What Surah Quraysh is about

Surah Quraysh is named after the tribe that controlled Mecca and to which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ belonged. Verses 1 and 2 refer to the security and familiarity that Quraysh enjoyed, especially on their winter and summer trading trips. Commentators explain that the winter caravan usually went south to Yemen and the summer caravan north to Syria, and that the tribe's role as guardians of the Kaaba gave them safe passage.

Verse 3 draws the conclusion: let them worship the Lord of this House, the Kaaba. Verse 4 describes Him as the One who fed them against hunger and made them safe from fear. The surah is closely linked to Al-Fil (105) before it, and some early scholars even read the two together, since the protection of the Kaaba from Abraha's army preserved the safety that Quraysh relied on.

Main themes

  1. Security and trade

The surah describes the safety and routine of the Quraysh caravans. Their prosperity depended on a security they took for granted.

    Verses 1–2
  2. Gratitude through worship

Verse 3 asks Quraysh to respond to that security by worshipping the Lord of the Kaaba. Verse 4 names two basic needs Allah met for them: food and safety.

    Verses 3–4

Verses to know

Who has fed them against hunger, and has secured them against fear.
Quraysh 106:4

Names freedom from hunger and from fear as two of the most basic blessings. Many readers find it a simple prompt to gratitude for daily necessities.
