What Surah Al-Hajj is about
Al-Hajj, The Pilgrimage, is the 22nd surah of the Quran and the last surah of juz 17. It takes its name from verses 26 to 37, which describe the origin and rites of the pilgrimage to Mecca. Classical scholars disagreed about whether it was revealed in Mecca or Medina, and many held that it contains verses from both periods. The surahs list used on this site classes it as Medinan.
The surah opens with one of the most frightening scenes in the Quran. Verses 1 and 2 describe the quake of the Hour, when nursing mothers forget their infants and people stagger as if drunk. Verse 5 answers doubts about resurrection by tracing human development from dust to a drop, a clot and a lump of flesh, and by pointing to dry earth that stirs and grows when rain falls. Verse 11 describes a person who worships Allah only from the edge, staying while things go well and turning away at the first trial. Verse 18 then lists everything that bows to Allah, from the sun and stars to the trees and animals.
The central section returns to Abraham (Ibrahim). Verse 26 says Allah showed him the place of the House and told him to purify it, and verse 27 tells him to announce the pilgrimage so that people come on foot and from every distant road. Verses 28 to 37 speak of the days of remembrance, the animal offerings and feeding the poor, and verse 37 makes the point that neither the meat nor the blood reaches Allah, only the devotion behind it. Verses 39 and 40 give the persecuted believers permission to defend themselves, noting that without this monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques would be destroyed. Near the end, verse 73 offers the parable of the fly, and verses 77 and 78 call the believers to bow, prostrate and strive, reminding them that this is the faith of their father Abraham and that they have been named Muslims.
Main themes
The quake of the Hour
The surah begins by calling people to be mindful of Allah because the earthquake of the Hour will be overwhelming. It describes the shock so vividly that people seem drunk though they are not.
Verses 1–2Signs of resurrection
Doubters are asked to consider their own creation in stages inside the womb and their growth to old age, and then the barren earth coming back to life after rain. Both are offered as evidence that bringing the dead back is within Allah's power.
Verses 5–7Faith on the edge
Verse 11 describes someone whose worship depends on things going well, who turns back as soon as hardship comes and so loses both this world and the next. Verses 12 and 13 note that what such a person turns to can neither help nor harm them.
Verses 11–13Abraham and the pilgrimage
Allah shows Abraham the site of the House, tells him to keep it pure for those who circle it and pray, and to call humanity to pilgrimage. The verses then describe remembrance on the appointed days, the offerings, feeding the poor and circling the Ancient House.
Verses 26–37Permission to defend
Verses 39 to 41 give permission to those who were attacked and driven from their homes simply for saying their Lord is Allah. They describe the believers who, once given power, establish prayer, give charity and promote what is right.
Verses 39–41Weakness of false gods and the call to strive
The parable of the fly shows that everything worshiped besides Allah could not create even a fly or take back what a fly steals from them. The surah closes by telling believers to bow, prostrate, do good and strive, holding fast to Allah as their Protector.
Verses 73–78
Verses to know
And announce the pilgrimage to humanity. They will come to you on foot, and on every transport. They will come from every distant point.
This is the verse in which Abraham is told to announce the pilgrimage, and it describes people coming on foot and by every kind of transport from far away. It is often recalled in connection with the Hajj today.
Neither their flesh, nor their blood, ever reaches Allah. What reaches Him is the righteousness from you. Thus He subdued them to you, that you may glorify Allah for guiding you. And give good news to the charitable.
It explains the meaning of the animal sacrifice: what reaches Allah is not the meat or blood but the person's devotion. It is commonly cited around Eid al-Adha.
Have they not journeyed in the land, and had minds to reason with, or ears to listen with? It is not the eyes that go blind, but it is the hearts, within the chests, that go blind.
This verse says that it is not the eyes that go blind but the hearts within the chests, a line often quoted when speaking about spiritual blindness.
O people! A parable is presented, so listen to it: Those you invoke besides Allah will never create a fly, even if they banded together for that purpose. And if the fly steals anything from them, they cannot recover it from it. Weak are the pursuer and the pursued.
The parable of the fly is one of the Quran's most memorable images, showing in a single picture how powerless false gods are.
When Surah Al-Hajj is recited
Verse 18 of this surah is a verse of prostration, and many Muslims prostrate when reciting or hearing it. Some schools of law also count verse 77 as a second place of prostration while others do not, so Surah Al-Hajj is known for having two such verses according to part of the scholarly tradition.

