What Surah Ibrahim is about

Surah Ibrahim is the fourteenth surah of the Quran, a Meccan surah of 52 verses that closes the thirteenth juz. It is named after the prophet Abraham (Ibrahim), whose prayer for Mecca and his descendants takes up verses 35-41. The surah opens with Alif, Lam, Ra and describes the Book as sent so that people may be brought out of darkness into light (verse 1). Verse 4 notes that every messenger was sent in the language of his own people.

Verses 5-8 recall Moses (Musa) reminding the Children of Israel of their rescue from Pharaoh, and verse 7 carries the well-known promise that gratitude brings increase while ingratitude brings severe punishment. Verses 9-17 describe earlier nations such as the people of Noah, Aad and Thamud telling their messengers that they were only human, and the messengers answering that they rely on Allah. A scene from the Day of Judgment follows, in which the weak blame their leaders and Satan disowns those who followed him, saying he only called and they answered (verses 21-22). Verses 24-27 give the parable of a good word as a good tree with firm roots and branches in the sky, and a bad word as a tree torn up from the ground.

The surah then lists blessings, from rain and ships to the sun, the moon, night and day, and says Allah's favors cannot be counted (verses 32-34). Abraham's prayer follows: that Mecca be made safe, that he and his sons be kept from idols, that hearts incline toward the family he settled in a barren valley by the Sacred House, and that he, his parents and the believers be forgiven on the Day of Reckoning (verses 35-41). The closing verses describe that Day, when eyes stare and the earth is changed into another earth, and end by calling the surah a message for humanity (verses 42-52).

Main themes

  1. From darkness to light

The surah describes its own purpose in its opening verse: to bring people out of darkness into light by Allah's permission. Moses is given the same task with his people in verse 5, along with the instruction to remind them of the days of Allah.

    Verses 1–5
  2. Gratitude brings increase

Moses reminds his people of their rescue from Pharaoh, and verse 7 records Allah's declaration that thankfulness will be met with more, while ingratitude has a severe consequence. Verse 8 adds that even if everyone on earth were ungrateful, Allah would lose nothing.

    Verses 6–8
  3. Satan disowns his followers

On the Day of Judgment, Satan speaks plainly: Allah's promise was true and his was false, he had no power except to invite, and people should blame themselves. It is a sobering passage about personal responsibility.

    Verses 21–22
  4. The good tree and the bad tree

A good word is compared to a tree with deep roots and branches high in the sky that gives fruit in every season. A bad word is a tree pulled from the earth with no stability. Verse 27 says Allah keeps believers firm with the firm word in this life and the next.

    Verses 24–27
  5. Abraham's prayer for Mecca

Abraham asks for a safe city, protection from idol worship, people's hearts to be drawn to his family by the Sacred House, provision for them, the ability to keep up prayer, and forgiveness for himself, his parents and all believers.

    Verses 35–41

Verses to know

And when your Lord proclaimed: “If you give thanks, I will grant you increase; but if you are ungrateful, My punishment is severe.”
Ibrahim 14:7

One of the most quoted verses on gratitude, promising increase for those who give thanks.

24Do you not see how Allah presents a parable? A good word is like a good tree—its root is firm, and its branches are in the sky. 25It yields its fruits every season by the will of its Lord. Allah presents the parables to the people, so that they may reflect.
Ibrahim 14:24–25

The image of a good word as a firmly rooted tree with branches in the sky is one of the best-known parables of the Quran.

40“My Lord, make me one who performs the prayer, and from my offspring. Our Lord, accept my supplication.” 41“Our Lord, forgive me, and my parents, and the believers, on the Day the Reckoning takes place.”
Ibrahim 14:40–41

Abraham's closing supplications, asking to be steadfast in prayer along with his offspring and to be forgiven with his parents and the believers, are familiar to many Muslims from their daily prayers.

When Surah Ibrahim is recited

There is no well-established narration giving Surah Ibrahim a special time for recitation. Its closing prayers of Abraham in verses 40-41 are widely memorized, and many Muslims recite them as personal supplications, including near the end of the prayer before the closing salam.

  3. 3

Those who prefer the present life to the Hereafter, and repel from the path of Allah, and seek to make it crooked—these are far astray.

  4. 4

Wama arsalna min rasoolin illa bilisani qawmihi liyubayyina lahum fayudillu Allahu man yashao wayahdee man yashao wahuwa alAAazeezu alhakeemu

We never sent any messenger except in the language of his people, to make things clear for them. Allah leads astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. He is the Mighty, the Wise.

