What Surah Az-Zukhruf is about

Surah Az-Zukhruf is the 43rd surah of the Quran, a Meccan surah of 89 verses. Its name, "Ornaments of Gold", comes from verse 35, which says that silver roofs, stairways and gold decorations are only the enjoyment of this life. It is one of the seven surahs that begin with Ha Meem.

After an oath by the clear Book (43:2-4), the surah reminds its listeners that they themselves admit Allah created the heavens and earth (43:9). It lists His gifts: the earth as a resting place, rain that revives dead land, and ships and animals to ride. Verses 13-14 teach what to say when mounting a ride: glory to the One who made this subservient to us, and to our Lord we will return. This is the basis of the well-known travel supplication.

Verses 15-25 criticize the belief that angels are Allah's daughters and the habit of following forefathers without thought, which every earlier warner faced. Abraham (Ibrahim) is the counterexample, declaring himself free of what his people worshipped (43:26-28). The Meccans asked why the Quran was not sent to an important man from the two cities (43:31), and the surah answers that the mercy of Allah is not theirs to distribute, and that wealth is so insignificant to Him that He could have given unbelievers houses of silver and gold (43:32-35).

Moses (Musa) faces a Pharaoh who boasts of owning Egypt and its rivers and mocks Moses for having no gold bracelets (43:46-56). Jesus (Isa) is described as a servant whom Allah blessed and made an example, who told people that Allah is his Lord and theirs (43:57-65). The final section shows that on the Last Day close friends become enemies except for those mindful of Allah (43:67), and believers are welcomed into the Garden with their spouses (43:68-73). The surah ends by telling the Prophet ﷺ to turn away gently and say peace (43:89).

Main themes

  1. Gratitude while travelling

The surah turns everyday things, roads across the earth, rain, ships and riding animals, into reminders of Allah. It teaches the rider to glorify the One who made the mount subservient and to remember the final return to Him.

    Verses 9–14
  2. Following forefathers

Each community, the surah says, answered its warner by saying it was following its parents' way. Even when offered better guidance, they refused. Abraham breaks this pattern by disowning his people's idols and keeping a lasting word of faith among his descendants.

    Verses 22–28
  3. Gold is not the measure

The Meccans judged worth by status and wealth. The surah replies that Allah has divided livelihoods and that the ornaments of this world are trivial, while the Hereafter with Allah is for the righteous.

    Verses 31–35
  4. The companion of the heedless

Whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Gracious is given a devil as a companion who leads him astray while he thinks he is guided. On the Last Day he wishes the two were as far apart as east and west.

    Verses 36–39
  5. Pharaoh and Jesus

Pharaoh boasts of his kingdom and rivers and mocks Moses for lacking gold, and his people follow him to their drowning. Jesus, by contrast, is described as a blessed servant who called people to worship Allah, their Lord and his.

    Verses 46–65
  6. Friends on the Last Day

Friendships built on anything other than mindfulness of Allah turn into enmity. Allah's servants are told they have nothing to fear and are invited into the Garden, while the people of Hell ask its keeper Malik for an end and are told they will remain.

    Verses 67–89

Verses to know

13That you may mount their backs, and remember the favor of your Lord as you sit firmly upon them, and say, “Glory be to Him who placed these at our service; surely we could not have done it by ourselves. 14And surely, to our Lord we will return.”
Az-Zukhruf 43:13–14

These verses form the core of the supplication Muslims say when setting out to travel or mounting a vehicle.

Whoever shuns the remembrance of the Most Gracious, We assign for him a devil, to be his companion.
Az-Zukhruf 43:36

It links turning away from Allah's remembrance with gaining a devilish companion, a warning about what fills the space when remembrance is absent.

51Pharaoh proclaimed among his people, saying, “O my people, do I not own the kingdom of Egypt, and these rivers flow beneath me? Do you not see? 52Am I not better than this miserable wretch, who can barely express himself?
Az-Zukhruf 43:51–52

Pharaoh's speech shows how power and wealth were used to make a messenger look small. The surah's title theme is visible here.

