What Surah As-Sajdah is about

As-Sajdah, The Prostration, is the 32nd surah of the Quran and lies within juz 21. It was revealed in Mecca and is named after verse 15, a verse of prostration, which describes believers who fall down in prostration when they are reminded of Allah's verses. It is also known by its opening words, Alif Lam Mim Tanzil.

After the opening letters, verses 2 and 3 state that the Book is undoubtedly from the Lord of the worlds and answer those who say the Prophet ﷺ made it up. Verses 4 to 6 describe Allah creating the heavens and earth in six days and directing every affair. Verses 7 to 9 then trace human creation: from clay, then from a small drop of fluid, then shaped and given of His spirit, and finally given hearing, sight and hearts, though people rarely give thanks.

Verses 10 to 14 turn to those who deny the resurrection. The angel of death will take them (11), and the surah pictures them standing before their Lord with heads lowered, asking to be sent back so they can do good (12). In contrast, verses 15 to 17 describe the believers who prostrate, whose sides leave their beds at night as they call on their Lord in fear and hope, and verse 17 says no soul knows what delight is hidden for them. Verse 18 asks whether a believer is like a defiant sinner, and answers that they are not equal.

The surah ends by recalling the Book given to Moses (Musa) and the leaders among the Children of Israel who guided by Allah's command as long as they were patient (23 to 24). It points to water driven to dry land to grow crops (27), and closes by telling the Prophet ﷺ to turn away from the deniers and wait, as they too are waiting (30).

Main themes

  1. The Book from the Lord of the worlds

The surah opens by saying the revelation is without doubt from Allah, and answers the claim that the Prophet invented it. Its purpose is to warn a people who had received no warner before.

    Verses 1–3
  2. Creation of the heavens and of the human being

Allah created the heavens and earth in six days and directs every matter. He began the human being from clay, continued its line from a drop of fluid, then shaped it, breathed into it of His spirit and gave it hearing, sight and understanding.

    Verses 4–9
  3. Regret too late

Those who doubt resurrection are reminded of the angel of death. The surah then shows them before their Lord, finally convinced and begging to be sent back to do good.

    Verses 10–14
  4. Those who prostrate at night

The believers fall in prostration when reminded of Allah's verses, leave their beds to pray in fear and hope, and give from what they have been given. Their reward is a delight that no soul knows.

    Verses 15–22
  5. Moses, patience and leadership

Allah gave Moses the Book as guidance for the Children of Israel and made leaders from among them who guided by His command because they were patient and certain of His signs.

    Verses 23–30

Verses to know

Then He proportioned him, and breathed into him of His spirit. Then He gave you the hearing, and the eyesight, and the brains—but rarely do you give thanks.
As-Sajdah 32:9

This verse describes Allah shaping the human being and breathing into it of His spirit, then giving hearing, sight and hearts, and notes how little people give thanks.

They believe in Our communications, those who, when reminded of them, fall down prostrate, and glorify their Lord with praise, and are not proud.
As-Sajdah 32:15

This is the verse of prostration that gives the surah its name. Many Muslims prostrate when they recite or hear it.

16Their sides shun their beds, as they pray to their Lord, out of reverence and hope; and from Our provisions to them, they give. 17No soul knows what eye’s delight awaits them—a reward for what they used to do.
As-Sajdah 32:16–17

These verses describe believers rising from their beds at night to call on their Lord in fear and hope, and say that no one knows the joy hidden for them. They are often quoted to encourage night prayer.

And We appointed leaders from among them, guiding by Our command, as long as they persevered and were certain of Our communications.
As-Sajdah 32:24

Leadership among the Children of Israel is linked to two qualities, patience and certainty in Allah's signs, a pairing many scholars have reflected on.

When Surah As-Sajdah is recited

It is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim that the Prophet ﷺ used to recite Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Insan in the dawn (Fajr) prayer on Fridays, and many imams continue this today. A narration in Jami' at-Tirmidhi also reports that he would not sleep until he had recited As-Sajdah and Al-Mulk, so some Muslims recite both at night.

Yudabbiru alamra mina alssamai ila alardi thumma yaAAruju ilayhi fee yawmin kana miqdaruhu alfa sanatin mimma taAAuddoona

He regulates all affairs, from the heavens, to the earth. Then it ascends to Him on a Day the length of which is a thousand years by your count.

  6. 6

He who perfected everything He created, and originated the creation of man from clay.

  8. 8

Then made his reproduction from an extract of an insignificant fluid.

  9. 9

Thumma sawwahu wanafakha feehi min roohihi wajaAAala lakumu alssamAAa waalabsara waalafidata qaleelan ma tashkuroona

Then He proportioned him, and breathed into him of His spirit. Then He gave you the hearing, and the eyesight, and the brains—but rarely do you give thanks.

