What Surah Fatir is about

Fatir, The Originator, is the 35th surah of the Quran and lies within juz 22. It was revealed in Mecca. It is named after the word in its first verse describing Allah as the Originator of the heavens and the earth, and it is also known as Al-Mala'ikah, The Angels, because the same verse describes angels as messengers with two, three or four wings.

Verse 2 sets the tone: whatever mercy Allah opens for people, no one can hold back, and whatever He holds back, no one can release. Verses 5 and 6 warn that the promise of Allah is true, so people should not be deceived by this life, and that Satan is an enemy to be treated as one. Verse 10 says all honor belongs to Allah and that good words rise to Him, lifted by good deeds. Verses 12 and 13 point to the fresh and salt seas, both yielding food and ornaments, and to the night, day, sun and moon.

Verse 15 is the surah's center: people are the ones in need of Allah, and Allah is the Rich, the Praiseworthy. Verse 18 adds that no soul will carry another's burden, even a relative's. Verses 19 to 22 set out a series of contrasts: the blind and the seeing, darkness and light, shade and heat, the living and the dead. Verses 27 and 28 point to the different colors of fruits, of mountain streaks and of people and animals, and say that among Allah's servants it is those with knowledge who truly fear Him.

Verses 29 and 30 describe those who recite the Book, pray and give as hoping for a trade that will never fail. Verse 32 says Allah passed the Book on to chosen servants, some of whom wrong themselves, some who are moderate, and some who race ahead in good, and verses 33 to 35 describe Paradise, where fatigue and weariness no longer touch them. The surah ends with those in the Fire asking to be let out, the reminder that they were given a long enough life to reflect (37), and the statement that if Allah punished people at once for what they earned, no creature would be left on earth (45).

Main themes

  1. The Originator and His mercy

The surah opens by praising Allah as the Originator of the heavens and earth who made angels as winged messengers. Verse 2 says no one can withhold mercy that He opens or release what He withholds.

    Verses 1–4
  2. Do not be deceived

People are warned not to be deceived by worldly life or by Satan, who should be treated as an enemy. Verse 8 tells the Prophet ﷺ not to wear himself out with grief over those who do not believe.

    Verses 5–8
  3. Honor, good words and signs in nature

All honor belongs to Allah, and good words rise to Him carried by good deeds. The surah points to wind and rain reviving dead land as a picture of resurrection, and to the two kinds of sea, each with its own gifts.

    Verses 9–14
  4. You are the ones in need

Verse 15 tells all people that they are poor and dependent on Allah, while He is rich and praiseworthy. The following verses say each soul carries its own burden and contrast the blind with the seeing and darkness with light.

    Verses 15–26
  5. Colors, knowledge and awe

The variety of colors in fruits, rocks, people and animals is given as a sign, and verse 28 says it is people of knowledge who truly stand in awe of Allah. Those who recite His Book, pray and give are described as hoping for a trade that will never fail.

    Verses 27–30
  6. Three kinds of inheritors

Those who inherit the Book are of three kinds: those who wrong themselves, those who are moderate, and those who race ahead in good. All three are described entering gardens and thanking Allah for removing their grief.

    Verses 31–35

Verses to know

Whatever mercy Allah unfolds for the people, none can withhold it. And if He withholds it, none can release it thereafter. He is the Exalted in Power, Full of Wisdom.
Fatir 35:2

This verse says that no one can withhold mercy that Allah opens, and no one can release what He holds back. It is often recalled as a source of calm in uncertain times.

O people! It is you who are the poor, in need of Allah; while Allah is the Rich, the Praiseworthy.
Fatir 35:15

In one sentence it tells all people that they are the ones in need of Allah, while He is free of need and worthy of praise.

Likewise, human beings, animals, and livestock come in various colors. From among His servants, the learned fear Allah. Allah is Almighty, Oft-Forgiving.
Fatir 35:28

After pointing to the variety of colors in creation, it says that among Allah's servants, those with knowledge are the ones who truly fear Him.

Then We passed the Book to those of Our servants whom We chose. Some of them wrong their souls, and some follow a middle course, and some are in the foremost in good deeds by Allah’s leave; that is the greatest blessing.
Fatir 35:32

It describes three kinds of people among those given the Book, including those who wrong themselves, and the following verses still speak of them entering Paradise, which many scholars have seen as a hopeful message.

Praise be to Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Maker of the angels messengers with wings—double, triple, and quadruple. He adds to creation as He wills. Allah is Able to do all things.

  2. 2

Ma yaftahi Allahu lilnnasi min rahmatin fala mumsika laha wama yumsik fala mursila lahu min baAAdihi wahuwa alAAazeezu alhakeemu

Whatever mercy Allah unfolds for the people, none can withhold it. And if He withholds it, none can release it thereafter. He is the Exalted in Power, Full of Wisdom.