On that Day, friends will be enemies of one another, except for the righteous.
Az-Zukhruf 43:67

A short verse on friendship: on that Day close friends become enemies, except those who were mindful of Allah.

When Surah Az-Zukhruf is recited

There is no widely established special time for reciting the whole of Surah Az-Zukhruf. Its verses 13-14, however, are recited by many Muslims whenever they set out to travel. Sahih Muslim reports, from Ibn Umar, that when the Prophet ﷺ mounted his camel to travel he would say Allahu akbar three times and then recite these words, followed by a further supplication for travel.

WajaAAaloo lahu min AAibadihi juzan inna alinsana lakafoorun mubeenun

Yet they turn one of His servants into a part of Him. Man is clearly ungrateful.

  16. 16

Or has He chosen for Himself daughters from what He creates, and favored you with sons?

  17. 17

Waitha bushshira ahaduhum bima daraba lilrrahmani mathalan thalla wajhuhu muswaddan wahuwa katheemun

Yet when one of them is given news of what he attributes to the Most Gracious, his face darkens, and he suppresses grief.

  18. 18

Awaman yunashshao fee alhilyati wahuwa fee alkhisami ghayru mubeenin

“Someone brought up to be beautiful, and unable to help in a fight?”

  19. 19

WajaAAaloo almalaikata allatheena hum AAibadu alrrahmani inathan ashahidoo khalqahum satuktabu shahadatuhum wayusaloona

And they appoint the angels, who are servants to the Most Gracious, as females. Have they witnessed their creation? Their claim will be recorded, and they will be questioned.

  20. 20

Waqaloo law shaa alrrahmanu ma AAabadnahum ma lahum bithalika min AAilmin in hum illa yakhrusoona

And they say, “Had the Most Gracious willed, we would not have worshiped them.” But they have no knowledge of that; they are merely guessing.

  21. 21

Am ataynahum kitaban min qablihi fahum bihi mustamsikoona

Or have We given them a book prior to this one, to which they adhere?

  22. 22

Bal qaloo inna wajadna abaana AAala ommatin wainna AAala atharihim muhtadoona

But they say, “We found our parents on a course, and we are guided in their footsteps.”

  23. 23

Wakathalika ma arsalna min qablika fee qaryatin min natheerin illa qala mutrafooha inna wajadna abaana AAala ommatin wainna AAala atharihim muqtadoona

Likewise, We sent no warner before you to any town, but the wealthy among them said, “We found our parents on a course, and we are following in their footsteps.”

  24. 24

Qala awalaw jitukum biahda mimma wajadtum AAalayhi abaakum qaloo inna bima orsiltum bihi kafiroona

He would say, “Even if I bring you better guidance than what you found your parents following?” They would say, “We reject what you are sent with.”

  25. 25

Faintaqamna minhum faonthur kayfa kana AAaqibatu almukaththibeena

So We wreaked vengeance upon them. Behold, then, what was the fate of those who deny.

  26. 26

Waith qala ibraheemu liabeehi waqawmihi innanee baraon mimma taAAbudoona

When Abraham said to his father and his people, “I am innocent of what you worship.

  27. 27

    Illa allathee fataranee fainnahu sayahdeeni

Except for Him who created me, for He will guide me.”

  28. 28

WajaAAalaha kalimatan baqiyatan fee AAaqibihi laAAallahum yarjiAAoona

And he made it an enduring word in his progeny, so that they may return.

  29. 29

Bal mattaAAtu haolai waabaahum hatta jaahumu alhaqqu warasoolun mubeenun

I gave these and their forefathers some enjoyment, until the truth and a manifest messenger came to them.

  30. 30

Walamma jaahumu alhaqqu qaloo hatha sihrun wainna bihi kafiroona

But when the truth came to them, they said, “This is sorcery, and we refuse to believe in it.”