  10. 10

Waqaloo aitha dalalna fee alardi ainna lafee khalqin jadeedin bal hum biliqai rabbihim kafiroona

  11. 11

Qul yatawaffakum malaku almawti allathee wukkila bikum thumma ila rabbikum turjaAAoona

Say, “The angel of death put in charge of you will reclaim you. Then to your Lord you will be returned.”

  12. 12

Walaw tara ithi almujrimoona nakisoo ruoosihim AAinda rabbihim rabbana absarna wasamiAAna faarjiAAna naAAmal salihan inna mooqinoona

If only you could see the guilty, bowing their heads before their Lord: “Our Lord, we have seen and we have heard, so send us back, and we will act righteously; we are now convinced.”

  13. 13

Walaw shina laatayna kulla nafsin hudaha walakin haqqa alqawlu minnee laamlaanna jahannama mina aljinnati waalnnasi ajmaAAeena

Had We willed, We could have given every soul its guidance, but the declaration from Me will come true: “I will fill Hell with jinn and humans, all together.”

  14. 14

Fathooqoo bima naseetum liqaa yawmikum hatha inna naseenakum wathooqoo AAathaba alkhuldi bima kuntum taAAmaloona

So taste, because you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours; We have forgotten you; so taste the eternal torment for what you used to do.

  15. 15

Innama yuminu biayatina allatheena itha thukkiroo biha kharroo sujjadan wasabbahoo bihamdi rabbihim wahum la yastakbiroona

They believe in Our communications, those who, when reminded of them, fall down prostrate, and glorify their Lord with praise, and are not proud.

  16. 16

Tatajafa junoobuhum AAani almadajiAAi yadAAoona rabbahum khawfan watamaAAan wamimma razaqnahum yunfiqoona

Their sides shun their beds, as they pray to their Lord, out of reverence and hope; and from Our provisions to them, they give.

  17. 17

Fala taAAlamu nafsun ma okhfiya lahum min qurrati aAAyunin jazaan bima kanoo yaAAmaloona

No soul knows what eye’s delight awaits them—a reward for what they used to do.

  18. 18

Afaman kana muminan kaman kana fasiqan la yastawoona

Is someone who is faithful like someone who is a sinner? They are not equal.

  19. 19

Amma allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati falahum jannatu almawa nuzulan bima kanoo yaAAmaloona

As for those who believe and do righteous deeds, for them are the Gardens of Shelter—hospitality for what they used to do.

  20. 20

Waamma allatheena fasaqoo famawahumu alnnaru kullama aradoo an yakhrujoo minha oAAeedoo feeha waqeela lahum thooqoo AAathaba alnnari allathee kuntum bihi tukaththiboona

But as for those who transgressed, their shelter is the Fire. Every time they try to get out of it, they will be brought back into it, and it will be said to them, “Taste the suffering of the Fire which you used to deny.”

  21. 21

Walanutheeqannahum mina alAAathabi aladna doona alAAathabi alakbari laAAallahum yarjiAAoona

We will make them taste the lesser torment, prior to the greater torment, so that they may return.

  22. 22

Waman athlamu mimman thukkira biayati rabbihi thumma aAArada AAanha inna mina almujrimeena muntaqimoona

Who is more wrong than he, who, when reminded of his Lord’s revelations, turns away from them? We will certainly wreak vengeance upon the criminals.

  23. 23

Walaqad atayna moosa alkitaba fala takun fee miryatin min liqaihi wajaAAalnahu hudan libanee israeela

We gave Moses the Book; so do not be in doubt regarding His encounter; and We made it a guidance for the Children of Israel.

  24. 24

WajaAAalna minhum aimmatan yahdoona biamrina lamma sabaroo wakanoo biayatina yooqinoona

And We appointed leaders from among them, guiding by Our command, as long as they persevered and were certain of Our communications.

  25. 25

Inna rabbaka huwa yafsilu baynahum yawma alqiyamati feema kanoo feehi yakhtalifoona

Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection regarding everything they had disputed.

  26. 26

Awalam yahdi lahum kam ahlakna min qablihim mina alqurooni yamshoona fee masakinihim inna fee thalika laayatin afala yasmaAAoona

Is it not a lesson for them, how many generations We have destroyed before them, in whose habitations they walk? Surely in that are signs. Do they not hear?

  27. 27

Awalam yaraw anna nasooqu almaa ila alardi aljuruzi fanukhriju bihi zarAAan takulu minhu anAAamuhum waanfusuhum afala yubsiroona

Do they not see how We conduct the water to a dry land, and with it We produce vegetation, from which their livestock eat, and themselves? Do they not see?

  28. 28

Wayaqooloona mata hatha alfathu in kuntum sadiqeena

And they say, “When is this victory, if you are truthful?”

  29. 29

Qul yawma alfathi la yanfaAAu allatheena kafaroo eemanuhum wala hum yuntharoona

Say, “On the day of victory, the faith of those who disbelieved will be of no avail to them, and they will not be granted respite.”

  30. 30

    FaaAArid AAanhum waintathir innahum muntathiroona

So turn away from them, and wait. They too are waiting.