O people! If you are in doubt about the Resurrection—We created you from dust, then from a small drop, then from a clinging clot, then from a lump of flesh, partly developed and partly undeveloped. In order to clarify things for you. And We settle in the wombs whatever We will for a designated term, and then We bring you out as infants, until you reach your full strength. And some of you will pass away, and some of you will be returned to the vilest age, so that he may not know, after having known. And you see the earth still; but when We send down water on it, it vibrates, and swells, and grows all kinds of lovely pairs.

Do you not realize that to Allah prostrates everyone in the heavens and everyone on earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the mountains, and the trees, and the animals, and many of the people? But many are justly deserving of punishment. Whomever Allah shames, there is none to honor him. Allah does whatever He wills.

Then let them perform their acts of cleansing, and fulfill their vows, and circle around the Ancient House.

All that. Whoever venerates the sanctities of Allah—it is good for him with his Lord. All livestock are permitted to you, except what is recited to you. So stay away from the abomination of idols, and stay away from perjury.
- 31
Hunafaa lillahi ghayra mushrikeena bihi waman yushrik biAllahi fakaannama kharra mina alssamai fatakhtafuhu alttayru aw tahwee bihi alrreehu fee makanin saheeqin
Being true to Allah, without associating anything with Him. Whoever associates anything with Allah—it is as though he has fallen from the sky, and is snatched by the birds, or is swept away by the wind to a distant abyss.
- 32
Thalika waman yuAAaththim shaAAaira Allahi fainnaha min taqwa alquloobi
So it is. Whoever venerates the sacraments of Allah—it is from the piety of the hearts.
- 33

Walikulli ommatin jaAAalna mansakan liyathkuroo isma Allahi AAala ma razaqahum min baheemati alanAAami failahukum ilahun wahidun falahu aslimoo wabashshiri almukhbiteena
We have appointed a rite for every nation, that they may commemorate Allah’s name over the livestock He has provided for them. Your god is One God, so to Him submit, and announce good news to the humble.
- 35
Allatheena itha thukira Allahu wajilat quloobuhum waalssabireena AAala ma asabahum waalmuqeemee alssalati wamimma razaqnahum yunfiqoona
Those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned, and those who endure what has befallen them, and those who perform the prayer and spend from what We have provided for them.
- 36

We have made the animal offerings emblems of Allah for you. In them is goodness for you. So pronounce Allah’s name upon them as they line up. Then, when they have fallen on their sides, eat of them and feed the contented and the beggar. Thus We have subjected them to you, that you may be thankful.
- 37
Lan yanala Allaha luhoomuha wala dimaoha walakin yanaluhu alttaqwa minkum kathalika sakhkharaha lakum litukabbiroo Allaha AAala ma hadakum wabashshiri almuhsineena
Neither their flesh, nor their blood, ever reaches Allah. What reaches Him is the righteousness from you. Thus He subdued them to you, that you may glorify Allah for guiding you. And give good news to the charitable.
- 38
Inna Allaha yudafiAAu AAani allatheena amanoo inna Allaha la yuhibbu kulla khawwanin kafoorin
Allah defends those who believe. Allah does not love any ungrateful traitor.

Those who were unjustly evicted from their homes, merely for saying, “Our Lord is Allah.” Were it not that Allah repels people by means of others: monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques—where the name of Allah is mentioned much—would have been demolished. Allah supports whoever supports Him. Allah is Strong and Mighty.
- 41

Those who, when We empower them in the land, observe the prayer, and give regular charity, and command what is right, and forbid what is wrong. To Allah belongs the outcome of events.
- 42

