What Surah Al-Hadid is about
Al-Hadid is the 57th surah of the Quran and closes the 27th juz. It was revealed in Medina, and it is the first of a group of surahs that open by saying that everything in the heavens and the earth glorifies Allah. Its name comes from verse 25, which mentions iron alongside the scripture and the balance.
The surah opens with one of the richest descriptions of Allah in the Quran. Verses 1 to 6 describe Him as the First and the Last, the Outer and the Inner, the One who knows what goes into the earth and what rises to the sky, and who is with people wherever they are. From there it turns to the believers directly. Verses 7 to 11 ask them to believe fully and to spend from wealth that is only theirs on trust, and verse 10 notes that those who gave and struggled before the conquest hold a higher rank, while both groups are promised good.
Verses 12 to 15 describe the Day when believers walk with light running ahead of them, and the hypocrites beg to borrow some of it before a wall with a door is set between them. Verse 16 then asks, gently, whether the time has come for believers' hearts to soften at Allah's remembrance, and warns against the hardening that comes with long neglect. Verse 20 compares worldly life to rain that brings up a crop which delights for a while and then yellows and crumbles, and verse 21 urges a race toward forgiveness instead. Verses 22 and 23 teach that every hardship is already known to Allah, so that people neither despair over loss nor become arrogant over gain. The surah ends with the messengers, the balance and iron in verse 25, the line of Noah (Nuh), Abraham (Ibrahim) and Jesus (Isa) in verses 26 and 27, and a promise of double mercy and light for those who believe in verse 28.
Main themes
Who Allah is
The opening verses gather many of Allah's attributes in a short space: His glorification by all creation, His kingdom, His creating the heavens and earth, and His knowledge of what hearts contain. Verse 4 adds that He is with people wherever they may be and sees what they do.
Verses 1–6Giving as a loan to Allah
The surah repeatedly ties faith to spending. Wealth is described as something people inherit and pass on, and verse 11 asks who will lend Allah a good loan that He will multiply. Verse 18 returns to the same image for charitable men and women.
Verses 7–11Light on the Day of Judgment
Believers are pictured with their light shining before them and to their right. The hypocrites ask to be allowed some of it and are told to go back and look for light behind them, and a wall divides mercy on one side from punishment on the other.
Verses 12–15Softening the heart and seeing the world clearly
Verse 16 invites believers to let their hearts humble themselves to Allah's remembrance before they harden. Verse 20 lists play, distraction, show, boasting and competition in wealth and children, and compares it all to vegetation that withers.
Verses 16–21Messengers, justice and iron
Verse 25 says messengers were sent with clear proofs, the scripture and the balance so that people would uphold justice, and that iron was sent down with great strength and many uses. The following verses trace prophethood through the descendants of Noah and Abraham to Jesus.
Verses 25–27
Verses to know
He is the First and the Last, and the Outer and the Inner, and He has knowledge of all things.
This short verse names Allah as the First, the Last, the Outer and the Inner. The Prophet ﷺ used these same names in a supplication before sleep reported in Sahih Muslim.
Is it not time for those who believe to surrender their hearts to the remembrance of Allah, and to the truth that has come down, and not be like those who were given the Book previously, but time became prolonged for them, so their hearts hardened, and many of them are sinners?
A gentle but direct question about whether hearts have softened yet. Abdullah ibn Mas'ud is reported in Sahih Muslim to have said that only four years passed between his group accepting Islam and being addressed by this verse.
Know that the worldly life is only play, and distraction, and glitter, and boasting among you, and rivalry in wealth and children. It is like a rainfall that produces plants, and delights the disbelievers. But then it withers, and you see it yellowing, and then it becomes debris. While in the Hereafter there is severe agony, and forgiveness from Allah, and acceptance. The life of this world is nothing but enjoyment of vanity.
One of the Quran's clearest pictures of worldly life, comparing its pleasures and rivalries to a crop that flourishes and then turns yellow and breaks apart.
22No calamity occurs on earth, or in your souls, but it is in a Book, even before We make it happen. That is easy for Allah. 23That you may not sorrow over what eludes you, nor exult over what He has given you. Allah does not love the proud snob.
These verses explain that every calamity is already written, and give the reason: so that people do not grieve too much over what they miss or become boastful over what they receive.

And why is it that you do not spend in the cause of Allah, when to Allah belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth? Not equal among you are those who contributed before the conquest, and fought. Those are higher in rank than those who contributed afterwards, and fought. But Allah promises both a good reward. Allah is Well-Experienced in what you do.

And We sent down iron, in which is violent force, and benefits for humanity. That Allah may know who supports Him and His messengers invisibly. Allah is Strong and Powerful.

Walaqad arsalna noohan waibraheema wajaAAalna fee thurriyyatihima alnnubuwwata waalkitaba faminhum muhtadin wakatheerun minhum fasiqoona
We sent Noah and Abraham, and established in their line prophethood and the Scripture. Some of them are guided, but many of them are sinners.

Thumma qaffayna AAala atharihim birusulina waqaffayna biAAeesa ibni maryama waataynahu alinjeela wajaAAalna fee quloobi allatheena ittabaAAoohu rafatan warahmatan warahbaniyyatan ibtadaAAooha ma katabnaha AAalayhim illa ibtighaa ridwani Allahi fama raAAawha haqqa riAAayatiha faatayna allatheena amanoo minhum ajrahum wakatheerun minhum fasiqoona
Then We sent in their wake Our messengers, and followed up with Jesus son of Mary, and We gave him the Gospel, and instilled in the hearts of those who followed him compassion and mercy. But as for the monasticism which they invented—We did not ordain it for them—only to seek Allah’s approval. But they did not observe it with its due observance. So We gave those of them who believed their reward, but many of them are sinful.

O you who believe! Fear Allah, and believe in His Messenger: He will give you a double portion of His mercy, and will give you a light by which you walk, and will forgive you. Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

That the People of the Book may know that they have no power whatsoever over Allah’s grace, and that all grace is in Allah’s hand; He gives it to whomever He wills. Allah is Possessor of Great Grace.