  5. 5

We sent Moses with Our signs: “Bring your people out of darkness into light, and remind them of the Days of Allah.” In that are signs for every patient and thankful person.

  6. 6

Waith qala moosa liqawmihi othkuroo niAAmata Allahi AAalaykum ith anjakum min ali firAAawna yasoomoonakum sooa alAAathabi wayuthabbihoona abnaakum wayastahyoona nisaakum wafee thalikum balaon min rabbikum AAatheemun

Moses said to his people, “Remember Allah’s blessings upon you, as He delivered you from the people of Pharaoh, who inflicted on you terrible suffering, slaughtering your sons while sparing your daughters. In that was a serious trial from your Lord.”

  7. 7

Waith taaththana rabbukum lain shakartum laazeedannakum walain kafartum inna AAathabee lashadeedun

And when your Lord proclaimed: “If you give thanks, I will grant you increase; but if you are ungrateful, My punishment is severe.”

  8. 8

Waqala moosa in takfuroo antum waman fee alardi jameeAAan fainna Allaha laghaniyyun hameedun

And Moses said, “Even if you are ungrateful, together with everyone on earth—Allah is in no need, Worthy of Praise.”

  9. 9

Has not the story reached you, of those before you, the people of Noah, and Aad, and Thamood—and those after them? None knows them except Allah. Their messengers came to them with the clear proofs, but they tried to silence them, and said, “We reject what you are sent with, and we are in serious doubt regarding what you are calling us to.”

  10. 10

Their messengers said, “Is there any doubt about Allah, Maker of the heavens and the earth? He calls you to forgive you your sins, and to defer you until a stated term.” They said, “You are only humans like us; you want to turn us away from what our ancestors worshiped; so bring us a clear proof.”

  11. 11

Their messengers said to them, “We are only humans like you, but Allah favors whomever He wills from among His servants. We cannot possibly show you any proof, except by leave of Allah. In Allah let the faithful put their trust.”

  12. 12

Wama lana alla natawakkala AAala Allahi waqad hadana subulana walanasbiranna AAala ma athaytumoona waAAala Allahi falyatawakkali almutawakkiloona

“And why should we not trust in Allah, when He has guided us in our ways? We will persevere in the face of your persecution. And upon Allah the reliant should rely.”

  13. 13

Waqala allatheena kafaroo lirusulihim lanukhrijannakum min ardina aw lataAAoodunna fee millatina faawha ilayhim rabbuhum lanuhlikanna alththalimeena

Those who disbelieved said to their messengers, “We will expel you from our land, unless you return to our religion.” And their Lord inspired them: “We will destroy the wrongdoers.”

  14. 14

Walanuskinannakumu alarda min baAAdihim thalika liman khafa maqamee wakhafa waAAeedi

“And We will settle you in the land after them. That is for him who fears My Majesty, and fears My threats.”

  15. 15

    Waistaftahoo wakhaba kullu jabbarin AAaneedin

And they prayed for victory, and every stubborn tyrant came to disappointment.

  16. 16

Min waraihi jahannamu wayusqa min main sadeedin

Beyond him lies Hell, and he will be given to drink putrid water.

  17. 17

YatajarraAAuhu wala yakadu yuseeghuhu wayateehi almawtu min kulli makanin wama huwa bimayyitin wamin waraihi AAathabun ghaleethun

He will guzzle it, but he will not swallow it. Death will come at him from every direction, but he will not die. And beyond this is relentless suffering.

  18. 18

Mathalu allatheena kafaroo birabbihim aAAmaluhum karamadin ishtaddat bihi alrreehu fee yawmin AAasifin la yaqdiroona mimma kasaboo AAala shayin thalika huwa alddalalu albaAAeedu

The likeness of those who disbelieve in their Lord: their works are like ashes, in a fierce wind, on a stormy day. They have no control over anything they have earned. That is the utmost misguidance.

  19. 19

Alam tara anna Allaha khalaqa alssamawati waalarda bialhaqqi in yasha yuthhibkum wayati bikhalqin jadeedin

Do you not see that Allah created the heavens and the earth with truth? If He wills, He can do away with you, and bring a new creation.

  20. 20

    Wama thalika AAala Allahi biAAazeezin

And that is not difficult for Allah.

  21. 21

They will emerge before Allah, all together. The weak will say to those who were proud, “We were your followers, can you protect us at all against Allah’s punishment?” They will say, “Had Allah guided us, we would have guided you. It is the same for us; whether we mourn, or are patient; there is no asylum for us.”

