What Surah Ar-Rum is about

Ar-Rum, The Romans, is the 30th surah of the Quran and lies within juz 21. It was revealed in Mecca and takes its name from verse 2, which mentions the defeat of the Romans. This refers to the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire, which suffered heavy losses to the Persians in the early 7th century. Verses 3 and 4 say that, after their defeat, the Romans would be victorious within a few years, and that the believers would rejoice on that day.

The surah then widens from that one event to a larger point. Verse 7 says people know the outward side of worldly life but are heedless of the Hereafter. Verses 8 to 10 tell them to reflect on themselves and look at the ruins of earlier, stronger nations. Verses 11 to 16 describe the Hour, when people will be separated into those who rejoice in gardens and those brought to punishment.

The best-known part of the surah is a series of verses beginning 'and of His signs' (20 to 25). They point to human beings created from dust and spreading across the earth (20), spouses created so people may find rest in one another, with love and mercy placed between them (21), the variety of languages and colors (22), sleep by night and day (23), lightning that brings both fear and hope (24), and the heavens and earth standing by His command (25). Verse 30 then calls people to the natural disposition, the fitra, which Allah has placed in every human being.

The final part speaks of giving to relatives, the poor and travelers (38), contrasts interest with charity given for Allah's sake (39), and says corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what people's hands have done (41). It returns to the cycle of human life, from weakness to strength and back to weakness and gray hair (54), and closes by telling the Prophet ﷺ to be patient, because Allah's promise is true (60).

Main themes

  1. The Romans' defeat and promised victory

The surah opens by announcing the Romans' defeat in a nearby land and predicting that they would win within a few years. The point is that the matter belongs to Allah before and after, and that His promise does not fail.

    Verses 1–6
  2. The outward and the hidden

People are described as knowing the surface of worldly life while overlooking the Hereafter. They are told to reflect on their own creation and travel to see what happened to more powerful nations before them.

    Verses 7–16
  3. And of His signs

Six verses each begin by pointing to one of Allah's signs: human creation from dust, the love and mercy between spouses, the variety of languages and colors, sleep, lightning and rain, and the order of the heavens and earth. Each ends by naming the kind of person who will benefit: those who reflect, know, listen or understand.

    Verses 20–25
  4. The natural disposition

Verse 30 calls people to turn toward the true religion as the natural disposition Allah created in them, and says His creation cannot be changed. The following verses warn against splitting religion into rival sects.

    Verses 28–35
  5. Giving, interest and corruption

Believers are told to give relatives, the poor and travelers their due, and are reminded that interest does not increase with Allah while charity does. Verse 41 links the corruption visible on land and sea to what people themselves have done.

    Verses 36–45
  6. From weakness to weakness, and patience

The surah describes rain reviving dead land as a picture of resurrection, then traces a human life from weakness to strength and back to old age. It ends by telling the Prophet ﷺ to be patient and not to be shaken by those who lack certainty.

    Verses 46–60

Verses to know

2The Romans have been defeated. 3In a nearby territory. But following their defeat, they will be victorious. 4In a few years. The matter is up to Allah, in the past, and in the future. On that day, the believers will rejoice.
Ar-Rum 30:2–4

These verses predicted that the defeated Romans would be victorious within a few years. Muslim historians have long pointed to the Byzantine recovery against Persia in the following decade as the fulfillment of this prediction.

And of His signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves, so that you may find tranquility in them; and He planted love and compassion between you. In this are signs for people who reflect.
Ar-Rum 30:21

This verse describes spouses as created so that people may find tranquility in each other, with love and mercy placed between them. It is one of the most frequently read verses at Muslim weddings.

And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the diversity of your languages and colors. In this are signs for those who know.
Ar-Rum 30:22

The diversity of human languages and colors is presented as one of Allah's signs, something to reflect on rather than divide over.

Corruption has appeared on land and sea, because of what people’s hands have earned, in order to make them taste some of what they have done, so that they might return.
Ar-Rum 30:41

This verse says corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what people have done, so they may taste some of the result and turn back. It is often cited in discussions of human responsibility for the world.

When Surah Ar-Rum is recited

Verse 21 is commonly recited at Muslim weddings and marriage ceremonies because it describes the tranquility, love and mercy that Allah places between spouses. There is no well-established practice of reciting the whole surah at a particular time.

