Quran verses about parents

Kindness to parents, birr al-walidayn, is placed in the Quran right next to worshiping Allah alone. Several times the command to worship Allah is followed directly by the command to be good to one's parents. Surah Al-Isra goes into detail: not even a sound of irritation when they grow old, gentle speech, humility, and prayer for them.

The Quran pays special attention to mothers, describing pregnancy and nursing as hardship upon hardship. It also sets one limit: if parents push a child to associate partners with Allah, the child should not obey in that, but should still keep them company kindly in this world. Prophets show this in practice. John (Yahya) and Jesus (Isa) are praised for being kind to their parents, and Abraham (Ibrahim) and Noah (Nuh) pray for theirs. The verses below gather the commands, the reasons and the prayers.

23Your Lord has commanded that you worship none but Him, and that you be good to your parents. If either of them or both of them reach old age with you, do not say to them a word of disrespect, nor scold them, but say to them kind words. 24And lower to them the wing of humility, out of mercy, and say, “My Lord, have mercy on them, as they raised me when I was a child.”
    Al-Isra 17:23–24

Right after the command to worship Allah alone comes the command to be good to parents: no word of disrespect in their old age, only gentle words, humility and the prayer that Allah have mercy on them as they raised you.

Your Lord knows best what is in your minds. If you are righteous—He is Forgiving to the obedient.
    Al-Isra 17:25

These verses close by saying Allah knows what is in people's hearts and is forgiving to those who keep turning back to Him.

We have entrusted the human being with the care of his parents. His mother carried him through hardship upon hardship, weaning him in two years. So give thanks to Me, and to your parents. To Me is the destination.
    Luqman 31:14

Allah reminds people of their mother's hardship upon hardship in carrying and nursing them, and asks them to give thanks to Him and to their parents.

But if they strive to have you associate with Me something of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. But keep them company in this life, in kindness, and follow the path of him who turns to Me. Then to Me is your return; and I will inform you of what you used to do.
    Luqman 31:15

If parents push a child to associate others with Allah, the child should not obey in that, but should still keep them company with kindness.

We have enjoined upon man kindness to his parents. His mother carried him with difficulty, and delivered him with difficulty. His bearing and weaning takes thirty months. Until, when he has attained his maturity, and has reached forty years, he says, “Lord, enable me to appreciate the blessings You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to act with righteousness, pleasing You. And improve my children for me. I have sincerely repented to You, and I am of those who have surrendered.”
    Al-Ahqaf 46:15

Kindness to parents is enjoined again, with the mother's difficult pregnancy and birth described, followed by a prayer of gratitude for blessings on oneself and one's parents.

Worship Allah, and ascribe no partners to Him, and be good to the parents, and the relatives, and the orphans, and the poor, and the neighbor next door, and the distant neighbor, and the close associate, and the traveler, and your servants. Allah does not love the arrogant showoff.
    An-Nisa 4:36

Being good to parents is listed right after worshiping Allah, ahead of relatives, orphans, neighbors and others.

Say, “Come, let me tell you what your Lord has forbidden you: that you associate nothing with Him; that you honor your parents; that you do not kill your children because of poverty—We provide for you and for them; that you do not come near indecencies, whether outward or inward; and that you do not kill the soul which Allah has sanctified—except in the course of justice. All this He has enjoined upon you, so that you may understand.”
    Al-An'am 6:151

In a list of what Allah has commanded, honoring one's parents comes second, right after not associating anything with Him.

We have advised the human being to be good to his parents. But if they urge you to associate with Me something you have no knowledge of, do not obey them. To Me is your return; and I will inform you of what you used to do.
    Al-'Ankabut 29:8

Again people are told to be good to their parents, with the same limit that no one should be obeyed in associating partners with Allah.

And kind to his parents; and he was not a disobedient tyrant.
    Maryam 19:14

John (Yahya) is described as kind and dutiful to his parents, never arrogant or disobedient.

And kind to my mother, and He did not make me a disobedient rebel.
    Maryam 19:32

Jesus (Isa), speaking as a baby, says Allah made him kind to his mother.

“Our Lord, forgive me, and my parents, and the believers, on the Day the Reckoning takes place.”
    Ibrahim 14:41

Abraham prays for forgiveness for himself, his parents and the believers on the Day of Reckoning.

My Lord! Forgive me and my parents, and anyone who enters my home in faith, and all the believing men and believing women; and do not increase the wrongdoers except in perdition.”
    Nuh 71:28

Noah ends his long plea with a prayer for forgiveness for himself, his parents and all believers.

The Quran asks for kindness that is visible in small things: tone of voice, patience with repeated questions, time spent together, and prayer. If your parents are living, one of these verses can become a daily habit. If they have passed away, the prayers of Abraham and Noah, and the words of 17:24, are still yours to say for them.
