What Surah Fussilat is about
Surah Fussilat is the 41st surah of the Quran, a Meccan surah of 54 verses. Its name, "Explained in Detail", comes from verse 3, which describes a Book whose verses are made clear, an Arabic Quran for people who know. It is also known as Ha Mim As-Sajdah, because it begins with Ha Meem and contains a verse of prostration (41:37-38).
The surah opens with people who say their hearts are covered and their ears closed to the message (41:5). The Prophet ﷺ is told to answer that he is only a human like them, to whom it is revealed that Allah is One (41:6). Verses 9-12 then describe the creation of the earth, its mountains and provisions, and the sky, which was smoke when Allah called it and the earth to come, and they came willingly.
Verses 13-18 warn of a thunderbolt like the one that struck Aad, who asked who could be stronger than them, and Thamud, who preferred blindness to guidance. One of the surah's most striking scenes follows (41:19-23): on the Day of Judgment people's hearing, sight and skins testify against them, and when they ask their skins why, the skins reply that Allah, who gives speech to all things, made them speak.
In contrast, verses 30-32 promise that angels descend on those who say their Lord is Allah and then stand firm, telling them not to fear or grieve. Verses 33-36 teach believers to call to Allah and to repel evil with what is better, so that an enemy may become a close friend. The surah closes with the Quran as a guidance and healing for believers (41:44) and a promise that Allah will show His signs on the horizons and within people themselves (41:53).
Main themes
A Book made clear
The surah describes the Quran as a clear Arabic revelation bringing good news and warning, and records how some refused to listen at all. The Prophet ﷺ's answer is humble: he is a human being to whom it has been revealed that Allah is One.
Verses 1–8Creation, willingly
Allah creates the earth and its provisions, then turns to the sky while it is smoke and commands both to come. They answer that they come willingly, and He completes seven heavens and adorns the nearest with lamps.
Verses 9–12When your own skin speaks
On the Day of Judgment, people's own hearing, sight and skin bear witness against them. The surah says it was their assumption that Allah did not know much of what they did that ruined them.
Verses 19–25Standing firm and answering evil with good
Those who affirm Allah as their Lord and remain steadfast are given the angels' reassurance. Believers are then told that good and evil are not equal, and to respond to harm with something better. Only the patient, the surah says, are given this.
Verses 30–36Signs on the horizons and within
The surah describes rain reviving dead land as a sign of resurrection, the Quran as protected from falsehood, and human fickleness in times of ease and hardship. It ends with the promise that Allah will show people His signs in the world and within themselves.
Verses 37–54
Verses to know
And they will say to their skins, “Why did you testify against us?” They will say, “Allah, who made all things speak, made us speak. It is He who created you the first time, and to Him you are returned.”
People ask their own skins why they testified, and are told that Allah, who made everything speak, gave them speech. Few verses describe accountability so personally.
Surely, those who say, “Our Lord is Allah,” and then go straight, the angels will descend upon them: “Do not fear, and do not grieve, but rejoice in the news of the Garden which you were promised.
It joins faith to steadfastness: those who say their Lord is Allah and then stay upright are met by angels telling them not to fear or grieve.
Good and evil are not equal. Repel evil with good, and the person who was your enemy becomes like an intimate friend.
A short instruction with wide reach: repel evil with what is better, and an enemy may become a close friend. It is often quoted on dealing with conflict.
We will show them Our proofs on the horizons, and in their very souls, until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. Is it not sufficient that your Lord is witness over everything?
Allah promises to show His signs both in the wider world and within human beings themselves, until it becomes clear to them that this is the truth.
When Surah Fussilat is recited
There is no widely established special time for reciting Surah Fussilat. It contains a place of prostration at the end of the passage about worshipping Allah rather than the sun and moon (41:37-38). Many biographies of the Prophet ﷺ also report that when the Meccan leader Utbah ibn Rabi'ah came to negotiate with him, the Prophet ﷺ recited the opening of this surah, and Utbah returned to his people visibly shaken.