WaAAda Allahi la yukhlifu Allahu waAAdahu walakinna akthara alnnasi la yaAAlamoona

The promise of Allah—Allah never breaks His promise, but most people do not know.

  7. 7

YaAAlamoona thahiran mina alhayati alddunya wahum AAani alakhirati hum ghafiloona

They know an outer aspect of the worldly life, but they are heedless of the Hereafter.

  8. 8

Awalam yatafakkaroo fee anfusihim ma khalaqa Allahu alssamawati waalarda wama baynahuma illa bialhaqqi waajalin musamman wainna katheeran mina alnnasi biliqai rabbihim lakafiroona

Do they not reflect within themselves? Allah did not create the heavens and the earth, and what is between them, except with reason, and for a specific duration. But most people, regarding meeting their Lord, are disbelievers.

  9. 9

Awalam yaseeroo fee alardi fayanthuroo kayfa kana AAaqibatu allatheena min qablihim kanoo ashadda minhum quwwatan waatharoo alarda waAAamarooha akthara mimma AAamarooha wajaathum rusuluhum bialbayyinati fama kana Allahu liyathlimahum walakin kanoo anfusahum yathlimoona

Have they not traveled the earth and seen how those before them ended up? They were more powerful than them, and they cultivated the land and developed it more than they developed it, and their messengers came to them with clear signs. Allah would never wrong them, but they used to wrong themselves.

  10. 10

Thumma kana AAaqibata allatheena asaoo alssooa an kaththaboo biayati Allahi wakanoo biha yastahzioona

Then, evil was the end of those who committed evil. That is because they rejected Allah’s revelations, and used to ridicule them.

  11. 11

Allahu yabdao alkhalqa thumma yuAAeeduhu thumma ilayhi turjaAAoona

Allah originates creation, and then repeats it. Then to Him you will be returned.

    Wayawma taqoomu alssaAAatu yublisu almujrimoona

On the Day when the Hour takes place, the guilty will despair.

  13. 13

Walam yakun lahum min shurakaihim shufaAAao wakanoo bishurakaihim kafireena

They will have no intercessors from among their idols, and they will disown their partners.

  14. 14

    Wayawma taqoomu alssaAAatu yawmaithin yatafarraqoona

On the Day when the Hour takes place—on that Day they will separate.

  15. 15

Faamma allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati fahum fee rawdatin yuhbaroona

As for those who believed and did good deeds—they will be delighted in meadows.

  16. 16

Waamma allatheena kafaroo wakaththaboo biayatina waliqai alakhirati faolaika fee alAAathabi muhdaroona

But as for those who disbelieved, and rejected Our signs and the encounter of the Hereafter—those will be hauled into the torment.

  17. 17

His is the praise in the heavens and on earth, and in the evening, and when you reach midday.

  19. 19

Yukhriju alhayya mina almayyiti wayukhriju almayyita mina alhayyi wayuhyee alarda baAAda mawtiha wakathalika tukhrajoona

He brings the living out of the dead, and He brings the dead out of the living, and He revives the land after it had died. Likewise you will be resurrected.

  20. 20

To Him belongs everyone in the heavens and the earth. All are submissive to Him.

  27. 27

Daraba lakum mathalan min anfusikum hal lakum mi mma malakat aymanukum min shurakaa fee ma razaqnakum faantum feehi sawaon takhafoonahum kakheefatikum anfusakum kathalika nufassilu alayati liqawmin yaAAqiloona

He illustrates an example for you, from your own selves: do you make your servants full partners in the wealth We have given you? Do you revere them as you revere one another? We thus explain the revelations for a people who understand.

  29. 29

Bali ittabaAAa allatheena thalamoo ahwaahum bighayri AAilmin faman yahdee man adalla Allahu wama lahum min nasireena

Yet the wrongdoers follow their desires without knowledge. But who can guide whom Allah leaves astray? They will have no helpers.

  30. 30

Faaqim wajhaka lilddeeni haneefan fitrata Allahi allatee fatara alnnasa AAalayha la tabdeela likhalqi Allahi thalika alddeenu alqayyimu walakinna akthara alnnasi la yaAAlamoona

So devote yourself to the religion of monotheism—the natural instinct Allah has instilled in mankind. There is no altering Allah’s creation. This is the true religion, but most people do not know.