  3. 3

Ya ayyuha alnnasu othkuroo niAAmata Allahi AAalaykum hal min khaliqin ghayru Allahi yarzuqukum mina alssamai waalardi la ilaha illa huwa faanna tufakoona

O people! Remember Allah’s blessings upon you. Is there a creator other than Allah who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? There is no god but He. So how are you misled?

  4. 4

Wain yukaththibooka faqad kuththibat rusulun min qablika waila Allahi turjaAAu alomooru

If they reject you, messengers before you were also rejected. To Allah all matters are returned.

  5. 5

Ya ayyuha alnnasu inna waAAda Allahi haqqun fala taghurrannakumu alhayatu alddunya wala yaghurrannakum biAllahi algharooru

O people! The promise of Allah is true; so let not the lowly life seduce you, and let not the Tempter tempt you away from Allah.

  6. 6

Inna alshshaytana lakum AAaduwwun faittakhithoohu AAaduwwan innama yadAAoo hizbahu liyakoonoo min ashabi alssaAAeeri

Satan is an enemy to you, so treat him as an enemy. He only invites his gang to be among the inmates of the Inferno.

  7. 7

Allatheena kafaroo lahum AAathabun shadeedun waallatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati lahum maghfiratun waajrun kabeerun

Those who disbelieve will suffer a harsh punishment, but those who believe and do righteous deeds will have forgiveness and a great reward.

  8. 8

Afaman zuyyina lahu sooo AAamalihi faraahu hasanan fainna Allaha yudillu man yashao wayahdee man yashao fala tathhab nafsuka AAalayhim hasaratin inna Allaha AAaleemun bima yasnaAAoona

What of him whose evil deed was made attractive to him, and so he regards it as good? Allah leads astray whomever He wills, and He guides whomever He wills. Therefore, do not waste yourself sorrowing over them. Allah knows exactly what they do.

  9. 9

WaAllahu allathee arsala alrriyaha fatutheeru sahaban fasuqnahu ila baladin mayyitin faahyayna bihi alarda baAAda mawtiha kathalika alnnushooru

Allah is He who sends the winds, which agitate clouds, which We drive to a dead land, and thereby revive the ground after it had died. Likewise is the Resurrection.

  10. 10

Man kana yureedu alAAizzata falillahi alAAizzatu jameeAAan ilayhi yasAAadu alkalimu alttayyibu waalAAamalu alssalihu yarfaAAuhu waallatheena yamkuroona alssayyiati lahum AAathabun shadeedun wamakru olaika huwa yabooru

Whoever desires honor—all honor belongs to Allah. To Him ascends speech that is pure, and He elevates righteous conduct. As for those who plot evil, a terrible punishment awaits them, and the planning of these will fail.

  11. 11

WaAllahu khalaqakum min turabin thumma min nutfatin thumma jaAAalakum azwajan wama tahmilu min ontha wala tadaAAu illa biAAilmihi wama yuAAammaru min muAAammarin wala yunqasu min AAumurihi illa fee kitabin inna thalika AAala Allahi yaseerun

Allah created you from dust, then from a small drop; then He made you pairs. No female conceives, or delivers, except with His knowledge. No living thing advances in years, or its life is shortened, except it be in a Record. That is surely easy for Allah.

  12. 12

Wama yastawee albahrani hatha AAathbun furatun saighun sharabuhu wahatha milhun ojajun wamin kullin takuloona lahman tariyyan watastakhrijoona hilyatan talbasoonaha watara alfulka feehi mawakhira litabtaghoo min fadlihi walaAAallakum tashkuroona

The two seas are not the same. One is fresh, sweet, good to drink, while the other is salty and bitter. Yet from each you eat tender meat, and extract jewelry which you wear. And you see the ships plowing through them, so that you may seek of His bounty, so that you may give thanks.

  13. 13

Yooliju allayla fee alnnahari wayooliju alnnahara fee allayli wasakhkhara alshshamsa waalqamara kullun yajree liajalin musamman thalikumu Allahu rabbukum lahu almulku waallatheena tadAAoona min doonihi ma yamlikoona min qitmeerin

He merges the night into the day, and He merges the day into the night; and He regulates the sun and the moon, each running for a stated term. Such is Allah, your Lord; His is the sovereignty. As for those you call upon besides Him, they do not possess a speck.

  14. 14

In tadAAoohum la yasmaAAoo duAAaakum walaw samiAAoo ma istajaboo lakum wayawma alqiyamati yakfuroona bishirkikum wala yunabbioka mithlu khabeerin

If you pray to them, they cannot hear your prayer. And even if they heard, they would not answer you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will reject your partnership. None informs you like an Expert.

