What Surah Az-Zumar is about
Surah Az-Zumar is the 39th surah of the Quran, a Meccan surah of 75 verses. Its name, "The Troops" or "The Groups", comes from verses 71 and 73, where people are driven to Hell and led to Paradise in throngs. The key word running through it is sincerity: worship that belongs to Allah alone.
It opens by telling the Prophet ﷺ to serve Allah, devoting religion to Him (39:2), and rejects the excuse that idols are worshipped only to bring people closer to Allah (39:3). Verses 5-6 point to the night wrapping the day, the sun and moon on their courses, and the human being formed in the womb in three darknesses. Verse 8 describes the person who prays in hardship and forgets once relief comes.
Verse 9 asks whether the one who stands in prayer at night is equal to others, and whether those who know are equal to those who do not. Verse 10 reminds believers that Allah's earth is vast and that the patient are rewarded without measure. Verse 23 describes the Quran as the best of narrations, making the skin of the reverent shiver and then softening their hearts.
The middle of the surah offers parables, such as the servant owned by quarrelling partners compared with one who belongs to a single master (39:29), and reminds the Prophet ﷺ that he and they will all die (39:30). Verse 42 describes Allah taking souls at death and in sleep. Then comes 39:53, one of the most hopeful verses in the Quran, addressed to those who have wronged themselves: do not despair of Allah's mercy, for He forgives all sins.
The closing scene (39:67-75) describes the earth in Allah's grip on the Day of Resurrection, the Trumpet blown twice, the earth shining with its Lord's light, and every soul paid in full. The disbelievers are driven to Hell in groups, those who feared their Lord are welcomed into Paradise with greetings of peace, and the angels surround the Throne glorifying their Lord.
Main themes
Worship that is sincere
The surah repeatedly calls for religion devoted purely to Allah, in verses 2-3 and again in 11-14. It rejects the idea of intermediaries who are worshipped to bring one closer to Him. The Prophet ﷺ himself is told he must be the first to submit.
Verses 1–17Hardship, ease and forgetting
Twice the surah describes people who call on Allah in distress and then forget Him, or credit their own knowledge, once they are blessed (39:8 and 39:49). It presents ease as a test as much as hardship.
Verses 8–10The Quran that softens hearts
Verse 23 describes the effect of the Quran on those who revere Allah: first awe, then softening of the skin and heart toward His remembrance. Verses 27-28 add that it is a clear Arabic Quran with every kind of example.
Verses 18–29Do not despair of Allah's mercy
Verse 53 speaks directly to people who have gone too far against themselves and tells them that Allah forgives all sins. The verses that follow urge them to turn back to Allah now, before it is too late to wish for another chance.
Verses 53–59Led in groups
The final scene shows the Trumpet, the judgment, and people moving in throngs: one group to Hell, where its keepers ask whether messengers came to them, and another to Paradise, where they are greeted with peace. It ends with praise of the Lord of the Worlds.

Is he who worships devoutly during the watches of the night, prostrating himself and standing up, mindful of the Hereafter, and placing his hope in the mercy of his Lord? Say, “Are those who know and those who do not know equal?” Only those possessed of reason will remember.
It praises the person who prays through the night with fear and hope, and asks whether those who know are equal to those who do not.
Allah has sent down the best of narrations: A Scripture consistent and paired. The skins of those who reverence their Lord shiver from it, then their skins and their hearts soften up to the remembrance of Allah. Such is Allah’s guidance; He guides with it whomever He wills. But whomever Allah leaves astray, for him there is no guide.
A description of how the Quran affects a reverent listener: first a shiver, then a softening of heart toward the remembrance of Allah.
Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves: do not despair of Allah’s mercy, for Allah forgives all sins. He is indeed the Forgiver, the Clement.”
Often called one of the most hopeful verses in the Quran. It tells those who have wronged themselves never to lose hope in Allah's mercy, because He forgives all sins.
73And those who feared their Lord will be led to Paradise in throngs. Until, when they have reached it, and its gates are opened, its keepers will say to them, “Peace be upon you, you have been good, so enter it, to abide therein eternally.” 74And they will say, “Praise be to Allah, who has fulfilled His promise to us, and made us inherit the land, enjoying Paradise as we please.” How excellent is the reward of the workers.
Those who feared their Lord are welcomed at the open gates of Paradise with peace, and they praise Allah for fulfilling His promise.
When Surah Az-Zumar is recited
A narration in Sunan at-Tirmidhi, from Aisha, says the Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited Surah Bani Isra'il (Al-Isra) and Surah Az-Zumar. At-Tirmidhi graded it hasan gharib and al-Albani graded it authentic, though some other scholars have considered its chain weak.

Is not to Allah that sincere faith is due? As for those who take guardians besides Him, “We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allah.” Allah will judge between them regarding their differences. Allah does not guide the lying blasphemer.

If you disbelieve, Allah is Independent of you, yet He does not approve ingratitude on the part of His servants. And if you are thankful, He will approve that in you. No bearer of burden can bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return; and He will inform you of what you used to do. He is aware of what the hearts contain.

When some adversity touches the human being, he prays to his Lord, repenting to Him. But then, when He confers on him a grace of His, he forgets what he was praying for before, and he attributes rivals to Allah, in order to lead astray from His way. Say, “Enjoy your disbelief for a little while; you will be among the inmates of the Fire.”

Faman athlamu mimman kathaba AAala Allahi wakaththaba bialssidqi ith jaahu alaysa fee jahannama mathwan lilkafireena
Who is more evil than he who lies about Allah, and denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell room for the ungrateful?

Alaysa Allahu bikafin AAabdahu wayukhawwifoonaka biallatheena min doonihi waman yudlili Allahu fama lahu min hadin

- 37

Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that have not died during their sleep. He retains those for which He has decreed death, and He releases the others until a predetermined time. In that are signs for people who reflect.

If those who did wrong owned everything on earth, and the like of it with it, they would redeem themselves with it from the terrible suffering on the Day of Resurrection. But there will appear to them from Allah what they never anticipated.

Those who disbelieved will be driven to Hell in throngs. Until, when they have reached it, and its gates are opened, its keepers will say to them, “Did not messengers from among you come to you, reciting to you the revelations of your Lord, and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?” They will say, “Yes, but the verdict of punishment is justified against the disbelievers.”
