What Surah Al-Mujadila is about
Al-Mujadila is the 58th surah of the Quran and opens the 28th juz. It was revealed in Medina and has 22 verses. Its name, often translated as The Pleading Woman or She Who Disputed, comes from its first verse, which says that Allah heard the woman who argued with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about her husband and took her complaint to Allah. Every one of its verses mentions the name Allah in the Arabic text.
The surah moves in three steps. Verses 1 to 4 respond to the woman's case. Her husband had declared her to be like his mother, a pre-Islamic practice called zihar that left a wife neither divorced nor treated as a wife. Verse 2 says plainly that wives are not mothers and calls the statement false, and verses 3 and 4 set out the expiation a man must make before returning to his wife.
Verses 5 to 13 turn to life in the community. Verse 7 says that whenever three people speak in secret Allah is the fourth, and whenever five do He is the sixth. Verses 8 to 10 criticize secret plotting and tell believers to keep their private talk to goodness and piety. Verse 11 asks people to make room for one another in gatherings and says Allah raises those who believe and those given knowledge by degrees, and verses 12 and 13 deal with offering charity before a private meeting with the Prophet ﷺ and then ease that request.
The last section, verses 14 to 22, describes people who swore false oaths and sided with those hostile to the believers. It ends by contrasting the party of Satan in verse 19 with the party of Allah in verse 22, those whose faith is written on their hearts and with whom Allah is pleased.
Main themes
Allah hears a woman's complaint
The surah begins with Allah hearing an ordinary woman's argument about her marriage. Verse 2 rejects the old practice of a husband declaring his wife to be like his mother, and verses 3 and 4 make him pay an expiation before he may return to her.
Verses 1–4Nothing said in secret is hidden
Verse 7 describes Allah's knowledge of every private conversation, however many people are in it. The verses after it warn against whispering for harm and tell believers that secret talk should be for good, since plotting is from Satan and cannot hurt them without Allah's permission.
Verses 7–10Manners in gatherings
Verse 11 asks believers to make space for others when asked and to rise when asked to leave. It links this small courtesy to a promise that Allah raises the people of faith and knowledge in rank.
Verses 11–13False oaths and true loyalty
The closing verses describe people who used oaths as a shield while siding against the believers. Verse 22 describes those whose love for Allah and His Messenger comes first, strengthened by a spirit from Him, and calls them the party of Allah.
Verses 14–22
Verses to know
Allah has heard the statement of her who argued with you concerning her husband, as she complained to Allah. Allah heard your conversation. Allah is Hearing and Seeing.
The surah takes its name from this verse. It shows Allah hearing one woman's private complaint and answering it with revelation.
Do you not realize that Allah knows everything in the heavens and everything on earth? There is no secret counsel between three, but He is their fourth; nor between five, but He is their sixth; nor less than that, nor more, but He is with them wherever they may be. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, He will inform them of what they did. Allah has knowledge of everything.
A vivid description of Allah's nearness: He is present in every private conversation, whether between three people, five, or any number.
O you who believe! When you are told to make room in your gatherings, make room; Allah will make room for you. And when you are told to disperse, disperse. Allah elevates those among you who believe, and those given knowledge, many steps. Allah is Aware of what you do.
This verse connects a simple courtesy, making room for others, with a lasting principle that Allah raises believers and people of knowledge by degrees.
You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day, loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their parents, or their children, or their siblings, or their close relatives. These—He has inscribed faith in their hearts, and has supported them with a spirit from Him. And He will admit them into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will dwell forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. These are the partisans of Allah. Indeed, it is Allah’s partisans who are the successful.
The closing verse describes the people Allah is pleased with and who are pleased with Him, and names them the party of Allah, the ones who succeed.

Those of you who estrange their wives by equating them with their mothers—they are not their mothers. Their mothers are none else but those who gave birth to them. What they say is evil, and a blatant lie. But Allah is Pardoning and Forgiving.

Have you noted those who were prohibited from conspiring secretly, but then reverted to what they were prohibited from? They conspire to commit sin, and aggression, and defiance of the Messenger. And when they come to you, they greet you with a greeting that Allah never greeted you with. And they say within themselves, “Why does Allah not punish us for what we say?” Hell is enough for them. They will roast in it. What a miserable destiny!

O you who believe! When you converse secretly, do not converse in sin, and aggression, and disobedience of the Messenger; but converse in virtue and piety; and fear Allah, to whom you will be gathered.
- 10

Conspiracies are from Satan, that he may dishearten those who believe; but he will not harm them in the least, except by leave of Allah. So let the believers put their trust in Allah.
- 11

O you who believe! When you converse privately with the Messenger, offer something in charity before your conversation. That is better for you, and purer. But if you do not find the means—Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
- 13

Are you reluctant to offer charity before your conversation? If you do not do so, and Allah pardons you, then perform the prayer, and give alms, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah is Aware of what you do.
- 14