  22. 22

Waqala alshshaytanu lamma qudiya alamru inna Allaha waAAadakum waAAda alhaqqi wawaAAadtukum faakhlaftukum wama kana liya AAalaykum min sultanin illa an daAAawtukum faistajabtum lee fala taloomoonee waloomoo anfusakum ma ana bimusrikhikum wama antum bimusrikhiyya innee kafartu bima ashraktumooni min qablu inna alththalimeena lahum AAathabun aleemun

And Satan will say, when the issue is settled, “Allah has promised you the promise of truth, and I promised you, but I failed you. I had no authority over you, except that I called you, and you answered me. So do not blame me, but blame yourselves. I cannot come to your aid, nor can you come to my aid. I reject your associating with me in the past. The wrongdoers will have a torment most painful.”

  23. 23

Waodkhila allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati jannatin tajree min tahtiha alanharu khalideena feeha biithni rabbihim tahiyyatuhum feeha salamun

But those who believed and did good deeds will be admitted into gardens beneath which rivers flow, to remain therein forever, by leave of their Lord. Their greeting therein will be: “Peace.”

  24. 24

Alam tara kayfa daraba Allahu mathalan kalimatan tayyibatan kashajaratin tayyibatin asluha thabitun wafarAAuha fee alssamai

Do you not see how Allah presents a parable? A good word is like a good tree—its root is firm, and its branches are in the sky.

  25. 25

Tutee okulaha kulla heenin biithni rabbiha wayadribu Allahu alamthala lilnnasi laAAallahum yatathakkaroona

It yields its fruits every season by the will of its Lord. Allah presents the parables to the people, so that they may reflect.

  26. 26

Wamathalu kalimatin khabeethatin kashajaratin khabeethatin ijtuththat min fawqi alardi ma laha min qararin

And the parable of a bad word is that of a bad tree—it is uprooted from the ground; it has no stability.

  27. 27

Yuthabbitu Allahu allatheena amanoo bialqawli alththabiti fee alhayati alddunya wafee alakhirati wayudillu Allahu alththalimeena wayafAAalu Allahu ma yashao

Allah gives firmness to those who believe, with the firm word, in this life, and in the Hereafter. And Allah leads the wicked astray. Allah does whatever He wills.

  28. 28

Alam tara ila allatheena baddaloo niAAmata Allahi kufran waahalloo qawmahum dara albawari

Have you not seen those who exchanged the blessing of Allah with blasphemy, and landed their people into the house of perdition?

  29. 29

    Jahannama yaslawnaha wabisa alqararu

Hell—they will roast in it. What a miserable settlement.

  30. 30

WajaAAaloo lillahi andadan liyudilloo AAan sabeelihi qul tamattaAAoo fainna maseerakum ila alnnari

And they set up rivals to Allah, in order to lead away from His path. Say, “Enjoy yourselves; your destination is the Fire.”

  31. 31

Qul liAAibadiya allatheena amanoo yuqeemoo alssalata wayunfiqoo mimma razaqnahum sirran waAAalaniyatan min qabli an yatiya yawmun la bayAAun feehi wala khilalun

Tell My servants who have believed to perform the prayers, and to give from what We have given them, secretly and publicly, before a Day comes in which there is neither trading nor friendship.

  32. 32

Allahu allathee khalaqa alssamawati waalarda waanzala mina alssamai maan faakhraja bihi mina alththamarati rizqan lakum wasakhkhara lakumu alfulka litajriya fee albahri biamrihi wasakhkhara lakumu alanhara

Allah is He who created the heavens and the earth, and sends down water from the sky, and with it produces fruits for your sustenance. And He committed the ships to your service, sailing through the sea by His command, and He committed the rivers to your service.

  33. 33

Wasakhkhara lakumu alshshamsa waalqamara daibayni wasakhkhara lakumu allayla waalnnahara

And He committed the sun and the moon to your service, both continuously pursuing their courses, and He committed the night and the day to your service.

  34. 34

Waatakum min kulli ma saaltumoohu wain taAAuddoo niAAmata Allahi la tuhsooha inna alinsana lathaloomun kaffarun

And He has given you something of all what you asked. And if you were to count Allah’s blessings, you would not be able to enumerate them. The human being is unfair and ungrateful.

  35. 35

Waith qala ibraheemu rabbi ijAAal hatha albalada aminan waojnubnee wabaniyya an naAAbuda alasnama

Recall that Abraham said, “O my Lord, make this land peaceful, and keep me and my sons from worshiping idols.”

