What Surah Al-Mu'minun is about
Al-Mu'minun, The Believers, is the 23rd surah of the Quran and the first surah of juz 18. It is a Meccan surah and takes its name from its very first verse, which declares that the believers have succeeded.
Verses 1 to 11 describe who those believers are: humble in prayer, turning away from idle talk, giving charity, guarding their chastity, keeping their trusts and promises, and protecting their prayers. They are the ones who will inherit Paradise. Verses 12 to 16 then trace the stages of human creation, from clay to a drop, a clot, a lump, bones clothed with flesh, and finally a new creation, followed by death and resurrection. Verses 17 to 22 point to the sky, rain, gardens, the olive tree of Sinai and livestock as gifts from Allah.
From verse 23 the surah tells of messengers who were rejected. Noah (Nuh) is called a madman and told to build the Ark (23 to 30). An unnamed messenger after him is dismissed as a man who eats and drinks like everyone else (31 to 41). Moses (Musa) and Aaron (Harun) are rejected by Pharaoh (45 to 48), and Mary's son and his mother are given refuge (50). Verse 52 says the prophets formed one community, though people later split into sects.
The last part contrasts those who give while their hearts tremble, knowing they will return to their Lord (57 to 61), with those who mock the message. It ends at the moment of death and beyond: a person asks to be sent back to do good (99 to 100), the scales are set up (102 to 103), and the people of the Fire are asked how long they stayed on earth (112 to 114). Verse 115 asks whether people thought they were created for no purpose, and the surah closes with a short prayer for forgiveness and mercy (118).
Main themes
The qualities of the believers
The surah opens with a portrait of the believers who succeed, built around humility in prayer, avoiding idle talk, charity, chastity, trustworthiness and care for the prayers. It begins and ends that list with prayer, and promises these people Paradise.
Verses 1–11Stages of creation
The development of a human being is described step by step, from an extract of clay to a fully formed creature, followed by the reminder that each person will die and be raised again. Verse 14 ends with praise of Allah as the best of creators.
Verses 12–22Messengers rejected for being human
Noah, an unnamed messenger and Moses are each rejected with a similar complaint: that they are only human beings like everyone else. Each time the messenger prays for help and the deniers are destroyed.
Verses 23–50Giving with a trembling heart
Verses 57 to 61 describe believers who fear their Lord, avoid associating partners with Him, and give what they give while their hearts are anxious about meeting Him. Verse 62 adds that Allah never burdens a soul beyond its capacity.
Verses 57–62Death and the request to return
When death comes to a person who neglected their life, they ask to be sent back to make amends, but there is a barrier until resurrection. On the Day of Judgment the people of the Fire are reminded that they mocked those who prayed for forgiveness.
Verses 99–111Not created without purpose
The people of the Fire think they stayed on earth for only a day or part of a day. Allah asks whether people thought they were created in vain and would not return to Him, and the surah closes with a prayer for forgiveness and mercy.
Verses 112–118
Verses to know
قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ﴿١﴾ ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ فِي صَلَاتِهِمۡ خَٰشِعُونَ ﴿٢﴾
1Successful are the believers. 2Those who are humble in their prayers.
The opening verses tie success directly to faith and humility in prayer, and they introduce the list of qualities that gives the surah its name.
Then We developed the seed into a clot. Then We developed the clot into a lump. Then We developed the lump into bones. Then We clothed the bones with flesh. Then We produced it into another creature. Most Blessed is Allah, the Best of creators.
This verse gives one of the Quran's most detailed descriptions of the stages of human development, ending with praise of Allah as the best of creators.
أَفَحَسِبۡتُمۡ أَنَّمَا خَلَقۡنَٰكُمۡ عَبَثٗا وَأَنَّكُمۡ إِلَيۡنَا لَا تُرۡجَعُونَ ﴿١١٥﴾
Did you think that We created you in vain, and that to Us you will not be returned?”
Allah asks whether people thought they were created for nothing and would not be returned to Him, a question that sums up the surah's argument.
وَقُل رَّبِّ ٱغۡفِرۡ وَٱرۡحَمۡ وَأَنتَ خَيۡرُ ٱلرَّـٰحِمِينَ ﴿١١٨﴾
And say, “My Lord, forgive and have mercy, for You are the Best of the merciful.”
The surah ends with a short, complete prayer asking Allah for forgiveness and mercy, which many Muslims memorize and use in their own supplications.