  31. 31

Muneebeena ilayhi waittaqoohu waaqeemoo alssalata wala takoonoo mina almushrikeena

Turning towards Him—and be conscious of Him, and perform the prayer, and do not be of the idolaters.

  32. 32

Mina allatheena farraqoo deenahum wakanoo shiyaAAan kullu hizbin bima ladayhim farihoona

Of those who divided their religion, and became sects; each faction pleased with what they have.

  33. 33

Waitha massa alnnasa durrun daAAaw rabbahum muneebeena ilayhi thumma itha athaqahum minhu rahmatan itha fareequn minhum birabbihim yushrikoona

When affliction touches the people, they call on their Lord, turning to Him in repentance. But then, when He gives them a taste of His mercy, some of them attribute partners to their Lord.

  34. 34

Liyakfuroo bima ataynahum fatamattaAAoo fasawfa taAAlamoona

To show ingratitude for what We have given them. Indulge yourselves—you will surely know.

  35. 35

Am anzalna AAalayhim sultanan fahuwa yatakallamu bima kanoo bihi yushrikoona

Have We sent down to them any authority, which speaks in support of their idols?

  36. 36

Waitha athaqna alnnasa rahmatan farihoo biha wain tusibhum sayyiatun bima qaddamat aydeehim itha hum yaqnatoona

When We give people a taste of mercy, they rejoice in it. But when adversity befalls them, because of what their hands have perpetrated, they begin to despair.

  37. 37

Awalam yaraw anna Allaha yabsutu alrrizqa liman yashao wayaqdiru inna fee thalika laayatin liqawmin yuminoona

Do they not see that Allah expands the provision for whomever He wills, or restricts it? Surely in this are signs for people who believe.

  38. 38

Faati tha alqurba haqqahu waalmiskeena waibna alssabeeli thalika khayrun lillatheena yureedoona wajha Allahi waolaika humu almuflihoona

So give the relative his rights, and the destitute, and the wayfarer. That is best for those who seek Allah’s presence. Those are the prosperous.

  39. 39

Wama ataytum min riban liyarbuwa fee amwali alnnasi fala yarboo AAinda Allahi wama ataytum min zakatin tureedoona wajha Allahi faolaika humu almudAAifoona

The usury you practice, seeking thereby to multiply people’s wealth, will not multiply with Allah. But what you give in charity, desiring Allah’s approval—these are the multipliers.

  40. 40

Allahu allathee khalaqakum thumma razaqakum thumma yumeetukum thumma yuhyeekum hal min shurakaikum man yafAAalu min thalikum min shayin subhanahu wataAAala AAamma yushrikoona

Allah is He who created you, then provides for you, then makes you die, then brings you back to life. Can any of your idols do any of that? Glorified is He, and exalted above what they associate.

  41. 41

Thahara alfasadu fee albarri waalbahri bima kasabat aydee alnnasi liyutheeqahum baAAda allathee AAamiloo laAAallahum yarjiAAoona

Corruption has appeared on land and sea, because of what people’s hands have earned, in order to make them taste some of what they have done, so that they might return.

  42. 42

Qul seeroo fee alardi faonthuroo kayfa kana AAaqibatu allatheena min qablu kana aktharuhum mushrikeena

Say, “Roam the earth, and observe the fate of those who came before. Most of them were idolaters.”

  43. 43

Faaqim wajhaka lilddeeni alqayyimi min qabli an yatiya yawmun la maradda lahu mina Allahi yawmaithin yassaddaAAoona

So devote yourself to the upright religion, before there comes from Allah a Day that cannot be averted. On that Day, they will be shocked.

  44. 44

Man kafara faAAalayhi kufruhu waman AAamila salihan falianfusihim yamhadoona

Whoever disbelieves, upon him falls his disbelief. And whoever acts righteously—they are preparing for themselves.

  45. 45

Liyajziya allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati min fadlihi innahu la yuhibbu alkafireena

So that He may reward those who have believed and done the righteous deeds out of His bounty. Indeed, He does not love the ungrateful.

