and praying to be grateful. The scene gives the surah its name.

It is from Solomon, and it is, ‘In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.
An-Naml 27:30

Solomon's letter to the Queen of Sheba begins with 'In the Name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful', so the basmala appears here in the middle of a story as well as at the start of the surah. Because Surah At-Tawbah has no basmala at its start, this verse keeps the total count in the Quran at 114.

He who had knowledge from the Book said, “I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you.” And when he saw it settled before him, he said, “This is from the grace of my Lord, to test me, whether I am grateful or ungrateful. He who is grateful, his gratitude is to his own credit; but he who is ungrateful—my Lord is Independent and Generous.”
An-Naml 27:40

When the throne appears before him, Solomon says this is from his Lord's grace to test whether he will be grateful, and that gratitude benefits the grateful person themselves.

Or, who answers the one in need when he prays to Him, and relieves adversity, and makes you successors on earth? Is there another god with Allah? How hardly you pay attention.
An-Naml 27:62

This verse asks who answers the person in desperate need when they call, and removes their hardship. Many Muslims recall it when making supplication in difficult times.

When Surah An-Naml is recited

Verse 26 is one of the verses of prostration, and many Muslims prostrate when reciting or hearing it. There is no other well-established practice of reciting this surah at a particular time.

  37. 37

  41. 41

Walaqad arsalna ila thamooda akhahum salihan ani oAAbudoo Allaha faitha hum fareeqani yakhtasimoona

And We sent to Thamood their brother Saleh: “Worship Allah.” But they became two disputing factions.

  46. 46

He said, “O my people, why are you quick to do evil rather than good? If only you would seek Allah’s forgiveness, so that you may be shown mercy.”

  47. 47

Qaloo ittayyarna bika wabiman maAAaka qala tairukum AAinda Allahi bal antum qawmun tuftanoona

They said, “We consider you an ill omen, and those with you.” He said, “Your omen is with Allah. In fact, you are a people being tested.”

  48. 48

Wakana fee almadeenati tisAAatu rahtin yufsidoona fee alardi wala yuslihoona

In the city was a gang of nine who made mischief in the land and did no good.

  49. 49

They said, “Swear by Allah to one another that we will attack him and his family by night, and then tell his guardian, ‘We did not witness the murder of his family, and we are being truthful.’”

  50. 50

Wamakaroo makran wamakarna makran wahum la yashAAuroona

They planned a plan, and We planned a plan, but they did not notice.

  51. 51

Faonthur kayfa kana AAaqibatu makrihim anna dammarnahum waqawmahum ajmaAAeena

So note the outcome of their planning; We destroyed them and their people, all together.

    Waanjayna allatheena amanoo wakanoo yattaqoona

And We saved those who believed and were pious.

  54. 54

Walootan ith qala liqawmihi atatoona alfahishata waantum tubsiroona

And Lot, when he said to his people, “Do you commit lewdness with open eyes?

  55. 55

Ainnakum latatoona alrrijala shahwatan min dooni alnnisai bal antum qawmun tajhaloona

Do you lust after men instead of women? You are truly ignorant people.”

  56. 56

Fama kana jawaba qawmihi illa an qaloo akhrijoo ala lootin min qaryatikum innahum onasun yatatahharoona

But the only response of his people was to say, “Expel the family of Lot from your town. They are purist people.”

  57. 57

Faanjaynahu waahlahu illa imraatahu qaddarnaha mina alghabireena

So We saved him and his family, except for his wife, whom We destined to be among the laggards.

  58. 58

On the Day when We gather from every community a group of those who rejected Our revelations; and they will be restrained.

  84. 84

Hatta itha jaoo qala akaththabtum biayatee walam tuheetoo biha AAilman ammatha kuntum taAAmaloona

Until, when they arrive, He will say, “Did you reject My revelations without comprehending them? Or what is it you were doing?”

  85. 85

WawaqaAAa alqawlu AAalayhim bima thalamoo fahum la yantiqoona

The Word will come down upon them for their wrongdoing, and they will not speak.

  86. 86

Alam yaraw anna jaAAalna allayla liyaskunoo feehi waalnnahara mubsiran inna fee thalika laayatin liqawmin yuminoona

Do they not see that We made the night for them to rest therein, and the day for visibility? Surely in that are signs for people who believe.

  87. 87

Wayawma yunfakhu fee alssoori fafaziAAa man fee alssamawati waman fee alardi illa man shaa Allahu wakullun atawhu dakhireena

On the Day when the Trumpet is blown, everyone in the heavens and the earth will be horrified, except whomever Allah wills; and everyone will come before Him in humility.

  88. 88

Watara aljibala tahsabuha jamidatan wahiya tamurru marra alssahabi sunAAa Allahi allathee atqana kulla shayin innahu khabeerun bima tafAAaloona

And you see the mountains, and imagine them fixed, yet they pass, as the passing of the clouds—the making of Allah, who has perfected everything. He is fully Informed of what you do.

  89. 89

Man jaa bialhasanati falahu khayrun minha wahum min fazaAAin yawmaithin aminoona

Whoever brings a virtue will receive better than it—and they will be safe from the horrors of that Day.

  90. 90

Waman jaa bialssayyiati fakubbat wujoohuhum fee alnnari hal tujzawna illa ma kuntum taAAmaloona

But whoever brings evil—their faces will be tumbled into the Fire. Will you be rewarded except for what you used to do?

  91. 91

Innama omirtu an aAAbuda rabba hathihi albaldati allathee harramaha walahu kullu shayin waomirtu an akoona mina almuslimeena

“I was commanded to worship the Lord of this town, who has sanctified it, and to whom everything belongs; and I was commanded to be of those who submit.

  92. 92

Waan atluwa alqurana famani ihtada fainnama yahtadee linafsihi waman dalla faqul innama ana mina almunthireena

And to recite the Quran.” Whoever is guided—is guided to his own advantage. And whoever goes astray, then say, “I am one of the warners.”

  93. 93

Waquli alhamdu lillahi sayureekum ayatihi fataAArifoonaha wama rabbuka bighafilin AAamma taAAmaloona

And say, “Praise belongs to Allah; He will show you His signs, and you will recognize them. Your Lord is not heedless of what you do.”