  36. 36

Rabbi innahunna adlalna katheeran mina alnnasi faman tabiAAanee fainnahu minnee waman AAasanee fainnaka ghafoorun raheemun

“My Lord, they have led many people astray. Whoever follows me belongs with me; and whoever disobeys me—You are Forgiving and Merciful.”

  37. 37

Rabbana innee askantu min thurriyyatee biwadin ghayri thee zarAAin AAinda baytika almuharrami rabbana liyuqeemoo alssalata faijAAal afidatan mina alnnasi tahwee ilayhim waorzuqhum mina alththamarati laAAallahum yashkuroona

“Our Lord, I have settled some of my offspring in a valley of no vegetation, by Your Sacred House, our Lord, so that they may perform the prayers. So make the hearts of some people incline towards them, and provide them with fruits, that they may be thankful.”

  38. 38

Rabbana innaka taAAlamu ma nukhfee wama nuAAlinu wama yakhfa AAala Allahi min shayin fee alardi wala fee alssamai

“Our Lord, You know what we conceal and what we reveal. And nothing is hidden from Allah, on earth or in the heaven.”

  39. 39

Alhamdu lillahi allathee wahaba lee AAala alkibari ismaAAeela waishaqa inna rabbee lasameeAAu aldduAAai

“Praise be to Allah, who has given me, in my old age, Ishmael and Isaac. My Lord is the Hearer of Prayers.”

  40. 40

Rabbi ijAAalnee muqeema alssalati wamin thurriyyatee rabbana wtaqabbal duAAai

“My Lord, make me one who performs the prayer, and from my offspring. Our Lord, accept my supplication.”

  41. 41

Rabbana ighfir lee waliwalidayya walilmumineena yawma yaqoomu alhisabu

“Our Lord, forgive me, and my parents, and the believers, on the Day the Reckoning takes place.”

  42. 42

Wala tahsabanna Allaha ghafilan AAamma yaAAmalu alththalimoona innama yuakhkhiruhum liyawmin tashkhasu feehi alabsaru

Do not ever think that Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only defers them until a Day when the sights stare.

  43. 43

MuhtiAAeena muqniAAee ruoosihim la yartaddu ilayhim tarfuhum waafidatuhum hawaon

Their necks outstretched, their heads upraised, their gaze unblinking, their hearts void.

  44. 44

Waanthiri alnnasa yawma yateehimu alAAathabu fayaqoolu allatheena thalamoo rabbana akhkhirna ila ajalin qareebin nujib daAAwataka wanattabiAAi alrrusula awalam takoonoo aqsamtum min qablu ma lakum min zawalin

And warn mankind of the Day when the punishment will come upon them, and the wicked will say, “Our Lord, defer us for a little while, and we will answer Your call and follow the messengers.” Did you not swear before that there will be no passing away for you?

  45. 45

Wasakantum fee masakini allatheena thalamoo anfusahum watabayyana lakum kayfa faAAalna bihim wadarabna lakumu alamthala

And you inhabited the homes of those who wronged themselves, and it became clear to you how We dealt with them, and We cited for you the examples.

  46. 46

Waqad makaroo makrahum waAAinda Allahi makruhum wain kana makruhum litazoola minhu aljibalu

They planned their plans, but their plans are known to Allah, even if their plans can eliminate mountains.

  47. 47

Fala tahsabanna Allaha mukhlifa waAAdihi rusulahu inna Allaha AAazeezun thoo intiqamin

Do not ever think that Allah will break His promise to His messengers. Allah is Strong, Able to Avenge.

  48. 48

Yawma tubaddalu alardu ghayra alardi waalssamawatu wabarazoo lillahi alwahidi alqahhari

On the Day when the earth is changed into another earth, and the heavens, and they will emerge before Allah, the One, the Irresistible.

  49. 49

Watara almujrimeena yawmaithin muqarraneena fee alasfadi

On that Day, you will see the sinners bound together in chains.

  50. 50

Sarabeeluhum min qatranin wataghsha wujoohahumu alnnaru

Their garments made of tar, and the Fire covering their faces.

  51. 51

Liyajziya Allahu kulla nafsin ma kasabat inna Allaha sareeAAu alhisabi

That Allah may repay each soul according to what it has earned. Allah is Quick in reckoning.

  52. 52

Hatha balaghun lilnnasi waliyuntharoo bihi waliyaAAlamoo annama huwa ilahun wahidun waliyaththakkara oloo alalbabi

This is a proclamation for mankind, that they may be warned thereby, and know that He is One God, and that people of understanding may remember.