  46. 46

Wamin ayatihi an yursila alrriyaha mubashshiratin waliyutheeqakum min rahmatihi walitajriya alfulku biamrihi walitabtaghoo min fadlihi walaAAallakum tashkuroona

And of His signs is that He sends the winds bearing good news, to give you a taste of His mercy, and so that the ships may sail by His command, and so that you may seek of His bounty, and so that you may give thanks.

  47. 47

Walaqad arsalna min qablika rusulan ila qawmihim fajaoohum bialbayyinati faintaqamna mina allatheena ajramoo wakana haqqan AAalayna nasru almumineena

Before you, We sent messengers to their people. They came to them with clear proofs. Then We took revenge on those who sinned. It is incumbent on Us to help the believers.

  48. 48

Allahu allathee yursilu alrriyaha fatutheeru sahaban fayabsutuhu fee alssamai kayfa yashao wayajAAaluhu kisafan fatara alwadqa yakhruju min khilalihi faitha asaba bihi man yashao min AAibadihi itha hum yastabshiroona

Allah is He who sends the winds. They stir up clouds. Then He spreads them in the sky as He wills. And He breaks them apart. Then you see raindrops issuing from their midst. Then, when He makes it fall upon whom He wills of His servants, behold, they rejoice.

  49. 49

Wain kanoo min qabli an yunazzala AAalayhim min qablihi lamubliseena

Although they were before this—before it was sent down upon them—in despair.

  50. 50

Faonthur ila athari rahmati Allahi kayfa yuhyee alarda baAAda mawtiha inna thalika lamuhyee almawta wahuwa AAala kulli shayin qadeerun

So observe the effects of Allah’s mercy—how He revives the earth after it was dead. Indeed, He is the Reviver of the dead. He is Capable of everything.

  51. 51

Walain arsalna reehan faraawhu musfarran lathalloo min baAAdihi yakfuroona

But if We send a wind, and they see it turning things yellow, they would continue thereafter to disbelieve.

  52. 52

Fainnaka la tusmiAAu almawta wala tusmiAAu alssumma aldduAAaa itha wallaw mudbireena

You cannot make the dead hear, nor can you make the deaf hear the call when they turn away.

  53. 53

Wama anta bihadi alAAumyi AAan dalalatihim in tusmiAAu illa man yuminu biayatina fahum muslimoona

Nor can you guide the blind out of their error. You can make hear only those who believe in Our signs, and so have submitted.

  54. 54

Allahu allathee khalaqakum min daAAfin thumma jaAAala min baAAdi daAAfin quwwatan thumma jaAAala min baAAdi quwwatin daAAfan washaybatan yakhluqu ma yashao wahuwa alAAaleemu alqadeeru

Allah is He who created you weak, then after weakness gave you strength, then after strength gave you weakness and gray hair. He creates whatever He wills. He is the Omniscient, the Omnipotent.

  55. 55

Wayawma taqoomu alssaAAatu yuqsimu almujrimoona ma labithoo ghayra saAAatin kathalika kanoo yufakoona

On the Day when the Hour takes place, the sinners will swear they had stayed but an hour. Thus they were deluded.

  56. 56

Waqala allatheena ootoo alAAilma waaleemana laqad labithtum fee kitabi Allahi ila yawmi albaAAthi fahatha yawmu albaAAthi walakinnakum kuntum la taAAlamoona

But those endowed with knowledge and faith will say, “You remained in Allah’s Book until the Day of Resurrection. This is the Day of Resurrection, but you did not know.”

  57. 57

Fayawmaithin la yanfaAAu allatheena thalamoo maAAthiratuhum wala hum yustaAAtaboona

On that Day, the sinners’ excuses will not benefit them, nor will they be excused.

  58. 58

Walaqad darabna lilnnasi fee hatha alqurani min kulli mathalin walain jitahum biayatin layaqoolanna allatheena kafaroo in antum illa mubtiloona

We have cited in this Quran for the people every sort of parable. But even if you bring them a miracle, those who disbelieve will say, “You are nothing but fakers.”

  59. 59

Kathalika yatbaAAu Allahu AAala quloobi allatheena la yaAAlamoona

Allah thus seals the hearts of those who do not know.

  60. 60

Faisbir inna waAAda Allahi haqqun wala yastakhiffannaka allatheena la yooqinoona

So be patient. The promise of Allah is true. And do not let those who lack certainty belittle you.
