What Surah Ya-Sin is about
Ya-Sin is the 36th surah of the Quran and one of the most widely recited. It was revealed in Mecca and has 83 verses. Verses 1 to 27 are in juz 22 and verses 28 to 83 are in juz 23. It takes its name from the two Arabic letters, Ya and Sin, that open it. Like the other disconnected letters at the start of some surahs, their meaning is something scholars have discussed without agreement, and many simply say that Allah knows best.
After the opening letters, Allah swears by the wise Quran that Muhammad ﷺ is one of the messengers, on a straight path (2 to 4), sent to warn a people whose forefathers had not been warned (6). Verses 7 to 10 describe those who have closed themselves off so completely that warning makes no difference, while verse 11 says the warning benefits whoever follows the reminder and fears the Most Merciful unseen. Verse 12 adds that Allah records not only what people do but the traces they leave behind.
Verses 13 to 32 tell a parable of a town to which two messengers were sent, then a third. The townspeople call them ordinary humans, see them as a bad omen and threaten to stone them. A man comes running from the far end of the city, urges his people to follow messengers who ask for no payment (20 to 21), and declares his own faith (22 to 25). He is told to enter Paradise, and his first wish is that his people could know how his Lord forgave and honored him (26 to 27). The town is then silenced by a single cry (29).
Verses 33 to 44 turn to signs in creation: dead land brought to life with grain, palms and vines (33 to 35), pairs in everything (36), night stripped from day (37), the sun running to its resting place, the moon passing through phases like an old palm stalk, and each body floating in its own orbit (38 to 40), and ships carrying people across the sea (41 to 44).
The rest of the surah moves to the Last Day. A single blast comes while people are arguing (49), the trumpet is blown, and they rise from their graves asking who woke them (51 to 52). The people of Paradise are busy and joyful, greeted with peace as a word from a merciful Lord (55 to 58). For the guilty, their mouths are sealed and their hands and feet testify (65). The final passage answers a man who holds up decayed bones and asks who could bring them back (78). Allah replies that the One who made them the first time will revive them (79), points to fire drawn from green trees (80), says His command for anything is only to say 'Be' and it is (82), and closes with glory to the One in whose hand is the dominion of everything (83).
Main themes
The Prophet's mission affirmed
The surah opens with an oath by the wise Quran that the Prophet ﷺ is truly a messenger on a straight path. His task is to warn, and that warning helps those who are open to it, who follow the reminder and fear the Most Merciful even without seeing Him.
Verses 1–12The town and the man who came running
Three messengers are rejected by a town that calls them a bad omen and threatens them. A single man from the far side of the city speaks up for them and is killed, according to most commentators, and is welcomed into Paradise. Even then his concern is for his people, wishing they could know how he was forgiven.
Verses 13–32Signs in earth and sky
Dead land comes alive with food people did not make themselves, and everything is created in pairs. The night, the sun running its course, the moon's phases and the orbits of the heavenly bodies all keep to their measure, and the ships on the sea carry people only by Allah's mercy.
Verses 33–44Excuses for not giving
When told to spend from what Allah has provided, the deniers reply that they should not feed people whom Allah could feed Himself if He wished. The surah records this as an example of how they turned away from every sign.
Verses 45–50Resurrection and the two outcomes
A blast, then the trumpet, and people rise from their graves to be gathered before Allah, where no soul is wronged. The people of Paradise rest with their spouses in shade and are greeted with peace, while the guilty are reminded of the covenant not to follow Satan, and their own limbs bear witness.
Verses 51–68The One who made you first
The final verses respond to a person who asks who could give life to crumbled bones. The answer is that the One who created them the first time, who brings fire out of green wood and created the heavens and earth, only has to say 'Be' for anything to exist, and to Him everyone will return.
Verses 77–83
Verses to know
It is We who revive the dead; and We write down what they have forwarded, and their traces. We have tallied all things in a Clear Record.
Allah says He records both what people send ahead and the traces they leave behind. Many scholars understood the traces to include the lasting effects of a person's actions, good or bad, after they are gone.
38And the sun runs towards its destination. Such is the design of the Almighty, the All-Knowing. 39And the moon: We have disposed it in phases, until it returns like the old twig. 40The sun is not to overtake the moon, nor is the night to outpace the day. Each floats in an orbit.
These verses describe the sun moving toward its resting place, the moon passing through its phases, and each body floating in its own orbit, with night never outrunning day. They are among the Quran's best-known passages on the order of the heavens.
On this Day, We will seal their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will testify to everything they had done.
On the Day of Judgment mouths are sealed and hands and feet speak about what people did, a vivid picture of how nothing can be hidden.
78And he produces arguments against Us, and he forgets his own creation. He says, “Who will revive the bones when they have decayed?” 79Say, “He who initiated them in the first instance will revive them. He has knowledge of every creation.” 80He who produced fuel for you from the green trees, with which you kindle a fire. 81Is not He who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the like of them? Certainly. He is the Supreme All-Knowing Creator. 82His command, when He wills a thing, is to say to it, “Be,” and it comes to be.
A doubter holds up decayed bones and asks who could revive them. The reply moves from the first creation to fire from green trees to the heavens and earth, and ends with the verse that Allah only has to say 'Be' and a thing comes to be.
When Surah Ya-Sin is recited
Ya-Sin is one of the most often recited surahs in the Muslim world. Many people read it regularly, often on Thursday nights or Fridays, in the morning, or when someone is ill or has died, and it is commonly recited beside a person who is dying. Several popular virtues are attached to it, but scholars of hadith have questioned the narrations behind them. The well-known saying that everything has a heart and the heart of the Quran is Ya-Sin is reported in Jami' at-Tirmidhi, but at-Tirmidhi himself noted a weakness in its chain and many later scholars graded it weak. The instruction to recite Ya-Sin over those who are dying is reported in Sunan Abi Dawud and Sunan Ibn Majah, and it too has been graded weak by many hadith scholars, although some scholars still considered the practice recommended. Reports that reading Ya-Sin at night brings forgiveness, or that reading it in the morning fulfills one's needs, are likewise considered weak. None of this takes away from the surah itself. Its message about the messengers, the signs of Allah and the resurrection is reason enough to read and reflect on it often.
