What Surah An-Nasr is about
Surah An-Nasr, "The Divine Support", is one of the last surahs revealed. Verse 1 speaks of the coming of Allah's help and the conquest, which commentators understand as the conquest of Mecca. Verse 2 describes people entering Allah's religion in crowds, as whole tribes across Arabia accepted Islam after Mecca opened.
Verse 3 gives an unexpected response to victory: not celebration, but glorifying Allah with praise and asking His forgiveness, for He always accepts repentance.
Sahih al-Bukhari records that Umar ibn al-Khattab asked senior Companions about this surah, and Ibn Abbas explained that it signaled the approaching end of the Prophet's life, since his mission was complete. Umar said he understood the same. Aisha also reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim that after it was revealed the Prophet ﷺ often said words of praise and forgiveness in his bowing and prostration, following verse 3.
Main themes
Victory comes from Allah
Verse 1 calls the victory Allah's help, not the result of human strength. The surah frames success as a gift.
Verses 1–2Humility at the moment of success
The command at the height of victory is to praise Allah and seek forgiveness. It is a model of how to respond when things go well.
Verse 3
Verses to know
فَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡهُۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ تَوَّابَۢا ﴿٣﴾
Then celebrate the praise of your Lord, and seek His forgiveness. He is the Accepter of Repentance.
At the point of greatest success, the Prophet ﷺ is told to praise Allah and seek forgiveness. Aisha reported that he acted on this frequently in his prayers in his final period.
When Surah An-Nasr is recited
Following this surah, the Prophet ﷺ is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim to have often said in his bowing and prostration: Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and praise be to You; O Allah, forgive me. Many Muslims say this in their own prayers. Some narrations in Sunan at-Tirmidhi say An-Nasr equals a quarter of the Quran, but scholars have questioned them.
