Quran verses about anger

The Quran does not pretend that good people never get angry. Moses (Musa) returns to find his people worshiping a calf and throws down the tablets in anger. Jonah (Yunus) leaves his people in anger and ends up in the belly of a fish. What the Quran praises is what a person does with anger: holding it in, kazm al-ghayz, and forgiving.

Among the qualities of the righteous in 3:134 are those who swallow their anger and pardon people, and in 42:37 believers are described as forgiving when they are angry. The Quran also gives practical steps. When a provocation from Satan comes, seek refuge in Allah. Answer a bad deed with a better one, and an enemy may become a close friend. When the ignorant speak harshly, answer with peace. The verses below collect both the stories and the guidance.

133And race towards forgiveness from your Lord, and a Garden as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the righteous. 134Those who give in prosperity and adversity, and those who restrain anger, and those who forgive people. Allah loves the doers of good.

He said, “Son of my mother, the people have overpowered me, and were about to kill me; so do not allow the enemies to gloat over me, and do not count me among the unjust people.” 151He said, “My Lord, forgive me and my brother, and admit us into Your mercy; for You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.”

These verses offer a short plan for an angry moment: pause, seek refuge in Allah, say less, and if you can, answer with something better than what was said to you. Moses' story is a reminder that even after anger gets the better of you, you can pick up what you dropped, ask forgiveness, and continue.