  31. 31

Waqaloo lawla nuzzila hatha alquranu AAala rajulin mina alqaryatayni AAatheemun

They also said, “If only this Quran was sent down to a man of importance from the two cities.”

  32. 32

Ahum yaqsimoona rahmata rabbika nahnu qasamna baynahum maAAeeshatahum fee alhayati alddunya warafaAAna baAAdahum fawqa baAAdin darajatin liyattakhitha baAAduhum baAAdan sukhriyyan warahmatu rabbika khayrun mimma yajmaAAoona

Is it they who allocate the mercy of your Lord? It is We who have allocated their livelihood in this life, and We elevated some of them in rank above others, that some of them would take others in service. But your Lord’s mercy is better than what they amass.

  33. 33

Walawla an yakoona alnnasu ommatan wahidatan lajaAAalna liman yakfuru bialrrahmani libuyootihim suqufan min fiddatin wamaAAarija AAalayha yathharoona

Were it not that humanity would become a single community, We would have provided those who disbelieve in the Most Gracious with roofs of silver to their houses, and stairways by which they ascend.

  34. 34

    Walibuyootihim abwaban wasururan AAalayha yattakioona

And doors to their houses, and furnishings on which they recline.

  35. 35

Wazukhrufan wain kullu thalika lamma mataAAu alhayati alddunya waalakhiratu AAinda rabbika lilmuttaqeena

And decorations. Yet all that is nothing but the stuff of this life. Yet the Hereafter, with your Lord, is for the righteous.

  36. 36

Waman yaAAshu AAan thikri alrrahmani nuqayyid lahu shaytanan fahuwa lahu qareenun

Whoever shuns the remembrance of the Most Gracious, We assign for him a devil, to be his companion.

  37. 37

Wainnahum layasuddoonahum AAani alssabeeli wayahsaboona annahum muhtadoona

They hinder them from the path, though they think they are guided.

  38. 38

Hatta itha jaana qala ya layta baynee wabaynaka buAAda almashriqayni fabisa alqareenu

Until, when he comes to Us, he will say, “If only there were between me and you the distance of the two Easts.” What an evil companion!

  39. 39

Walan yanfaAAakumu alyawma ith thalamtum annakum fee alAAathabi mushtarikoona

It will not benefit you on that Day, since you did wrong. You are partners in the suffering.

  40. 40

Afaanta tusmiAAu alssumma aw tahdee alAAumya waman kana fee dalalin mubeenin

Can you make the deaf hear, or guide the blind, and him who is in evident error?

  41. 41

Faimma nathhabanna bika fainna minhum muntaqimoona

Even if We take you away, We will wreak vengeance upon them.

  42. 42

Aw nuriyannaka allathee waAAadnahum fainna AAalayhim muqtadiroona

Or show you what We have promised them; for We have absolute power over them.

  43. 43

Faistamsik biallathee oohiya ilayka innaka AAala siratin mustaqeemin

So adhere to what is revealed to you. You are upon a straight path.

  44. 44

Wainnahu lathikrun laka waliqawmika wasawfa tusaloona

It is a message for you, and for your people; and you will be questioned.

  45. 45

Waisal man arsalna min qablika min rusulina ajaAAalna min dooni alrrahmani alihatan yuAAbadoona

Ask those of Our messengers We sent before you: “Did We appoint gods besides the Most Gracious to be worshiped?”

  46. 46

Walaqad arsalna moosa biayatina ila firAAawna wamalaihi faqala innee rasoolu rabbi alAAalameena

We sent Moses with Our revelations to Pharaoh and his dignitaries. He said, “I am the messenger of the Lord of the Worlds.”

  47. 47

Falamma jaahum biayatina itha hum minha yadhakoona

But when he showed them Our signs, they started laughing at them.