  15. 15

Ya ayyuha alnnasu antumu alfuqarao ila Allahi waAllahu huwa alghaniyyu alhameedu

O people! It is you who are the poor, in need of Allah; while Allah is the Rich, the Praiseworthy.

  16. 16

In yasha yuthhibkum wayati bikhalqin jadeedin

If He wills, He can do away with you, and produce a new creation.

  17. 17

    Wama thalika AAala Allahi biAAazeezin

And that would not be difficult for Allah.

  18. 18

Wala taziru waziratun wizra okhra wain tadAAu muthqalatun ila himliha la yuhmal minhu shayon walaw kana tha qurba innama tunthiru allatheena yakhshawna rabbahum bialghaybi waaqamoo alssalata waman tazakka fainnama yatazakka linafsihi waila Allahi almaseeru

No burdened soul can carry the burden of another. Even if one weighed down calls for help with its burden, nothing can be lifted from it, even if they were related. You are to warn those who fear their Lord inwardly, and perform the prayer. He who purifies himself purifies himself for his own good. To Allah is the ultimate return.

  19. 19

    Wama yastawee alaAAma waalbaseeru

Not equal are the blind and the seeing.

  20. 20

    Wala alththulumatu wala alnnooru

Nor are the darkness and the light.

  21. 21

    Wala alththillu wala alharooru

Nor are the shade and the torrid heat.

  22. 22

Wama yastawee alahyao wala alamwatu inna Allaha yusmiAAu man yashao wama anta bimusmiAAin man fee alquboori

Nor are equal the living and the dead. Allah causes whomever He wills to hear, but you cannot make those in the graves hear.

  23. 23

    In anta illa natheerun

    You are only a warner.

  24. 24

Inna arsalnaka bialhaqqi basheeran wanatheeran wain min ommatin illa khala feeha natheerun

We sent you with the truth; a bearer of good news, and a warner. There is no community but a warner has passed through it.

  25. 25

Wain yukaththibooka faqad kaththaba allatheena min qablihim jaathum rusuluhum bialbayyinati wabialzzuburi wabialkitabi almuneeri

If they disbelieve you, those before them also disbelieved. Their messengers came to them with the clear proofs, with the Psalms, and with the Enlightening Scripture.

  26. 26

Thumma akhathtu allatheena kafaroo fakayfa kana nakeeri

Then I seized those who disbelieved—so how was My rejection?

  27. 27

Alam tara anna Allaha anzala mina alssamai maan faakhrajna bihi thamaratin mukhtalifan alwanuha wamina aljibali judadun beedun wahumrun mukhtalifun alwanuha wagharabeebu soodun

Have you not seen that Allah sends down water from the sky? With it We produce fruits of various colors. And in the mountains are streaks of white and red—varying in their hue—and pitch-black.

  28. 28

Wamina alnnasi waalddawabbi waalanAAami mukhtalifun alwanuhu kathalika innama yakhsha Allaha min AAibadihi alAAulamao inna Allaha AAazeezun ghafoorun

Likewise, human beings, animals, and livestock come in various colors. From among His servants, the learned fear Allah. Allah is Almighty, Oft-Forgiving.

  29. 29

Inna allatheena yatloona kitaba Allahi waaqamoo alssalata waanfaqoo mimma razaqnahum sirran waAAalaniyatan yarjoona tijaratan lan taboora

Those who recite the Book of Allah, and perform the prayer, and spend of what We have provided for them, secretly and publicly, expect a trade that will not fail.

  30. 30

Liyuwaffiyahum ojoorahum wayazeedahum min fadlihi innahu ghafoorun shakoorun

He will pay them their dues in full, and will increase them from His bounty. He is Forgiving and Appreciative.

  31. 31

Waallathee awhayna ilayka mina alkitabi huwa alhaqqu musaddiqan lima bayna yadayhi inna Allaha biAAibadihi lakhabeerun baseerun

What We inspired in you, of the Book, is the truth, confirming what preceded it. Allah is Well-Informed of His servants, All-Seeing.

  32. 32

Thumma awrathna alkitaba allatheena istafayna min AAibadina faminhum thalimun linafsihi waminhum muqtasidun waminhum sabiqun bialkhayrati biithni Allahi thalika huwa alfadlu alkabeeru

Then We passed the Book to those of Our servants whom We chose. Some of them wrong their souls, and some follow a middle course, and some are in the foremost in good deeds by Allah’s leave; that is the greatest blessing.

  33. 33

Jannatu AAadnin yadkhuloonaha yuhallawna feeha min asawira min thahabin waluluan walibasuhum feeha hareerun

The Gardens of Eden, which they will enter. They will be adorned therein with gold bracelets and pearls, and their garments therein will be of silk.

