What Surah As-Saffat is about
Surah As-Saffat is the 37th surah of the Quran, a Meccan surah of 182 verses. Its name comes from its first verse, which swears by those standing in ranks, usually understood as the angels. Its verses are short and rhythmic, and it moves quickly between creation, the Hereafter and the stories of earlier prophets.
It opens with oaths and a plain statement in verse 4 that Allah is One, then describes the lower heaven adorned with stars and guarded against devils who try to listen in (37:6-10). From verse 11 it answers those who mock the idea of being raised after becoming dust and bones. The Day of Judgment arrives with a single blast (37:19), and the misguided and those who misled them blame one another (37:27-33).
Verses 40-61 turn to Allah's sincere servants in the Gardens of Bliss. One of them remembers a friend who scoffed at the resurrection, looks down, and sees him in Hell, and thanks his Lord for having been saved (37:51-57). This is set against the Tree of Zaqqum, described as growing from the bottom of Hell (37:62-68).
The longest section, verses 75-148, tells of Noah, Abraham, Moses and Aaron, Elijah (Ilyas), Lot and Jonah (Yunus). Several of these accounts end with the same pattern: a greeting of peace upon the prophet, a statement that this is how Allah rewards those who do good, and that he was one of Allah's believing servants. Abraham's story includes his breaking of the idols (37:91-96), his dream of sacrificing his son and their shared submission (37:102-107), and then the good news of Isaac (37:112).
The final part (37:149-166) rejects the claim that the angels are Allah's daughters, and the angels themselves say each of them has an assigned place. The surah closes by promising that the messengers will be helped (37:171-173) and ends with three verses glorifying Allah, sending peace upon the messengers, and praising the Lord of the Worlds (37:180-182).
Main themes
One Lord of the heavens and the earth
After oaths by those in ranks, the surah states that Allah is One and Lord of everything between the heavens and the earth. The stars adorn the nearest sky, and devils are driven away from it. This sets up the surah's later argument against worshipping others besides Him.
Verses 1–10Resurrection and mutual blame
Those who mocked the idea of being raised from dust find themselves gathered on the Day of Separation. Followers and leaders turn on each other, each blaming the other, and the surah notes that they share the same punishment.
Verses 16–39The friend who almost ruined him
In Paradise, a believer recalls a companion who used to doubt the resurrection. He sees him in the depths of Hell and says he came close to being ruined by him, but for his Lord's grace. It is a quiet reminder about the influence of the people around us.
Verses 50–61Abraham's test and the great sacrifice
Abraham (Ibrahim) leaves his people after they try to burn him, and asks for a righteous child. When the boy is old enough, Abraham tells him of a dream in which he sacrifices him, and the son tells him to do as commanded. Allah calls out that the vision has been fulfilled and ransoms the son with a great sacrifice.
Verses 99–113Peace upon the prophets
Noah, Abraham, Moses and Aaron, and Elijah each receive a greeting of peace that echoes through the surah, followed by the same words of reward. Jonah is rescued from the fish because he was among those who glorified Allah, and his people of a hundred thousand or more come to believe.
Verses 75–148The messengers will be helped
The surah ends by answering false claims about the angels and the jinn, and by affirming that Allah's word to His messengers has already gone out: they will be supported. It closes with glorification of Allah, peace on the messengers, and praise.
Verses 149–182
Verses to know
56He will say, “By Allah, you almost ruined me. 57Were it not for the grace of my Lord, I would have been among the arraigned.”
A believer in Paradise speaks to a companion who nearly led him astray, and credits his own safety to his Lord's grace. Few passages make the weight of friendship so vivid.
Then, when he was old enough to accompany him, he said, “O my son, I see in a dream that I am sacrificing you; see what you think.” He said, “O my father, do as you are commanded; you will find me, Allah willing, one of the steadfast.”
Abraham consults his son about the dream instead of simply acting, and the son answers with trust and patience. The verse is central to the story Muslims remember at Eid al-Adha.
143Had he not been one of those who praised. 144He would have stayed in its belly until the Day they are raised.
Jonah is saved from the belly of the fish because he was one of those who glorified Allah, which many readers take as an encouragement to remember Allah in good times and bad.
180Exalted be your Lord, the Lord of Glory, beyond their allegations. 181And peace be upon the messengers. 182And praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.
The surah ends with glorification, peace upon the messengers, and praise of the Lord of the Worlds. These closing verses are often recited at the end of gatherings and supplications.
When Surah As-Saffat is recited
There is no widely established special practice of reciting Surah As-Saffat at a particular time. Its account of Abraham and his son (37:99-113) is commonly read and discussed around Eid al-Adha, since the sacrifice of that festival recalls this story, and its closing three verses (37:180-182) are often recited to end a gathering or a supplication.

Questions about Surah As-Saffat
How many verses are in Surah As-Saffat?
Surah As-Saffat has 182 verses. It is the 37th surah of the Quran and was revealed in Mecca.
What does As-Saffat mean?
As-Saffat means "those who set the ranks" or "those standing in rows". The name comes from the first verse, which is usually understood to refer to the angels standing in ordered ranks.
Which son of Abraham is in Surah As-Saffat?
The surah does not name the son in the sacrifice story (37:101-107). Because the good news of Isaac comes afterwards in verse 112, most Muslim scholars understand the son to be Ishmael (Ismail), though some early scholars held a different view.
Which prophets are mentioned in Surah As-Saffat?
The surah tells of Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Moses and Aaron, Elijah, Lot and Jonah, in that order, between verses 75 and 148.
