What Surah Ar-Rahman is about
Surah Ar-Rahman is the 55th surah of the Quran and has 78 verses. It takes its name from its first verse, which is a single word: Ar-Rahman, "the Most Merciful". It is listed here as Medinan, though many scholars consider it Meccan, as the early reports differ. It is one of the most recited and best-loved surahs of the Quran, known for its rhythm and for the refrain that runs through it.
The surah begins with Allah's gifts in a careful order: the Most Merciful taught the Quran, created the human being, and taught him clear speech (55:1-4). It then widens to the sun and moon on their exact courses, the stars and trees bowing, the sky raised high, and the balance He set up, which people are told to keep with fairness and not upset (55:5-9). The earth is laid out for its creatures, with fruit, clustered date palms, grain and fragrant plants (55:10-12).
Verse 13 introduces the question that defines the surah: which of your Lord's favors will you deny? It is addressed to two audiences, humans and jinn, which is why verses 14-15 describe the creation of one from clay and the other from fire. From there the refrain recurs every two or three verses, 31 times in all, turning each blessing into a question the listener has to answer.
Verses 17-25 point to the Lord of the two easts and two wests, two seas that meet with a barrier between them, the pearls and coral they yield, and ships standing high on the sea. Then the tone shifts. Everyone on earth will pass away, and only your Lord, full of majesty and honor, remains (55:26-27). Everyone in the heavens and earth asks of Him, and every day He is at work (55:29).
Verses 31-45 speak of the Day of Judgment: humans and jinn cannot pass beyond the bounds of the heavens and earth without His authority, the sky splits and turns rose-red, and the guilty are known by their marks. Verse 46 then promises two gardens for whoever feared standing before his Lord, described with flowing springs, fruit of every kind in pairs, brocade-lined couches and companions of modest gaze. Verse 60 asks whether the reward of goodness can be anything but goodness.
Verses 62-76 describe two more gardens beneath the first two, deep green, with gushing springs, dates and pomegranates. Many scholars see the four gardens as two ranks, matching the foremost and the people of the right described in the next surah, Al-Waqi'ah. The surah ends as it began, with Allah's name: blessed is the name of your Lord, full of majesty and honor (55:78).
Main themes
The Most Merciful taught the Quran
The surah opens with Allah's name Ar-Rahman and lists His first gift as teaching the Quran, even before mentioning the creation of the human being. Speech and understanding follow, then the order of the heavens and the balance He established. People are told to keep that balance with justice and not to cheat in it.
Verses 1–12Which of your Lord's favors will you deny
From verse 13 the refrain addresses both humans and jinn, whose creation from clay and from fire is described in verses 14-15. It repeats 31 times, after blessings, after warnings, and after descriptions of Paradise, so that every part of the surah is turned into a question of gratitude.
Verses 13–16Signs in the east, the west and the seas
Allah is Lord of the two easts and two wests, the different points where the sun rises and sets through the year. Two bodies of water meet with a barrier between them that they do not cross, and pearls, coral and great ships are counted among His gifts.
Verses 17–25All will pass except your Lord
In two short verses the surah reminds the listener that everyone on earth will perish and only the Lord, full of majesty and honor, remains; the Arabic speaks of His Face. Every creature in the heavens and earth asks of Him, and He is constantly attending to His creation.
Verses 26–30The Day of Judgment for humans and jinn
Humans and jinn are challenged to escape the bounds of the heavens and earth, which they cannot do without His authority. The sky splits and reddens, the guilty are recognized by their marks, and they move between Hell and boiling water.
Verses 31–45Two gardens, and two more
For whoever feared standing before his Lord there are two gardens, described with springs, fruits in pairs, brocade-lined couches and pure companions. Verse 60 sums up the principle that excellence is rewarded with excellence. Two further gardens are then described, and the surah closes by blessing the name of the Lord.

1The Compassionate. 2Has taught the Quran. 3He created man. 4And taught him clear expression.
The opening sequence puts teaching the Quran before the creation of humanity, which many scholars read as a sign that revelation is the greatest of Allah's mercies.
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ﴿١٣﴾
So which of your Lord’s marvels will you deny?
The first appearance of the surah's refrain, addressed to both humans and jinn. It recurs 31 times between verses 13 and 77.
26Everyone upon it is perishing. 27But will remain the Presence of your Lord, Full of Majesty and Splendor.
Two short verses that hold the surah's center: everything on earth perishes, and only the Lord, full of majesty and honor, remains.
هَلۡ جَزَآءُ ٱلۡإِحۡسَٰنِ إِلَّا ٱلۡإِحۡسَٰنُ ﴿٦٠﴾
Is the reward of goodness anything but goodness?
A brief question that expresses a principle running through the Quran: the reward for doing good is nothing but good.
When Surah Ar-Rahman is recited
Many Muslims listen to or recite Surah Ar-Rahman regularly for its beauty and its reminders of gratitude, though no specific day or time for it is established in authentic hadith. Sunan at-Tirmidhi reports, from Jabir, that the Prophet ﷺ recited this surah to his companions and they listened in silence. He told them he had recited it to the jinn, who responded better: each time he reached the refrain, they said that they denied none of their Lord's favors and that praise belongs to Him. Because of this, some Muslims make the same response when they hear the refrain. A popular saying that Ar-Rahman is the "bride of the Quran" comes from a narration in al-Bayhaqi's Shu'ab al-Iman that hadith scholars consider weak, and claims that reciting it cures specific illnesses have no authentic basis.