  34. 34

Waqaloo alhamdu lillahi allathee athhaba AAanna alhazana inna rabbana laghafoorun shakoorun

And they will say, “Praise Allah, who has lifted all sorrow from us. Our Lord is Most Forgiving, Most Appreciative.

  35. 35

Allathee ahallana dara almuqamati min fadlihi la yamassuna feeha nasabun wala yamassuna feeha lughoobun

He who settled us in the Home of Permanence, by His grace, where boredom will not touch us, and fatigue will not afflict us.”

  36. 36

Waallatheena kafaroo lahum naru jahannama la yuqda AAalayhim fayamootoo wala yukhaffafu AAanhum min AAathabiha kathalika najzee kulla kafoorin

As for those who disbelieve, for them is the Fire of Hell, wherein they will never be finished off and die, nor will its punishment be lightened for them. Thus We will repay every ingrate.

  37. 37

Wahum yastarikhoona feeha rabbana akhrijna naAAmal salihan ghayra allathee kunna naAAmalu awalam nuAAammirkum ma yatathakkaru feehi man tathakkara wajaakumu alnnatheeru fathooqoo fama lilththalimeena min naseerin

And they will scream therein, “Our Lord, let us out, and we will act righteously, differently from the way we used to act.” Did We not give you a life long enough, in which anyone who wanted to understand would have understood? And the warner did come to you. So taste. The evildoers will have no helper.

  38. 38

Inna Allaha AAalimu ghaybi alssamawati waalardi innahu AAaleemun bithati alssudoori

Allah is the Knower of the future of the heavens and the earth. He knows what the hearts contain.

  39. 39

Huwa allathee jaAAalakum khalaifa fee alardi faman kafara faAAalayhi kufruhu wala yazeedu alkafireena kufruhum AAinda rabbihim illa maqtan wala yazeedu alkafireena kufruhum illa khasaran

It is He who made you successors on earth. Whoever disbelieves, his disbelief will recoil upon him. The disbelief of the disbelievers adds only to their Lord’s disfavor of them. The disbelief of the disbelievers adds only to their perdition.

  40. 40

Qul araaytum shurakaakumu allatheena tadAAoona min dooni Allahi aroonee matha khalaqoo mina alardi am lahum shirkun fee alssamawati am ataynahum kitaban fahum AAala bayyinatin minhu bal in yaAAidu alththalimoona baAAduhum baAAdan illa ghurooran

Say, “Have you considered those partners of yours that you worship instead of Allah? Show me what they have created on earth. Or do they have any share in the heavens?” Or have We given them a book whose clear teachings they follow? In fact, the wrongdoers promise one another nothing but delusions.

  41. 41

Inna Allaha yumsiku alssamawati waalarda an tazoola walain zalata in amsakahuma min ahadin min baAAdihi innahu kana haleeman ghafooran

Allah holds the heavens and the earth, lest they fall apart. And were they to fall apart, there is none to hold them together except He. He is Most Clement, Most Forgiving.

  42. 42

Waaqsamoo biAllahi jahda aymanihim lain jaahum natheerun layakoonunna ahda min ihda alomami falamma jaahum natheerun ma zadahum illa nufooran

And they swore by Allah with their solemn oaths, that if a warner came to them, they would be more guided than any other people. Yet when a warner came to them, it only increased them in aversion.

  43. 43

Istikbaran fee alardi wamakra alssayyii wala yaheequ almakru alssayyio illa biahlihi fahal yanthuroona illa sunnata alawwaleena falan tajida lisunnati Allahi tabdeelan walan tajida lisunnati Allahi tahweelan

Priding themselves on earth, and scheming evil. But evil scheming overwhelms none but its authors. Do they expect anything but the precedent of the ancients? You will not find any change in Allah’s practice, and you will not find any substitute to Allah’s practice.

  44. 44

Awalam yaseeroo fee alardi fayanthuroo kayfa kana AAaqibatu allatheena min qablihim wakanoo ashadda minhum quwwatan wama kana Allahu liyuAAjizahu min shayin fee alssamawati wala fee alardi innahu kana AAaleeman qadeeran

Have they not journeyed in the land and observed the fate of those who preceded them? They were superior to them in strength. But nothing can defeat Allah in the heavens or on earth. He is indeed Omniscient and Omnipotent.

  45. 45

Walaw yuakhithu Allahu alnnasa bima kasaboo ma taraka AAala thahriha min dabbatin walakin yuakhkhiruhum ila ajalin musamman faitha jaa ajaluhum fainna Allaha kana biAAibadihi baseeran

If Allah were to punish the people for what they have earned, He would not leave a single living creature on its surface. But He defers them until a stated time. Then, when their time has arrived—Allah is Observant of His creatures.
