What Surah Maryam is about
Surah Maryam is the nineteenth surah of the Quran, a Meccan surah of 98 verses in the sixteenth juz. It is the only surah named after a woman, Mary (Maryam), the mother of Jesus (Isa), and it contains the Quran's fullest account of the birth of Jesus. Mercy runs through the whole surah. It opens by calling itself a mention of the mercy of Allah toward Zechariah (verse 2), and the divine name ar-Rahman, the Most Merciful, appears in it more often than in any other surah.
After the letters Kaf, Ha, Ya, Ayn, Sad (verse 1), the surah tells of Zechariah (Zakariyya), an old man with a barren wife, who calls on his Lord quietly and asks for an heir (verses 3-6). He is given the news of a son named John (Yahya), a name given to no one before, and as a sign he does not speak to people for three nights (verses 7-11). John is described as given wisdom while still young, tender, pure and kind to his parents, with peace on him the day he was born, the day he dies and the day he is raised (verses 12-15).
Mary's story follows (verses 16-34). She withdraws to a place to the east, an angel appears to her in human form and tells her she will have a pure son, and she asks how, when no man has touched her (verses 16-21). In the pains of labor by the trunk of a palm tree she wishes she had died before this; she is told not to grieve, that a stream has been placed beneath her, and to shake the palm so ripe dates fall (verses 23-26). When her people accuse her, she points to the infant, and Jesus speaks from the cradle, saying he is the servant of Allah and a prophet (verses 27-33). Verses 34-40 reject the idea that Allah takes a son.
The surah then mentions a line of prophets. Abraham (Ibrahim) pleads gently with his idol-worshipping father, calling him "O my father" four times, and when threatened he answers with peace and a promise to pray for him (verses 41-50). Moses, Ishmael (Ismail) and Idris follow briefly (verses 51-57), and verse 58 describes these prophets falling down in prostration and tears when the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them. Later generations neglected prayer, except those who repented (verses 59-60). The final section answers doubts about resurrection (verses 66-72), strongly rejects the claim that the Most Merciful has a son, so grave that the heavens nearly tear apart (verses 88-93), and promises that the Most Merciful will place love for those who believe and do good (verse 96).
Main themes
Zechariah's quiet prayer
Zechariah, old and with a barren wife, prays privately, saying he has never been disappointed in calling on his Lord. He is given John, who grows up wise, gentle and devoted to his parents. The passage is a model of hopeful prayer even when circumstances seem impossible.
Verses 2–15Mary and the birth of Jesus
Mary receives the news of a son, gives birth alone beneath a palm tree, and is comforted with water and dates. When her people accuse her, the newborn Jesus speaks in her defense, describing himself as Allah's servant and prophet, blessed and kind to his mother.
Verses 16–33Allah has no son
Right after the story of Jesus, the surah says plainly that it is not fitting for Allah to take a son; when He decides something, He only says to it, Be. The theme returns at the end, where the claim is called so monstrous that the heavens, earth and mountains almost break apart.
Verses 34–40Abraham and his father
Abraham speaks to his father with respect and concern, addressing him tenderly each time, and warns him against worshipping what cannot hear or see. Even when his father threatens to stone him, Abraham replies with peace and promises to ask forgiveness for him.
Verses 41–50The prophets who wept in prostration
Moses, Ishmael and Idris are each praised in a few words, and verse 58 gathers all these prophets together as people who fell down weeping when the verses of the Most Merciful were recited. The next verses contrast them with later generations who neglected prayer.
Verses 51–60Love from the Most Merciful
After describing the Day of Resurrection, when every being comes before the Most Merciful alone, verse 96 promises that He will give love to those who believe and do good. The surah ends by recalling how many earlier generations have vanished without a whisper.
Verses 93–98
Verses to know
He said, “My Lord, my bones have become feeble, and my hair is aflame with gray, and never, Lord, have I been disappointed in my prayer to You.
Zechariah describes his weak bones and white hair, then says he has never been disappointed in praying to his Lord, which makes this verse a favorite for people asking Allah for something that seems out of reach.
23The labor-pains came upon her, by the trunk of a palm-tree. She said, “I wish I had died before this, and been completely forgotten.” 24Whereupon he called her from beneath her: “Do not worry; your Lord has placed a stream beneath you. 25And shake the trunk of the palm-tree towards you, and it will drop ripe dates by you.” 26“So eat, and drink, and be consoled. And if you see any human, say, ‘I have vowed a fast to the Most Gracious, so I will not speak to any human today.’”
Mary's distress in labor and the comfort she receives, water beneath her and dates from the palm, are among the most human and tender scenes in the Quran.
30He said, “I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture, and made me a prophet. 31And has made me blessed wherever I may be; and has enjoined on me prayer and charity, so long as I live. 32And kind to my mother, and He did not make me a disobedient rebel. 33So peace is upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the Day I get resurrected alive.”
Jesus' words from the cradle describe him as the servant of Allah and a prophet, and end with a greeting of peace on the day of his birth, his death and his resurrection that echoes the words about John in verse 15.
Those who believe and do righteous deeds, the Most Merciful will give them love.
A short promise that the Most Merciful will create love for those who believe and do good deeds.
When Surah Maryam is recited
There is no well-established narration assigning Surah Maryam to a particular day or occasion. It holds a special place in early Islamic history: according to a narration from Umm Salamah in the Musnad of Ahmad, when the Muslims who had migrated to Abyssinia were questioned by the Negus about Jesus, Ja'far ibn Abi Talib recited the opening of Surah Maryam, and the king and his bishops wept. In Sahih al-Bukhari, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud names Maryam among the early surahs he valued most. Verse 58 is one of the verses of prostration.

Questions about Surah Maryam
How many verses are in Surah Maryam?
Surah Maryam has 98 verses. It is the nineteenth surah of the Quran and was revealed in Mecca.
What is Surah Maryam about?
It tells of the birth of John to the elderly Zechariah and the birth of Jesus to Mary, then recalls Abraham and other prophets. It rejects the idea that Allah has a son and emphasizes His mercy throughout.
Is Maryam the only surah named after a woman?
Yes. Mary is also the only woman mentioned by name in the Quran.
Why do people read Surah Maryam during pregnancy?
Some people read it because it describes Mary's labor and the comfort Allah gave her in verses 23-26. There is no authentic narration that sets this practice, but reading any part of the Quran for comfort is good.