WajaAAala feeha rawasiya min fawqiha wabaraka feeha waqaddara feeha aqwataha fee arbaAAati ayyamin sawaan lilssaileena
He placed stabilizers over it; and blessed it; and planned its provisions in four days, equally to the seekers.
- 11
Thumma istawa ila alssamai wahiya dukhanun faqala laha walilardi itiya tawAAan aw karhan qalata atayna taiAAeena
Then He turned to the sky, and it was smoke, and said to it and to the earth, “Come, willingly or unwillingly.” They said, “We come willingly.”
- 12

So He completed them as seven universes in two days, and He assigned to each universe its laws. And We decorated the lower universe with lamps, and for protection. That is the design of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.
- 13
Fain aAAradoo fuqul anthartukum saAAiqatan mithla saAAiqati AAadin wathamooda
But if they turn away, say, “I have warned you of a thunderbolt, like the thunderbolt of Aad and Thamood.”
- 14
Ith jaathumu alrrusulu min bayni aydeehim wamin khalfihim alla taAAbudoo illa Allaha qaloo law shaa rabbuna laanzala malaikatan fainna bima orsiltum bihi kafiroona
Their messengers came to them, from before them and from behind them, saying, “Do not worship anyone but Allah.” They said, “Had our Lord willed, He would have sent down angels; therefore, we reject what you are sent with.”
- 15
Faamma AAadun faistakbaroo fee alardi bighayri alhaqqi waqaloo man ashaddu minna quwwatan awalam yaraw anna Allaha allathee khalaqahum huwa ashaddu minhum quwwatan wakanoo biayatina yajhadoona
As for Aad, they turned arrogant on earth, and opposed justice, and said, “Who is more powerful than us?” Have they not considered that Allah, who created them, is more powerful than they? And they went on denying Our revelations.
- 16
Faarsalna AAalayhim reehan sarsaran fee ayyamin nahisatin linutheeqahum AAathaba alkhizyi fee alhayati alddunya walaAAathabu alakhirati akhza wahum la yunsaroona
So We unleashed upon them a screaming wind, for a few miserable days, to make them taste the punishment of shame in this life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more shameful; and they will not be saved.
- 17
Waamma thamoodu fahadaynahum faistahabboo alAAama AAala alhuda faakhathathum saAAiqatu alAAathabi alhooni bima kanoo yaksiboona
And as for Thamood, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance. So the thunderbolt of the humiliating punishment seized them, because of what they used to earn.
- 18
Wanajjayna allatheena amanoo wakanoo yattaqoona
And We saved those who believed and were righteous.
- 19
Wayawma yuhsharu aAAdao Allahi ila alnnari fahum yoozaAAoona
The Day when Allah’s enemies are herded into the Fire, forcibly.
- 20
Hatta itha ma jaooha shahida AAalayhim samAAuhum waabsaruhum wajulooduhum bima kanoo yaAAmaloona
Until, when they have reached it, their hearing, and their sight, and their skins will testify against them regarding what they used to do.
- 21
Waqaloo lijuloodihim lima shahidtum AAalayna qaloo antaqana Allahu allathee antaqa kulla shayin wahuwa khalaqakum awwala marratin wailayhi turjaAAoona
And they will say to their skins, “Why did you testify against us?” They will say, “Allah, who made all things speak, made us speak. It is He who created you the first time, and to Him you are returned.”
- 22
Wama kuntum tastatiroona an yashhada AAalaykum samAAukum wala absarukum wala juloodukum walakin thanantum anna Allaha la yaAAlamu katheeran mimma taAAmaloona
You were unable to hide yourselves from your hearing, and your sight, and your skins, to prevent them from testifying against you, and you imagined that Allah was unaware of much of what you do.
- 23
Wathalikum thannukumu allathee thanantum birabbikum ardakum faasbahtum mina alkhasireena
It is that thought of yours about your Lord that led you to ruin—so you became of the losers.
- 24
Fain yasbiroo faalnnaru mathwan lahum wain yastaAAtiboo fama hum mina almuAAtabeena
If they endure patiently, the Fire will be their residence; and if they make up excuses, they will not be pardoned.
- 25
Waqayyadna lahum quranaa fazayyanoo lahum ma bayna aydeehim wama khalfahum wahaqqa AAalayhimu alqawlu fee omamin qad khalat min qablihim mina aljinni waalinsi innahum kanoo khasireena
We had assigned companions for them, who glamorized to them what was in front of them, and what was behind them. And the Word proved true against them in communities of jinn and humans that have passed away before them. They were losers.
- 26
Waqala allatheena kafaroo la tasmaAAoo lihatha alqurani wailghaw feehi laAAallakum taghliboona
Those who disbelieve say, “Do not listen to this Quran, and talk over it, so that you may prevail.”
- 27
Falanutheeqanna allatheena kafaroo AAathaban shadeedan walanajziyannahum aswaa allathee kanoo yaAAmaloona
We will make those who disbelieve taste an intense agony, and We will recompense them according to the worst of what they used to do.
- 28
Thalika jazao aAAdai Allahi alnnaru lahum feeha daru alkhuldi jazaan bima kanoo biayatina yajhadoona
Such is the recompense of Allah’s enemies—the Fire—where they will have their permanent home, in recompense for having disregarded Our revelations.
- 29
Waqala allatheena kafaroo rabbana arina allathayni adallana mina aljinni waalinsi najAAalhuma tahta aqdamina liyakoona mina alasfaleena
Those who disbelieved will say, “Our Lord, show us those who led us astray—among jinn and humans—and we will trample them under our feet, so they become of the lowest.”
- 30
Inna allatheena qaloo rabbuna Allahu thumma istaqamoo tatanazzalu AAalayhimu almalaikatu alla takhafoo wala tahzanoo waabshiroo bialjannati allatee kuntum tooAAadoona
Surely, those who say, “Our Lord is Allah,” and then go straight, the angels will descend upon them: “Do not fear, and do not grieve, but rejoice in the news of the Garden which you were promised.
- 31