  48. 48

Wama nureehim min ayatin illa hiya akbaru min okhtiha waakhathnahum bialAAathabi laAAallahum yarjiAAoona

Each sign We showed them was more marvelous than its counterpart. And We afflicted them with the plagues, so that they may repent.

  49. 49

Waqaloo ya ayyuha alsahiru odAAu lana rabbaka bima AAahida AAindaka innana lamuhtadoona

They said, “O sorcerer, pray to your Lord for us, according to His pledge to you, and then we will be guided.”

  50. 50

Falamma kashafna AAanhumu alAAathaba itha hum yankuthoona

But when We lifted the torment from them, they immediately broke their promise.

  51. 51

Wanada firAAawnu fee qawmihi qala ya qawmi alaysa lee mulku misra wahathihi alanharu tajree min tahtee afala tubsiroona

Pharaoh proclaimed among his people, saying, “O my people, do I not own the kingdom of Egypt, and these rivers flow beneath me? Do you not see?

  52. 52

Am ana khayrun min hatha allathee huwa maheenun wala yakadu yubeenu

Am I not better than this miserable wretch, who can barely express himself?

  53. 53

Falawla olqiya AAalayhi aswiratun min thahabin aw jaa maAAahu almalaikatu muqtarineena

Why are bracelets of gold not dropped on him, or the angels came with him in procession?”

  54. 54

Faistakhaffa qawmahu faataAAoohu innahum kanoo qawman fasiqeena

Thus he fooled his people, and they obeyed him. They were wicked people.

  55. 55

Falamma asafoona intaqamna minhum faaghraqnahum ajmaAAeena

And when they provoked Our wrath, We took retribution from them, and We drowned them all.

  56. 56

    FajaAAalnahum salafan wamathalan lilakhireena

Thus We made them a precedent and an example for the others.

  57. 57

Walamma duriba ibnu maryama mathalan itha qawmuka minhu yasiddoona

And when the son of Mary was cited as an example, your people opposed.

  58. 58

Waqaloo aalihatuna khayrun am huwa ma daraboohu laka illa jadalan bal hum qawmun khasimoona

They said, “Are our gods better, or he?” They cited him only for argument. In fact, they are a quarrelsome people.

  59. 59

In huwa illa AAabdun anAAamna AAalayhi wajaAAalnahu mathalan libanee israeela

He was just a servant whom We blessed, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.

  60. 60

Walaw nashao lajaAAalna minkum malaikatan fee alardi yakhlufoona

Had We willed, We would have made of you angels to be successors on earth.

  61. 61

Wainnahu laAAilmun lilssaAAati fala tamtarunna biha waittabiAAooni hatha siratun mustaqeemun

He is a portent of the Hour, so have no doubt about it, and follow Me. This is a straight way.

  62. 62

Wala yasuddannakumu alshshaytanu innahu lakum AAaduwwun mubeenun

And let not Satan divert you. He is an open enemy to you.

  63. 63

Walamma jaa AAeesa bialbayyinati qala qad jitukum bialhikmati waliobayyina lakum baAAda allathee takhtalifoona feehi faittaqoo Allaha waateeAAooni

When Jesus came with the clarifications, he said, “I have come to you with wisdom, and to clarify for you some of what you differ about. So fear Allah, and obey me.

  64. 64

Inna Allaha huwa rabbee warabbukum faoAAbudoohu hatha siratun mustaqeemun

Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him—this is a straight path.”

  65. 65

Faikhtalafa alahzabu min baynihim fawaylun lillatheena thalamoo min AAathabi yawmin aleemin

But the factions differed among themselves. So woe to the wrongdoers from the suffering of a painful Day.

  66. 66

Hal yanthuroona illa alssaAAata an tatiyahum baghtatan wahum la yashAAuroona

Are they only waiting for the Hour to come upon them suddenly, while they are unaware?

  67. 67

Alakhillao yawmaithin baAAduhum libaAAdin AAaduwwun illa almuttaqeena

On that Day, friends will be enemies of one another, except for the righteous.

