Quran verses about trust in allah
Trust in Allah, tawakkul, means relying on Him fully while still doing what is in your power. The Quran presents it this way in 3:159, where the Prophet ﷺ is told to consult his companions, make a decision, and then put his trust in Allah. Jacob (Yaqub) does the same in 12:67: he gives his sons careful practical advice, then says that the decision belongs to Allah alone and that he relies on Him.
The Quran describes Allah as enough, hasbi, for whoever relies on Him, and as al-Wakil, the one in whom trust is placed. It praises believers who, when told that great forces had gathered against them, only grew in faith and said that Allah was enough for them. It also gives the reason trust makes sense: Allah is the Living who does not die, who sees you when you stand, and who holds every creature in His care. The verses below gather these assurances.
And will provide for him from where he never expected. Whoever relies on Allah—He will suffice him. Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has set a measure to all things.
At-Talaq 65:3 Whoever relies on Allah will find Him enough, and Allah will surely bring about what He intends.
It is by grace from Allah that you were gentle with them. Had you been harsh, hardhearted, they would have dispersed from around you. So pardon them, and ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in the conduct of affairs. And when you make a decision, put your trust in Allah; Allah loves the trusting.
Ali 'Imran 3:159 The Prophet ﷺ is told to consult his companions and, once he has decided, to trust Allah, because Allah loves those who trust Him.
If Allah supports you, there is none who can overcome you. But if He fails you, who is there to help you after Him? So in Allah let the believers put their trust.
Ali 'Imran 3:160 If Allah helps you no one can overcome you, so believers should place their trust in Him.

And if you asked them, “Who created the heavens and the earth?” they would say, “Allah.” Say, “Have you seen those you pray to instead of Allah? If Allah willed any harm for me, can they lift His harm? And if He willed a blessing for me, can they hold back His mercy?” Say, “Allah suffices for me. On Him the reliant rely.”
Az-Zumar 39:38 The Prophet ﷺ is told to say that Allah is enough for him and that those who rely should rely on Him.
Tawakkul in these verses is not passive. Jacob still gave advice, and the Prophet ﷺ still consulted and planned. What trust adds is release from carrying the outcome alone. Once you have done what you can, a phrase like hasbunallah, Allah is enough for us, can be a way of handing the rest over.
Questions
What is tawakkul?
Tawakkul is trust and reliance on Allah. In the Quran it follows effort and planning, as in 3:159, where the Prophet ﷺ is told to consult, decide and then trust Allah.
Which verse says Allah is enough for those who trust Him?
Surah At-Talaq 65:3 says that whoever relies on Allah will find Him enough. A similar phrase appears in 3:173 and 39:38.
Does trusting Allah mean not making an effort?
No. In 12:67 Jacob gives his sons practical advice before saying he relies on Allah, and in 3:159 trust comes after consultation and a decision.