If they deny you—before them the people of Noah, and Aad, and Thamood also denied.
- 43
Waqawmu ibraheema waqawmu lootin
And the people of Abraham, and the people of Lot.
- 44
Waashabu madyana wakuththiba moosa faamlaytu lilkafireena thumma akhathtuhum fakayfa kana nakeeri
And the inhabitants of Midian. And Moses was denied. Then I reprieved those who disbelieved, but then I seized them. So how was My rejection?
- 45
Fakaayyin min qaryatin ahlaknaha wahiya thalimatun fahiya khawiyatun AAala AAurooshiha wabirin muAAattalatin waqasrin masheedin
How many a town have We destroyed while it was doing wrong? They lie in ruins; with stilled wells, and lofty mansions.
- 46
Afalam yaseeroo fee alardi fatakoona lahum quloobun yaAAqiloona biha aw athanun yasmaAAoona biha fainnaha la taAAma alabsaru walakin taAAma alquloobu allatee fee alssudoori
Have they not journeyed in the land, and had minds to reason with, or ears to listen with? It is not the eyes that go blind, but it is the hearts, within the chests, that go blind.
- 47
WayastaAAjiloonaka bialAAathabi walan yukhlifa Allahu waAAdahu wainna yawman AAinda rabbika kaalfi sanatin mimma taAAuddoona
And they ask you to hasten the punishment. But Allah never breaks His promise. A day with your Lord is like a thousand years of your count.
- 48
Wakaayyin min qaryatin amlaytu laha wahiya thalimatun thumma akhathtuha wailayya almaseeru
How many a town have I reprieved, although it was unjust? Then I seized it. To Me is the destination.

Waallatheena saAAaw fee ayatina muAAajizeena olaika ashabu aljaheemi
But those who strive against Our revelations—these are the inmates of Hell.
- 52

We never sent a messenger before you, or a prophet, but when he had a desire Satan interfered in his wishes. But Allah nullifies what Satan interjects, and Allah affirms His revelations. Allah is Omniscient and Wise.
- 53

In order to make Satan’s suggestions a trial for those whose hearts are diseased, and those whose hearts are hardened. The wrongdoers are in profound discord.
- 54

And so that those endowed with knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord, and so believe in it, and their hearts soften to it. Allah guides those who believe to a straight path.
- 55

Those who emigrate in Allah’s cause, then get killed, or die, Allah will provide them with fine provisions. Allah is the Best of providers.
- 59

Thalika waman AAaqaba bimithli ma AAooqiba bihi thumma bughiya AAalayhi layansurannahu Allahu inna Allaha laAAafuwwun ghafoorun
That is so! Whoever retaliates similarly to the affliction he was made to suffer, and then he is wronged again, Allah will definitely assist him. Allah is Pardoning and Forgiving.
- 61
Thalika bianna Allaha yooliju allayla fee alnnahari wayooliju alnnahara fee allayli waanna Allaha sameeAAun baseerun

- 63

Do you not see that Allah made everything on earth subservient to you? How the ships sail at sea by His command? That He holds up the sky lest it falls on earth—except by His permission? Allah is Gracious towards the people, Most Merciful.
- 66
Wahuwa allathee ahyakum thumma yumeetukum thumma yuhyeekum inna alinsana lakafoorun
And it is He who gives you life, then makes you die, then revives you. The human being is unappreciative.

Yet they worship, besides Allah, things for which He sent down no warrant, and what they have no knowledge of. There is no savior for the transgressors.
- 72

And when Our clear Verses are recited to them, you will recognize disgust on the faces of those who disbelieve. They nearly assault those who recite to them Our Verses. Say, “Shall I inform you of something worse than that? The Fire! Allah has promised it to those who disbelieve. And what a wretched outcome!”

O people! A parable is presented, so listen to it: Those you invoke besides Allah will never create a fly, even if they banded together for that purpose. And if the fly steals anything from them, they cannot recover it from it. Weak are the pursuer and the pursued.

And strive for Allah, with the striving due to Him. He has chosen you, and has not burdened you in religion—the faith of your father Abraham. It is he who named you Muslims before, and in this. So that the Messenger may be a witness over you, and you may be witnesses over the people. So pray regularly, and give regular charity, and cleave to Allah. He is your Protector. What an excellent Protector, and what an excellent Helper.