  68. 68

O My servants, you have nothing to fear on that Day, nor will you grieve.

  69. 69

    Allatheena amanoo biayatina wakanoo muslimeena

Those who believed in Our revelations, and were submissive.

  70. 70

    Odkhuloo aljannata antum waazwajukum tuhbaroona

Enter the Garden, you and your spouses, joyfully.

  71. 71

Yutafu AAalayhim bisihafin min thahabin waakwabin wafeeha ma tashtaheehi alanfusu watalaththu alaAAyunu waantum feeha khalidoona

They will be served around with trays of gold, and cups. Therein is whatever the souls desire and delights the eyes. Therein you will stay forever.

  72. 72

Watilka aljannatu allatee oorithtumooha bima kuntum taAAmaloona

Such is the Garden you are made to inherit, because of what you used to do.

  73. 73

Lakum feeha fakihatun katheeratun minha takuloona

Therein you will have abundant fruit, from which you eat.

  74. 74

Inna almujrimeena fee AAathabi jahannama khalidoona

As for the sinners, they will be in the torment of Hell forever.

  75. 75

La yufattaru AAanhum wahum feehi mublisoona

It will never be eased for them. In it, they will be devastated.

  76. 76

Wama thalamnahum walakin kanoo humu alththalimeena

We did them no injustice, but it was they who were the unjust.

  77. 77

Wanadaw ya maliku liyaqdi AAalayna rabbuka qala innakum makithoona

And they will cry, “O Malek, let your Lord finish us off.” He will say, “You are staying.”

  78. 78

Laqad jinakum bialhaqqi walakinna aktharakum lilhaqqi karihoona

We have given you the truth, but most of you hate the truth.

  79. 79

    Am abramoo amran fainna mubrimoona

Have they contrived some scheme? We too are contriving.

  80. 80

Am yahsaboona anna la nasmaAAu sirrahum wanajwahum bala warusuluna ladayhim yaktuboona

Or do they think that We cannot hear their secrets and their conspiracies? Yes indeed, Our messengers are by them, writing down.

  81. 81

Qul in kana lilrrahmani waladun faana awwalu alAAabideena

Say, “If the Most Gracious had a son, I would be the first to worship.”

  82. 82

Subhana rabbi alssamawati waalardi rabbi alAAarshi AAamma yasifoona

Glorified be the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Throne, beyond what they describe.

  83. 83

Fatharhum yakhoodoo wayalAAaboo hatta yulaqoo yawmahumu allathee yooAAadoona

So leave them to blunder and play, until they encounter their Day which they are promised.

  84. 84

Wahuwa allathee fee alssamai ilahun wafee alardi ilahun wahuwa alhakeemu alAAaleemu

It is He who is Allah in heaven, and Allah on earth. He is the Wise, the Knower.

  85. 85

Watabaraka allathee lahu mulku alssamawati waalardi wama baynahuma waAAindahu AAilmu alssaAAati wailayhi turjaAAoona

And blessed is He who has sovereignty over the heavens and the earth and what is between them. He alone has knowledge of the Hour, and to Him you will be returned.

  86. 86

Wala yamliku allatheena yadAAoona min doonihi alshshafaAAata illa man shahida bialhaqqi wahum yaAAlamoona

Those they invoke besides Him are incapable of intercession; only those who testify to the truth and have knowledge.

  87. 87

Walain saaltahum man khalaqahum layaqoolunna Allahu faanna yufakoona

And if you asked them, “Who created them?” they would say, “Allah.” Why then do they deviate?

  88. 88

Waqeelihi yarabbi inna haolai qawmun la yuminoona

As for his statement: “My Lord, these are a people who do not believe.”

  89. 89

Faisfah AAanhum waqul salamun fasawfa yaAAlamoona

Pardon them, and say, “Peace.” They will come to know.