Waman ahsanu qawlan mimman daAAa ila Allahi waAAamila salihan waqala innanee mina almuslimeena
And who is better in speech than someone who calls to Allah, and acts with integrity, and says, “I am of those who submit”?
- 34
Wala tastawee alhasanatu wala alssayyiatu idfaAA biallatee hiya ahsanu faitha allathee baynaka wabaynahu AAadawatun kaannahu waliyyun hameemun
Good and evil are not equal. Repel evil with good, and the person who was your enemy becomes like an intimate friend.
- 35
Wama yulaqqaha illa allatheena sabaroo wama yulaqqaha illa thoo haththin AAatheemin
But none will attain it except those who persevere, and none will attain it except the very fortunate.

Waimma yanzaghannaka mina alshshaytani nazghun faistaAAith biAllahi innahu huwa alssameeAAu alAAaleemu
When a temptation from the Devil provokes you, seek refuge in Allah; He is the Hearer, the Knower.
- 37

And of His signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Do not bow down to the sun, nor to the moon, but bow down to Allah, who created them both, if it is Him that you serve.

Those who despise Our revelations are not hidden from Us. Is he who is hurled into the Fire better? Or he who arrives safely on the Day of Resurrection? Do as you please; He is Seeing of everything you do.

Had We made it a Quran in a foreign language, they would have said, “If only its verses were made clear.” Non-Arabic and an Arab? Say, “For those who believe, it is guidance and healing. But as for those who do not believe: there is heaviness in their ears, and it is blindness for them. These are being called from a distant place.”

We gave Moses the Book, but disputes arose concerning it. Were it not for a prior decree from your Lord, judgment would have been pronounced between them. But they are in perplexing doubt concerning it.

To Him is referred the knowledge of the Hour. No fruit emerges from its sheath, and no female conceives or delivers, except with His knowledge. And on the Day when He calls out to them, “Where are My associates?” They will say, “We admit to You, none of us is a witness.”

The human being never tires of praying for good things; but when adversity afflicts him, he despairs and loses hope.

And when We let him taste a mercy from Us, after the adversity that had afflicted him, he will say, “This is mine, and I do not think that the Hour is coming; and even if I am returned to my Lord, I will have the very best with Him.” We will inform those who disbelieve of what they did, and We will make them taste an awful punishment.

When We provide comfort for the human being, he withdraws and distances himself; but when adversity befalls him, he starts lengthy prayers.

We will show them Our proofs on the horizons, and in their very souls, until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. Is it not sufficient that your Lord is witness over everything?
